Work Text:
It's hard when that one person who means the whole world to you, is literally on the other side of the world.
Kiyoomi and Atsumu had been dating for a few months now and they were content, happy, and very much in love.
They met online and strangely enjoyed each other's company despite them being polar opposites.
Kiyoomi is the ultimate incarnation of introverted-ness. He doesn't like crowded places, awkward small talks, unexpected phone calls, forced socializing, and the like.
He is a coffee and dog person, treats his alone time as leisure, and finds solace in whatever other people would consider boring.
Atsumu, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. The life of the party. The social butterfly. The guy everyone is friends with. The person everyone would want to hang out with.
He likes parties, is confident in things he likes to do. Says whatever he wanted to say and stands by it. He is a tea and cat person too.
Atsumu is like the sun whereas Kiyoomi is the moon.
It's strange how they found each other among the billion people in the world, and fell for each other. Weirdly enough though, it all felt so right at the same time.
They found comfort in each other's voices whenever they find the time to call. A few minutes or hours felt the same to them as long as they get to spend time together.
Kiyoomi starts his day at the same time Atsumu retires for the night. It was a lot of adjusting and missing each other at times they couldn't talk more.
Kiyoomi would have his breakfast as Atsumu gets his dinner.
Kiyoomi will complain about how hot the weather is from where he is while Atsumu tells him how he spent his day curled up in bed because it was freezing outside and he feels lazy.
Kiyoomi will send Atsumu photos of his puppy laying on his lap as he sleeps while Atsumu will send a photo of his cat meowing, calling for a mate.
Some days Atsumu will send photos of the places he knew Kiyoomi would love to see. He loves nature. But Kiyoomi doesn't have the energy /or motivation/ to go out and get some sun to save his life.
Kiyoomi will send Atsumu photos of his over-creamed coffee in the mornings, sweets he thought Atsumu would like too, and even ask him to try if it ever was available where he is in.
And Atsumu would. He would look for it and tell Kiyoomi what he thought about it. And Kiyoomi will have the biggest smile on his face whenever Atsumu would like them too.
Times they're both free, they'd set a movie date where one would stay up to make it happen. It was a give and take thing of course. They'd buy snacks and criticize the movie as they watch.
Kiyoomi can not last a day without any message from Atsumu though he would rather die than say it.
Atsumu would tease him about being clingy and Kiyoomi would of course deny it.
They said absence makes the heart grow fonder - but maybe, the distance too.
Especially when everything they ever have was just behind their screens. The yearning to touch sometimes gets overwhelming.
There's no such thing as a perfect relationship of course.
They would fight too. Bicker and sulk. Get jealous and fight at the smallest of things.
But they will always come back home to each other. Every time.
The longest they didn't talk to each other was a week.
And that has been hell for /Kiyoomi/ the both of them and even though it's the farthest they'd go. Like a dead end.
But with the pride set aside, one made a move to which the other had been eagerly waiting, and they made up.
They cried and blamed each other for waiting too long to come and talk until one chuckled.
"I love you's" mid-crying always makes them both laugh. It's during while they bicker about who was more prideful and whose fault it was.
It was adorable and funny and just--- so them.
They had so many plans for when they'll finally meet each other.
Go to Disneyland.
Go to untimely food tripping.
A long night drive.
Make an UWU snowman together as they throw snowballs at each other.
Hot drinks in front of the fireplace. Eat s'mores while in front of a bonfire and a lot more.
Plans for the future, for the future them. For a future where they can finally do things together, wake up at the same sun, sleep under the same stars.
Plans they can't wait to happen.
"Darling, it's almost the new year for me," Kiyoomi spoke while they were on a call. It was a few minutes till 2022 for him though he was a half-day ahead of Atsumu who stayed up to try and talk more.
"Nice." Atsumu pauses, "Ya happy?" He asked, voice tired and sleepy.
Kiyoomi nodded as if Atsumu could see him. There was a fond smile on his face as he watched his family being all excited as the last minute countdown began.
"Mhm."
Atsumu smiled, Kiyoomi just knew by heart.
"I'm glad to know that, darlin."
"You sound tired, I told y-"
"No. 'm not tired. 'm perfectly fine stayin up till the next day."
It's Kiyoomi's turn to smile. He could hear the stifled yawn from behind Atsumu's hand who probably tried to cover it up so he wouldn't hear.
"Dumbass. I told you I can just call you when it's midnight for me."
"I insist to wait with ya till it comes."
How can he argue hearing that?
Heart clenching from longing, Kiyoomi sighed.
"Fine-"
"Darlin. Promise me we'll spend the new years together soon."
There was a few seconds of silence before Kiyoomi spoke.
"I promise."
Pause.
Quiet smiles. Joyful hearts. Wishful sighs.+
5...4...3...
"Happy new year darling."
2...1...
"Happy new year. I love you."
"I love you too."
Kiyoomi started the new year with a full heart while Atsumu was glad for staying up for the person who completes his days.
Kiyoomi and Atsumu are a thousand miles apart, yes.
But their hearts will always be beside each other.
News years, new beginnings, new hope, new life.
However far they are from each other right now, their hearts remain in touch.
