A bump in the road loosened the threads of his sleep, and an abrupt “fuck” from Elliott ripped it apart altogether. Shayne groaned, becoming all too aware of his own hand pressing into the side of his face as he leaned on the inside of the car door and struggled not to wake all the way up.

“I’m so sorry, Fee,” Elliott was murmuring from the front seat. “I didn’t see that pothole. I’ll try to be a bit more careful.”

A soft groan came from the other front seat, the one directly in front of Shayne. He couldn’t see the back of Felix’s head like he could when they’d set off. Shayne frowned and sat up, wincing at a tight pain in his neck, looking for a glimpse of Felix’s mint hair.

The boy was curled forward in his seat, one hand holding his head up from between his knees, the other grasping a plastic bag.

“We can pull over soon, gorgeous,” Elliott murmured softly. His voice was so low and soft that Shayne shrank back in his seat, sensing it wasn’t something he was supposed to be listening to. There was also a strong smell of vomit in the car that he didn’t exactly want to lean into.

A high-pitched whine came from Felix, which may or may not have been made up of words. A second later, there was a weak splash, the plastic bag rustling as he threw up, evidentially not for the first time.

“There you go, you’re okay,” Elliott whispered. He pulled one hand from the steering wheel and reached across the seats, presumably to stroke Felix’s back.

Felix retched again, this time with a little more force. Elliott clicked his tongue, his eyes flicking away from the road and towards his sick partner every so often.

“Two minutes until the rest stop, gorgeous. It’s okay.” Elliott was still using that smooth voice to try and soothe Felix and ease him through the motion sickness. “I’m so sorry you feel sick, boo, please just hang in there, okay? I’ve got you…”

Shayne sank a little lower in his seat, feeling more and more disgusting by the second. He wondered if Elliott had forgotten he was back here, because he’d never heard his older cousin speak like this before. He curled his arm against the door again and pressed his head into it, wishing he could just to back to sleep.

Felix retched a few more times before the car finally came to a stop, drawing up waves of his stomach contents and weak little belches. Elliott unlocked both their seatbelts as soon as he put the car in park, and Shayne heard him whispering softly to Felix.

“… don’t know,” Felix whimpered in response. “I just want it to stop.”

“I know you do, boo.” A kiss was placed. Possibly exchanged. Shayne flinched, wishing he’d alerted them to his awareness instead of feigning sleep.

“Let’s go for a tiny walk,” Elliott suggested. “Don’t move, okay? I’ll come around to your side to get you. You get a bit wobbly when your belly is upset, hmm?”

“Mmhmm,” Felix mumbled, letting out a breathy laugh. “Oh, gosh, Elli, is Shayne awake? Did he hear me getting sick?”

Elliott was silent for a second, and Shayne’s heart clenched with the realisation that he was probably looking back. That was when he should have opened his eyes and showed Elliott that he was awake, but it felt as though inserting himself into the scene would somehow disrupt everything, maybe even make Elliott resort to his usual impatient self. He stayed still, focusing on trying to breathe the correct amount for a sleeping person.

“I think we’re okay,” Elliott murmured, and Shayne couldn’t help fixating on the ‘we’. “Let’s not wander too far from the car, or he’s going to wake up very confused.”

Felix gave a groan of agreement.

“You poor thing,” Elliott said, and there was another kiss, before there were car doors opening, and he was taking a very frail Felix for a tiny walk.
