Passing Afternoon

Summary:

Just a lazy afternoon at home with Hol Horse, picking out what to eat for dinner and playing with his hair.

Notes:

This was inspired by a list of prompts based on physical contact, but I couldn’t find the post again. The prompt was “wait…are you braiding my hair?”

Gender neutral reader, no pronouns or gendered terms are used in this one.

Work Text:

It’s mid-afternoon, and you’re lounging on the couch. There’s some kind of home renovation show playing on your tv, but you’re not really paying attention to it. Instead you’re scrolling through the restaurants on a delivery app. Hol’s in the shower, and you’re trying to narrow down your choices for dinner before he gets out. It’s been a lazy day, and neither of you wants to cook or go out, so delivery it is.

You’ve picked out two places to choose between together when the sound of the shower running stops. You watch the people on tv start installing new cabinets in their kitchen (and judge their choice of backsplash) until Hol comes to join you in a soft tshirt and loose shorts. His hair is still damp, and he sits down on the floor in front of you to avoid getting water on the couch while he brushes it.

“Let me.” You sit up and take the brush from him, and he scoots back so you can reach his hair better.

“Thanks, darlin’. What are we watching?”

“I haven’t been paying attention, but I think it’s some kind of home reno competition.” You start running the brush through his hair, taking care to be gentle with any tangles. You like playing with his hair, so when you finish brushing it you start separating it into three sections for a braid.

It’s nothing fancy, just a low braided ponytail. Hol is distracted by the tv, and he doesn’t seem to notice what you’re doing until you’re already halfway done.

“Wait,” He says during a commercial break. “Are you braiding my hair?”

“Yeah, hold still.” You finish the braid, but you don’t have anything to keep it in place with. You pull the hair forward over Hol’s shoulder and hand the end to him. “Hold this, I’ll be right back.”

You grab a ponytail holder from a bathroom drawer and come back to put it in his hair.

“There, it’s done!” You sit back, and Hol runs a hand along the braid.

“Very nice.” He moves up to sit next to you on the couch, and you lean into his side.

“What’d you pick for dinner?” He asks, and you lay out the two choices. He browses their menus on your phone, and you wonder idly if his hair will get wavy when he takes it out of the braid, since you put it up wet. You’d like to see that.
