Work Text:
Iwaizumi stumbled into the kitchen, still half asleep. He walked over to Oikawa who was making them coffee, and hugged him from behind, burying his head in his boyfriend’s neck.
“Good morning. Didn’t expect you to be up this early on a Sunday.”
“You left the bed cold.”
“Sorry about that, I thought it’d be nice to make us some breakfast.”
“‘S fine. I’ll go set the table.” Iwaizumi kissed Oikawa’s cheek quickly and set the table. They sat down and started eating, after thanking for the food.
“Do you have any plans tonight?” Iwaizumi asked.
“Uhh no, figured we’d have a night in. Why?”
“Oh, I was thinking we could do something nice.”
“Can we stay home though? I don’t feel like going out and dealing with the public.”
They were twenty eight, and Oikawa was a world renowned athlete (not that Iwaizumi wasn’t a bit famous himself, but Oikawa represented the country and it meant most people knew his name by now). No matter where they’d go, someone with a camera was following them. Luckily, since they didn’t live in a big city no one had discovered where they lived, but sometimes it was hard to always be watched.
“Sure, that was the plan anyways. Just thought I’d make something nice for dinner and we’d have a picnic on the roof.”
“That sounds fun, sure. Also, it’s your turn to walk Godzilla and I think he’s getting impatient.”
“Yeah, I’ll take care of that once we’re finished eating.”
“Sounds good.”
They finished eating and Iwaizumi went on his daily walk with Godzilla (though the walk often turned into a jog), and when he came back Oikawa was gone. He left a small note saying he’d gone grocery shopping. Iwaizumi settled in their bedroom, then Mattsun called him.
“Hey!”
“Hey.”
“So how’s the plan going?”
“Pretty well.”
“I honestly thought you’d do something fancy at a restaurant. Not… What’s the plan again?”
Iwaizumi rolled his eyes. “I make dinner, which he likes that I do, and we eat and go stargazing on the roof which is another thing he likes. Then at some point I’ll ask. I decided to do this because neither of us likes going out that much, and because public proposals can be embarrassing and stressful. Also, there will be paparazzi and if there’s one thing neither of us wants is the whole world watching us getting engaged.”
“I don’t see the point about the public proposal. It’s not like he’ll be surprised, you guys talked about marriage before, you both knew it would come at some point and you both seem to be ready.”
“He said he’s ready, and it’s up to me. I’m also a bit suspicious he’s been planning his own proposal, but I guess it’s a step I wanted to take to show him I am ready. I don’t want to do a public proposal because it is stressful, having such a moment and having everyone watching you.”
“That makes sense, I guess. Do what you will. Whatever it is, Oikawa’s gonna love it. You know him better than anyone else does.”
“That much is true. I think it’ll go well, I wrote the thing ahead.”
“You’re not gonna improvise it?”
“That won’t go well. At all. Have you met me?”
“Okay fair. But I think if you say something you wrote ahead it’ll feel less authentic. You should say something from the heart.”
“Maybe, but I don’t want to risk screwing up and saying the wrong thing.”
“You make a pretty good point I guess.”
“I know I do.”
Iwaizumi suddenly heard the door open and close.
“I’m home!”
“Welcome back, I’m on the phone with Mattsun, wanna come say hi?”
“Obviously, hold on.”
Oikawa walked into the room, getting into the frame. “Hey!”
“Hey, what’s up?”
“I’m good. You?”
“Just fine. Heard you guys are going on a date tonight.”
“Yeah, it’ll be fun. Shouldn’t you be sleeping though?”
“Probably, yeah. Talk to you guys soon! Oh, and Takahiro says hi.”
“Tell him we said hi back. Goodnight.”
“Night.” Mattsun hung up the phone.
“What were you guys talking about?”
“Nothing much, just told him about our plans tonight.”
“Oh that’s nice. I have some stuff to do today though.”
“I know, when will you be done?”
“Around five or so.”
“Then it gives us plenty of time.”

The dinner was ready and Iwaizumi set everything. He prepared everything in advanced, he knew it should all be fine, yet Iwaizumi was a nervous wreck as he was waiting for Oikawa to get out of the shower.
I’m gonna ask him to marry me. This is actually happening, was the same thought that replayed in Iwaizumi’s head as he waited patiently. He knew no matter what, things could be different in his and Oikawa’s relationship by the end of the night.
“Alright, let’s go,” Oikawa said, getting out of the shower.
“I already set everything up.”
“Really? You’re the best.” Oikawa smiled.
“It’s nothing, let’s go.” Iwaizumi and Oikawa quickly went up to the roof.
“Holy shit. You didn’t have to.”
“I just wanted to surprise you a bit, that’s allowed, right?”
“Of course, but… Wow.”
Iwaizumi set something nice up for them. He laid out a picnic blanket and a few pillows they could sit on comfortably, and put out a small folding table they could eat on.
“This is amazing.”
“Just felt like doing something nice for you. I take it that you like it?”
“I do, thank you. Let’s eat?”
“Well I didn’t cook for nothing.”
They sat at the table and said a small prayer for the food before they started eating.
“This is great!”
“Thanks, I’m happy you like it.”
“So how was your day?”
They ate and chatted together, letting time fly by and enjoying each other’s company as more and more stars appeared in the sky and the light of the moon shined stronger while the sun set further beyond the horizon, until they were left in the blue-white light of the almost full moon.
“Thank you so much for doing this,” Oikawa said once they were done eating and sitting on the blanket. “It was very needed.”
“Of course. Just something to show I care.”
Ideally, this would be the best moment and he knew it. Iwaizumi wasn’t sure if he had the courage, but it was time to find out. He took one last deep breath. It’s now or never.
“There’s another thing, actually.”
“What is it?”
He had the whole proposal ready and memorised, he had been pouring over it for a month now, figuring out exactly what he’d want to say at the moment. But now the moment finally came and it all slipped away suddenly as he looked at Oikawa. He was rendered completely speechless.
‘You should say something from the heart,’ Mattsun had said earlier. Iwaizumi didn’t know why he was suddenly remembering it out of the blue, but suddenly the advice seemed great.
“I have something to say.”
“Go ahead then.” Oikawa chuckled.
“I love you. So, so much. You… You mean the world to me, really. You’ve always been here for me, even when things got rough. And I was never good at expressing how thankful I am for everything you’ve done for me. So I just tried to return the favours the best I could. And somewhere along the way when we were growing up, I fell in love with you. At first, I hated the thought, but eventually I let myself. Even when loving you hurt. I let you break my heart billions of times, and I’d do it all again if it means I’ll still be sitting here with you.” Iwaizumi couldn’t remember the last time what he wanted to say flowed out so perfectly. “I always have, and always will love you. When you were dating other people… I think even when I was dating other people. It never stopped. So… I’m doing this to show you just how much.” His voice was shaking, and so were his hands as he reached for the ring and got on his knee.
Oikawa clapped his hands over his mouth, holding back the tears and sobs.
“I want to marry you, Tooru. I think deep down I always have. I know we haven’t actually been together for that long, and definitely haven’t been living together long, but I also know this would be the right choice if we both want it. I want the whole nine yards. To grow old together and retire to this house… Maybe have a bigger family if we want… I want all that, and I know you do too. So, will you marry me?”
“Yes! Yes, of course. Holy shit, I just don’t know what to say.” Oikawa threw himself at Iwaizumi, hugging him tightly. “I love you, I love you, I love you,” he managed to say between the tears.
“Me too.” Iwaizumi hugged him back just as tightly, crying as well.
“So we’re getting married?”
“That’s the point.”
“Wow…”
“Agreed. Wow.”
They both laughed, looking at each other through teary eyes.
“I love you,” Oikawa said.
“I love you too.”
