Chapter Text
Today was a sunny day, a clear forecast, October 13th.
“Happy 17th Birthday Dazai Nico!” - Those were the fellow members of the Armed Detective Agency. Frivolous and sincere, not falling behind shallow and always a step ahead more meritorious.
The young lady turning 17th gaped in awe, her eyes gleaming with thrill as she watched them surround her with confetti and birthday wishes. She takes a look around at all of them and gives them a smile of gratitude before her gaze falls on her elder brother, Dazai Osamu. He nods and smiles with pride.
After the crowd had finally dispersed, exhausted from the excitement, Nico approached her brother. She takes note of her making sure her blouse tucked in and her hair brushed properly before sitting beside him on the couch.
“You look distraught sweety,” the older Dazai initiates, “What’s on your mind?”
Nico speaks up slowly, “Well… I just thought of… You know… Wasn’t it at this age that you became an executive for the Port Mafia?”
“And… you’re thinking about where you are now, is that it?”
“Yeah…”
Dazai shrugs and sighs with a childlike tone, “But of course, such a clever and handsome person like me - who’d not believe that this intelligent and proper lady is my younger sister.”
Nico lets out a chortle and pokes her brother’s temple, “Cut it out nii-chan I’m serious…”
“Alright, alright… I’m all ears. Let me listen to whatever I didn’t have time to listen to back then.”
.:. .:. .:.
“Heaven forbid if beauty were to have a substance.”
The weather chilled when November began, there was barely any heat to absorb for the pitch dark walls that surrounded the everyday headquarters of the Port Mafia. That left some people, like Dazai Nico, cold in the small confines of a small office as she waited for her brother.
Dazai Nico was small and agile, she was well fed and had healthy plump cheeks. Her tresses resembled her brother’s, long and wavy, framing her face flawlessly. Her hands were small as it clutched itself around the haori of the woman whom’s lap she sits on.
“Are you cold? It’ll be just a while longer before your brother comes back, do you want hot tea maybe?`` The lady was Kouyou Ozaki, who’s haori and kimono shone of scarlet and pink shades and was the least Nico had other than her white wooly sweater.
A childhood companion, not older than Nico by a year, approaches them with a book in his hand. His eyes were like crescent moons and his smile reminiscent of an eternal night - or death in general.
Kouyou’s eyebrows furrowed in concern, “Kyuu - stay put now. Wait until Dazai-kun returns and then you can have your fun.”
The young boy pouts in fury, “No I want to play with Nico!”
“Nico is feeling unwell right now, now leave her alone-”
“It’s okay Kouyou-sama, I don’t mind playing with Kyuu,” Nico smiled at Q kindly before making her way to him.
Kouyou huffs, “Oh dear lord please don’t let anything happen to that child.”
“Look Nico, I found this book about summoning spirits using this board they provide us in the book,” Q informs with excitement, “It’s super cool, we have to try it together! Maybe we can talk to zombies!”
“That sounds cool! Maybe we can be friends with them,” Nico agrees without hesitation.
Q takes the board from between the pages of the book and sets it down on the floor between them. He then places a small coin in the middle of the board, his finger pressing down on the edge of the coin, “Come on you too Nico!”
And Nico puts her finger on the coin.
“Let’s try calling Kokkuri san. Kokkuri… Kokkuri… Kokkuri san… Can you tell us if you’re here with us?” Q calls out in a haunting manner, his orbs scanning the board to see if there were any movements.
Y… E… S…
“Q… Isn’t kokkuri san…?”
“It’s fine! Let’s keep going! Tell us something!”
D... E… A…
“Q… I don’t like this…”
T… H…
A bell tolls 3 times in Nico’s head, as if everything that surrounded her melted in her gaze. She saw red only, she screeches inhumanely as she backs away from the board, her feet trashing in a possessed manner.
“Kyuu what did you do!?” Kouyou screams in horror.
Q backs away, his body frozen and his gaze trained on Nico’s paling features. Her eyes rolled back till all she could see were the white parts of it, blood streamed from her tear ducts as she let out a disturbing choking sound.
Kouyou frantically runs to the young girl and brings the latter to her lap. The mature maiden stared in horror, Nico’s mouth hung agape as she vomited strings of blood onto the polished floor of the office they were in. With a quick decision Kouyou calls for the mafioso standing by the door, “Call Dazai-kun and Master Ougai! NOW!”
“Oh my poor girl you’ll be fine…”
But Nico made no response, her nails scratched her own wrist as if she was a soul in pain with her own physical vessel.
When Dazai and Ougai had returned, Dazai could only stare in shock as he pressed his hand against his own sister’s cheek. Just then all spasm ceased from Nico’s body, a small spirit screeched as it escaped from her body.
“Who are you?” Ougai asks.
The coin on the board moves.
J… O… S… E… I… T… O… ( schoolgirl )
Nico was 4 when this had occurred.
