Chapter Text

September 1st was Lily Evans' favourite day, well except her birthday of course. And today was September 1st and she was about to start her 7th year at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

"I can't believe you grew up so fast," Marie, Lily's mother said. "I am going to have to miss you all over again now," she said as she caressed her daughter's cheek, tears in her eyes.

"My little girl is all grown up," her father, Lewis added. Lily giggled. "I'll miss you guys too," she said, "Though I'd feel better if you guys would let me cast protective charms at the house,"

"Lily, Hunny that is not necessary believe me we'll be okay," Marie said.

"We'll be fine pumpkin," Lewis agreed, not looking away from the road and continuing driving the car steadily. "I'm sorry 'Tuney' couldn't be here,"

"It's fine," Lily muttered, "I prefer it that way,"

"Lily!" Marie said, "That is not okay, she is your sister!"

"Right!" Lily argued, "Because I am the one who calls her 'Freak' 24/7!"

A silence ensued for the rest of the car ride to Kings Cross, making Lily very uncomfortable as she played with her Head Girl badge that was shining on her sweater.

Sirius Black and James Potter had fallen asleep on The Potter's living room couch last night after a very 'intense' marathon of Exploding Snap with a 'bit' of Fire Whiskey involved. "Boys!" Euphemia Potter yelled, "BOYS!"

Sirius and James jumped at their mothers' yells. "Aah!" they yelled. "Oh," James said, "Morning mum!"

"Get up, get dressed! We're going to Kings Cross!"

And so they did, they got their trunks and apparated to Kings Cross along with Euphemia.

"I'm so proud of you James," Euphemia said, "You, head boy? I wish your father could have been here!"

"Mum, he runs Sleekeazy's and is Head Auror, I expected this. Anyway, it means he'll cut me some slack when the classic letters from Minnie come flying in!"

"James!" Euphemia yelled, "You are head boy now, leave your fathers genes behind please!"

Sirius laughed, "Mum, we both know that'll never happen," he said, Euphemia rolled her eyes. "Just go boys, I see Remus and Peter. Oh, and that must be Lily," she said pointing at a ginger witch with green eyes. James's eyes turned right at Lily.

"Not so fast Prongs," Sirius said, "You still have to go and return Marly her quill,"

James sighed and headed towards an angry Marlene arguing with her mother. And Sirius waved goodbye to Euphemia and headed towards Remus, who was chatting with Lily.

"Congrats on being the Head Girl Lily," Remus said, Lily smiled. "Thank Rem, do you know who got Head Boy,"

"Yea we do!" Sirius said, approaching them, "But it is going to be a fun surprise for you,"

"Is it Sev?" Lily asked with anxiety, "Please don't tell me it's Sev!"

"Chill Evans," Sirius said, "You think I'd call that a fun surprise?"

"I don't know what you call what," Lily said, "Anyway I should go, I'll meet him in the Heads Compartment!"

When Lily got to the Heads Compartment she was shocked to see James Potter sitting there, reading the Daily Prophet. "What are you doing here?" she asked,

"I'm Head Boy!" James said,

"Oh, god."

"I'm Head Boy!" James said,

"Oh, god." Lily said, "Seriously is this what Black and Remus call a 'Fun Suprise'! I am going to kill your friends!"

"Please don't." James laughed, "Hey Evans.. um, can we talk. Y'know before the prefects get here?"

"What is it Potter, if you are going to start asking me out again, I swear to god-"

"Hey!" James said, "You very well know I stopped doing that when I started dating someone else,"

"Well you two broke up didn't you?" Lily asked, "Right before Summer Break?"

"Been tracking my love life, Evans?"

"Go to hell Potter," Lily answered waving her hands around.

"Anyway, I wanted to apologize to you, for harassing you like that for years, asking you out, embarrassing you in front of your friends,"

"Oh," Lily said. Was this really happening? "Um..okay I guess...Thanks?"

"Look, Evans -- Lily, can I call you that? Anyway, I am not proud of the arrogant jerk bully I was back then, this last year, this whole war, honestly, it caused me to grow the hell up, I was better last year -At least I think so- Regulus and our messy breakup caused me to think this summer Lily, about how I never apologized to you, I knew I'd changed, but the people I hurt didn't, and now we are head boy and girl, so can we be friends?" James said, then he held out his hand as a peace offering, Lily took it.

"Thank you for saying that Po- James," Lily said, "We can leave the surnames behind.

"Works for me," James said, "Anyway we better discuss rounds before the prefects get here,"

When the prefects left for rounds Lily and James were left sitting in silence. "So Lily," James asked kind of awkwardly, "How was your summer?"

"Bearable, yours?" Lily asked, looking away.

"Filled with sadness and loneliness, y'know after the breakup," James confessed, "I was pathetic really, but Marls really helped,"

"Yea, she has a habit of that," Lily giggled.

James smiled and laughed, "Yea, yea she does," he stopped, "Hey, want to go back to the normal compartments?" he asked, "Bet the girls and The Marauders are all there,"

"That's a stupid name," Lily said laughing, "Ours is way better,"

"The Galls, seriously Evans, don't challenge my nicknaming skills,"

"Nicknaming? That's not a real word...Potter" Lily said as he hit James on the shoulder playfully, "Anyway what is with the surname?"

"It's familiar, I could use familiar right now," James said

"Hey," Lily said, "What's up? I get the breakup and all, but I thought you were over him?"

"Maybe I'll tell you on a trip to Hogsmead," James said, though he was laughing Lily could tell he was holding information from her, but she played along.

"Not a change Potter," she said, "Hey, is the offer to meet our friends still on?"

"Yea, let's go!"

"Let's go,"

"Hii," Marlene said, giggling as she kept letting Dorcas braid her hair, she looked at Alice and Frank who were kissing and acted like she was throwing up.

"How'd you like the surprise Red?" Sirius asked, giggling. Remus chuckled, "Hey Lils at least it's not Snape," he said.

"Ouch," James said, he was about to complain to Lily when she cut them off, yelling. "Call me Red again Black I'll set your hair on fire,"

"Hey, do not mess with my perfect hair Evans, it is the best one in the world," Sirius said, running his hands through his long 'perfect' curls.

"You mean third best," James said, "I'm the best of course, and Lily is close second sorry mate," Everyone laughed as Sirius muttered words like 'traitor' and 'simp'. "You are a cheat, Pete, you Rat!" Mary McDonald yelled out of nowhere everyone laughed once more at Mary's overreaction at losing a game of Exploding Snap. Then the laughs stopped for good when screams started coming from the halls of the train, "DEATH EATERS! RUN! SAVE YOURSELVES!"
