Work Text:

Sleeping without Matt by your side is never easy. For as long as you could remember, you've had trouble sleeping. Having Matt next to you helps. The way he wraps his arms around you makes you feel warm and safe.

Ever since finding out about Matt's vigilante escapades as Daredevil, you've grown used to him coming home late.

Matt always tells you not to wait up. He never wants you to lose sleep waiting for him each night.

And yet, without his warmth, you’re always up regardless.

This time—as Matt silently sneaks back into the apartment—you're on the couch, wearing one of his hoodies. He pauses before he starts taking off the suit.

"I thought I said not to wait up." He sounds simultaneously concerned and amused.

"I wasn't," you assure him. Not purposely, anyways. "Couldn't sleep."

Matt quickly changes into something comfortable and sits next to you, pulling you close. You rest your head on his shoulder, heaving a content sigh. As always, he's so warm, and you feel more at ease already just from the contact.

He can't help laughing to himself when he feels the tension immediately leave your body.

"That bad without me, huh?" The teasing edge to his voice doesn't go unnoticed, but you can't lie to him regardless.

You hum. "Always is."

Somehow, you don't mind. Even though he comes home bruised and in pain every night—sometimes much worse, to your dismay—seeing him come home eases your worries.

Maybe, to some degree, you find yourself unable to sleep because you worry so much about him. But you'd much prefer to see him come home alive than worry something might go wrong while you sleep.

Matt knows you far too well and seems to have that figured out by now. "Promise me you'll get some rest now?" He kisses your forehead, looking very concerned for someone who probably has bruises and wounds you can't even see right now.

"Only if you'll promise to let me patch you up first." You stifle a yawn, though Matt notices anyways. He always does.

Matt chuckles and shakes his head. "I think you're a little too tired for that right now," he says. "I'll be fine, okay?"

You don't fully believe that, and you can't help glancing up at him with a look of disbelief. He may not be able to see it, but you're sure he can sense that you're not giving up.

"At least let me get you an ice pack or something."

He knows he won't win. Not that Matt doesn't secretly love how stubborn you are about taking care of him. He doesn't feel that he deserves it, but he knows by now not to stop you.

Before he can protest, you pry yourself from him long enough to grab an ice pack. You wrap it in a cloth or two and pull him towards the bedroom.

Without hesitation, Matt collapses onto the bed, making room for you as you join him. It's clear he's exhausted, even if he'll never admit it.

As you help him ice his bruises and make sure he's not too badly injured, you give him a few quick kisses. He's still stiff and probably sore, but he's already at ease just being home with you again.

Once you're satisfied that Matt will be fine until morning, you snuggle up to him and absentmindedly run your fingers through his hair. He hums in content, admittedly melting at your touch as he always does.

As much as he protests, you're determined to stay up long enough to ensure that he sleeps. Every night, he's out for hours and winds up hurt. If anyone deserves a good night's rest, it's Matt.

Thankfully, it isn't long before he's passed out in your arms. For just this moment, he looks peaceful for a change.

As much as you'd love to stay up and savor this moment, you can already feel yourself drifting off to sleep as well. Though you know you'll be worried about him in the morning, you give in for now, glad that Matt's finally home and safe with you.
