Chapter 1: The Black Wind Returns

Summary:

Janus hears the Black Wind for the first time in years...

Chapter Text

Janus first remembered hearing the Black Wind right before his father died. He didn’t know why he could hear a wind and why it unnerved him so much. He had tried to tell his parents but they told him they didn’t have time for such tales. In the end, he was ignored by everyone except his sister Schala. She said she could sometimes sense it too but it didn’t seem to bother her like it did him. It was their secret.

He soon realized the Black Wind only howled when someone was close to death. Each time he heard it, Schala comforted him. It had been quiet for a few years but now, he could hear it shrieking in his ears as he stared at three strange people. They looked to be around his age; a boy with fiery red hair, a girl with long blonde hair tied back in a ponytail and another girl with short purple hair, wearing glasses. They stood at the bottom of the stairs in Kajar’s library looking up at him.

He froze and closed his eyes for a moment, hoping his senses were wrong. To his dread, the Black Wind still screamed in his ears… and the newcomers were still staring back at him.

“Is something wrong?” asked the blond girl. Her two friends continued to look at him, waiting for an answer. Their stares felt like daggers and his stomach churned as the Black Wind kept howling. Janus found himself wringing his hands so much it hurt.

“The Black wind…” Janus mumbled out loud. “One of you will die soon…”

The newcomers looked at him with horrified expressions. The girl wearing glasses yelled, “What?! Hey! Explain yourself!!”

Wanting to get away from these strangers and the howl of the Black Wind, Janus pushed past them and ran out of the library. He ran as fast as he could to the skyway. Schala needed to know about these strange people and the wind’s return…
