Chapter Text
Brain Freeze Bro's
It had been three days. Three days since Foggy had officially met his roommate, Matt Murdock. Fog had been beyond surprised at the revelation—that his roomie was an insanely good-looking blind man, with a childhood hero complex. It had been awkward at first. Foggy thought he’d broken the tension with his vision of their ‘wingmen’ escapades, gathering luscious ladies into their folds, but alas, Matt seemed hardly interested in that scene.
Matt kept to himself, his belongings were neatly placed on his side of the room, it was distinctly pristine with a place for every minute belonging. Fog had taken to that lifestyle for the first night or so before his clothing and stationary began finding crooks and crannies throughout the miniature dorm. An open bag of nacho chips lay half opened, creating an unbearable reek that wafted up to the roof before being redistributed by the fan. Matt's senses were rather delicate. This allowed for seemingly minuscule errs to hammer at him, and Foggy was entirely unaware of this fact.
Foggy had however noticed the growing discomfort in Matt, and he even took to vacuuming the floors—a feat he’d rather exercise before completing. It didn’t help their relationship that Foggy constantly forgot about Matt’s blindness, continuously creating gestures and expecting a reaction, and even throwing a drink in his direction. Foggy had never been the popular type. This was obvious, especially in any schooling institution, he hardly had a true friend before. He knew that in order to stop the relationship from moving further downhill, he’d have to spend more time with Matt and do actual friend-stuff. And thus, he decided lunch out would be a fair place to start.
Foggy approached Matt, noticing his earphones, and taking a mental note to be subtle. “Hey Matt,” he cleared his throat and gently shook his roomie's shoulder.
Matt jerked back, yanking out his buds and putting the device down. “What?” he replied, not wanting to sound nearly as agitated. Foggy was clearly a good person, and he tried his best to be inclusive and kind. However, he was also a magnet for poor hygiene and accidents—both of which Murdock was less than inclined to.
“Wanna go out for lunch? There’s this place a bit down the road, apparently everyone’s going to it. They have the best smoothies, oh- and you can finally put your wonderful Maverick skills to the test. C’mon, it’ll be fun!” Fog enthusiastically chirped, over-pronouncing each syllable along with a large amount of volume.
“Sure,” Matt stood, grabbing his cane and a comfy jacket. Foggy dramatically swung the door open, and began belching a Christmas song—despite the holiday being a matter of months away. Some neighboring roommate on the floor yelled for him to shut up, gaining an even higher note in response. Matthew broke his sessile face and began smiling and shaking his head; perhaps this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Foggy finished recalling the tale of his family’s Christmas underwear tradition. Apparently, every family member was given a pair of underwear, some of which were very strange. The victim then had to wear it on their head and announce their gratitude until all of the presents were unwrapped. Matt was more disturbed than anything, but laughed nonetheless.
“Wha- what if it’s, like, a thong?” Matt breathed out, wiping a tear from his eye using one hand.
“Oh, that’s child's play. We get really creative, even last year, Allen gave me a Santa hat with two leg holes,” Foggy proudly announced. He made it sound like it was the best thing ever, and maybe it was. Matt wouldn’t know. The closest he’d ever had to Christmas—or extended family for that matter, was the covent and the small holiday celebrations the nuns would organize. However, all the other children weren’t necessarily his friends and they didn’t feel like family either. He wondered if he’d ever experience it as Foggy had. Or if he wanted to.
As they approached the cafe, Foggy swung the glass door open, extending his hand out to point the way; even though he knew Matt wouldn’t see it. “M'lady, three steps to the right,” he offered, grabbing Matt’s arm to sit him down. At first, Matt was shocked at this gesture. He wasn’t used to people leading him, but it felt pleasant.
“Hey there boys, how can I help you today?” a young woman with a fair complexion and a well kept composure met their table. She must’ve gotten a job between her college classes, it seemed like a reasonable assumption. Not only was she a similar age, but insanely attractive.
“Oh, wow. Matt, I know you can’t see this but she’s gorgeous,” Foggy jokingly whispered and pointed, well aware that she could hear him. She smiled, winking in return. “I’ll take a strawberry shake, don’t hold back on the whipped-cream,” he grinned, handing over the menu.
“Would you be able to uh, do a mango milkshake? I can’t exactly read the menu if you know what I mean,” Matt chuckled at his comment, pretending to feel around for the list.
“Here, I got you,” the waitress picked up the sheet of plastic. Her cheeks were flushed, and she rushed off into the kitchen.
“See? I’m telling ya, Maverick and Goose. We’re little gooslings- geeslings? In an open ocean, and we were made to find each other. There’s a whole new realm of fish I’ve only dreamt of,” Foggy clamped his hands together, sitting back and smiling at the opportunity.
“Here’s your mango milkshake Matt,” the waitress extended her arm, grabbing Matt’s hand so he could find the glass. “And here’s yours,” she handed Fog a tall pink drink with a tower of fluffy white cream.
“Wait! Don’t touch your drink yet. I have an idea, let’s have a competition. Whoever downs their very chilly cup first wins. Loser gets to pay the bill, and forever live in shame,” Foggy pulled up his sleeves, flexing his nonexistent muscles.
“Foggy, I- I’ll get a brain freeze, even though I don’t know why they call it that. It’s really your body maintaining homeostasis by heating up in response to the sudden cold,” Matt shook his head, putting up his hands.
“You’re too smart, and you’ve ruined brain freezes for me. Forever. Just do the damn competition,” he faked anger and exasperation. It sounded so fake, Matt began doing his light little laugh that girls swoon over.
“Fine, fine. Three, two, one, go,” Matthew began drinking through the straw at an incredibly speedy rate, while Foggy took to a different tactic. He removed the plastic straw, and began sipping it in large amounts. Despite his great attempts, Foggy still managed to take second place.
Matt squeezed his eyes shut and endured the momentary pain, taking a few seconds before his body began to return to its normal state.
“I almost won,” Foggy moaned out in defeat.
“Pretty sure that’s called losing. How’s your life of shame so far?” Foggy rolled his eyes in response to Matt’s comment, only realizing afterwards that it'd go unnoticed.
“I was rolling my eyes by the way,” It seemed there was a layer of apology along with his narration.
“I figured, it gets easy to tell after a while. Anyways, don’t worry. I can pay,” Matt began pulling out his wallet, taking a ten dollar bill. Those were folded horizontally in half.
“No, no, no. Fair is fair,” Foggy began patting down his pockets, sighing in annoyance. “I forgot my wallet.”
It turned out to be okay. Matt assured Foggy that it was all worth it in the end, as he got the waitresses number after a small chat. Despite all of Fog’s obvious flaws and loud tendencies, Matt knew they were going to be best buds. They were going to be two of the best wing-men ever, swiveling their way through law school as an unstoppable force. Matt held on tighter to Foggy’s left arm with a new sense of comfort. Foggy wasn’t going anywhere, and neither was Matthew.
