Work Text:
After hearing the car horn that announced his boyfriend's arrival, Hiccup exited the house and hurried over to where Viggo was parked in the driveway. He couldn’t help but grin as he opened the car door, feeling excited about the night ahead. It was New Year's Eve and Viggo was taking him to the lakehouse that he owned on the outskirts of town. A nice getaway with just the two of them.
In the past, Hiccup spent New Year's Eve with friends and family, where the celebrations were often noisy and contained a lot of alcohol. He’d enjoyed himself at these parties, but he was rather looking forward to spending this one with just Viggo, where it would hopefully be a lot more quiet.
“Good afternoon, my dear.” Viggo’s tone was smooth, like a rich honey and it made Hiccup’s heart do a little flutter.
“And good afternoon to you, too,” Hiccup replied, leaning over to give Viggo a quick kiss before buckling up his seatbelt. He hoisted his overnight pack into the backseat just as Viggo began reversing, then turned to face the front again, getting comfortable for the long drive ahead. “How was your day?”
Viggo hummed. “Oh, it was the usual. Grumpy business associates and even grumpier customers. How was yours?”
Hiccup made a sympathetic noise and reached over to massage the back of Viggo’s neck. “Not so bad, we finished early today.”
Viggo angled his head to the left, enjoying the relief the pressure of Hiccup’s hand gave against the tense muscles in his neck. “Lucky for some,” Viggo replied. His tone was teasing and held no jealousy or bitterness. Not that Hiccup was expecting any of course. After all, it was their jobs that had led them to find each other a few months ago.
Hiccup was a car mechanic at a local workshop. One which serviced the leased cars that were owned by businesses. Viggo’s business was one of the many they dealt with and one day he’d come into the workshop to arrange a service on his own personal car. The two got chatting when Viggo had come in to pay the bill, both finding that they shared similar interests, including literature and a love for dragons. It was there that a connection was made, which followed into a romance after a few dates.
Hiccup, nor Viggo, were bothered about the age gap between them, though they had dealt with quite a few remarks from others, mostly from their families. Thankfully, Hiccup’s friends were among those that were accepting of their relationship, despite having never met Viggo before. His best friend, Astrid, had told Hiccup that as long as he was happy, that was the main thing. It was something Hiccup very much appreciated, knowing that his friends supported him and valued his happiness above all else.
After an hour of driving, Hiccup stretched his prosthetic leg out the best he could, trying to avoid pain developing there from having it bent for a long period of time. He tried to be discreet, not wanting to give away that he was in any discomfort. However, his efforts failed when Viggo glanced over, immediately catching on to what he was trying to do.
“Are you in any pain?” he asked before turning his gaze back to the stretch of road in front of them.
“Oh, no, I’m fine. Really,” Hiccup quickly answered and readjusted himself in the seat.
Viggo let out a sigh. “You don’t have to pretend with me, Hiccup.” He reached out a hand and placed it on his thigh, giving it a light squeeze to offer reassurance and comfort. “Why don’t you remove the prosthetic for now, perhaps that would help?”
Hiccup shook his head. “It’s okay. I will be fine. It’s not much longer, right?”
“Just under an hour to go. A good soak in the outdoor hot tub tonight might be soothing for any pain.”
The thought of relaxing in a hot tub sounded very appealing to Hiccup and it caused his excitement to almost double. He wondered what else might be at this lake house.
“That sounds fantastic,” Hiccup remarked cheerfully. “What other things do you have out there?”
Viggo chuckled. “Oh, all sorts of things, my dear. And I think it will be to your liking.”
Now, Hiccup’s excitement was skyrocketing. He couldn’t wait to finally arrive. “Do I get a hint? Or is it a surprise?”
“A surprise,” Viggo confirmed, smirking slightly at the disappointed look that Hiccup sent his way. “And I must say, you do look adorable pouting like that.”
That caused Hiccup to snort and roll his eyes, which made Viggo chuckle even more. He couldn’t even pretend to be mad though. It was all light-hearted fun anyway.
The rest of the drive went by quickly, with them arriving just before sunset. As Viggo drove up the long drive to where the lake house was, Hiccup couldn’t help but gape at all the surroundings. It was beyond stunning, with a lush, green forest and a beautiful garden area. And of course the private lake in front, its calm, silvery-blue water highlighted with orange from the setting sun.
“This is…amazing,” Hiccup said out loud. His jaw all but dropped when he caught sight of the lakehouse. It was massive and likely capable of housing a lot more than just the two of them. The mix of stone and wood exterior, along with the large windows, were definitely eye-catching and it was very much like Viggo to incorporate vintage and modern decor.
“I’m delighted to hear that it meets your expectations,” Viggo told him as he opened the car door after they had parked in the garage. “Just wait until you see inside.”
Hiccup grinned from ear to ear, accepting Viggo’s outstretched hand to assist him out of the car’s seat. He followed Viggo through the door, his head turning in all directions to take everything in. The place was even more amazing on the inside, from the large kitchen, to the main living area containing plush armchairs in front of a warm fireplace and the party room where a pool table, chess board and bar were set up.
“Before we get settled in, I’d like to show you something,” Viggo said, gesturing down a long hallway.
Hiccup followed him down the hallway, his heart beating in anticipation as to what this could be. He waited as Viggo pushed the double doors open and entered the room behind him, gasping when he realised what this room was. “You have your own library?!” His eyes roamed over the many shelves that were fully stocked with books. “This is…Have I died? Have I died and gone to heaven or something? Because this feels like heaven to me.”
Viggo let out a laugh, coming over to wrap an arm around Hiccup’s shoulder. “I thought you might appreciate this little space. My brother never fully understood my love for books, always criticising this room as a waste of valuable space. So I am delighted that it will also be enjoyed by someone other than myself.”
Hiccup frowned at the thought of books being considered a waste. He leant into Viggo’s side and rested his head against his shoulder. “I can assure you that this room will be very much enjoyed by me.”
“Why don’t you explore here for a bit and I will go do a few preparations,” Viggo suggested.
Hiccup only nodded mutely, already engrossed with a book he’d taken off the shelf. He barely even noticed Viggo exiting the room. When he returned, Hiccup was sitting in one of the arm chairs, halfway through the book he’d picked out.
“A good book?” Viggo questioned from the doorway, his hands folded behind his back.
Hiccup looked up and smiled, quickly putting something to mark where he was up to before placing it down. “Sorry—got a bit carried away there.”
Viggo waved him off. “No need to apologise, my dear. Dinner is ready, if you would like to follow me through to the dining room.”
They made their way to the dining room, sitting down to share a hearty meal of roast meat and vegetables that Viggo had prepared, along with some fancy wine.
Despite the large meal, Hiccup found that the wine was already making him feel giddy and he was thankful for Viggo’s suggestion to go outside for some fresh air. They sat on the chairs, both huddled under a blanket as they appreciated the quiet surroundings and engaged in conversation. It was so peaceful there that it almost felt strange, especially when compared to the busy city life. Hiccup found he very much enjoyed this lakehouse, almost wishing they could stay there together, in their own little bubble.
The time ticked by without either of them noticing it and before they knew it, it was almost eleven thirty. Meaning that there was now half an hour left until midnight.
“Would you be interested in soaking in the hot tub now?” Viggo gestured to the hot tub a few feet away where it overlooked the lake and forest area.
“I would very much be interested,” Hiccup replied with great enthusiasm.
Viggo unwound the blanket from around himself and headed over to the hot tub, pulling off the cover.
While Viggo prepared the hot tub, Hiccup carefully removed his prosthetic, along with his clothes and left them behind on the chairs. He’d planned to hop the rest of the way to the hot tub but Viggo had already come over to offer assistance. Generally, Hiccup felt self-conscious about needing help, but there was something about Viggo caring for him like this that made him feel safe and loved.
“There we are,” Viggo said after helping Hiccup to sit down. “How is it?”
“Mmmm, so good,” Hiccup replied and gave a long drawn out sigh. The temperature of the water, along with the pressure of the jets hitting his back, was very relaxing. Just what he needed. He turned to look at Viggo, who was only just beginning to undress himself. “But it would be even better if you were in here as well.”
Viggo chuckled and tossed his clothes in the chair's direction. “I’d be more than happy to oblige.” He slid in next to Hiccup, lifting up his arm so Hiccup could lean against him.
“Thank you so much for inviting me here.”
Hiccup titled his head up to look at Viggo just as he looked down, their eyes meeting. There was no telling who made the first move, or whether they’d just met in the middle, all Hiccup knew was that his lips were on Viggo’s own. The kiss was as heated as the water in which they sat in; with hands grabbing at shoulders and heavy pants that echoed around them.
Hiccup’s head was still spinning when they finally separated and his lips were swollen and tingling. Yet he couldn’t help but want more, in fact, he didn’t even care if they missed the countdown of New Year’s completely. All he wanted was Viggo. However, it seemed his boyfriend had other ideas, given that he removed his arms from around Hiccup to retrieve his phone from nearby.
“Five minutes to go,” Viggo informed him. “Not long to go now.”
“Got any ideas on how to pass the time?” Hiccup questioned, hoping he would take the hint.
Viggo tutted, appearing amused. “My dear, there is plenty of time for that. First, there is something I wish to show you.”
He beckoned him to come closer and Hiccup obliged, happy to have his arms around him again.
“What is it?” Hiccup asked curiously.
Viggo brought his mouth close to Hiccup’s ear, his breath tickling as he whispered, “Look to the sky.”
Hiccup frowned, feeling confused but lifted his gaze to the inky sky above them. The only things he saw were the moon and the stars, all of which were beautiful, but not exactly what he was expecting.
Almost as if Viggo had read his mind, he brought his mouth back to his ear. “Keep looking.”
Hiccup nodded mutely and continued to scan the night sky. The moment it happened, he almost jumped right out of the spa in fright. Multiple bangs sounded and the sky lit up with colourful explosions, all shooting in different directions. He couldn’t help but gasp at the display of fireworks that were lighting up the sky, directly across from the lake in front of them.
“Happy New Year’s,” Viggo shouted over the loud bangs. He was wearing a large grin on his face.
Hiccup’s mouth opened and closed. He was in shock to think that Viggo had gone to so much effort to make this such a special New Year’s. Instead, he pressed his lips back against Viggo’s, hoping that it was enough to show just how much he appreciated this thoughtful gesture. “Happy New Year’s,” he finally managed to say after the surprise had worn off and he’d caught his breath. “How did you even make that possible?”
Viggo smiled widely. “Oh, it was all quite simple really. I had a wireless firework igniter installed which can be triggered through using a certain app on a phone.”
“That’s…amazing. And you did it all for me?”
“Well of course. Who else would I do it for?” Viggo replied, a little confused.
“I—thank you so much. I can’t even begin to say how much this all means to me,” Hiccup told him sincerely. No one had ever gone to such an effort for him before. It was just another reason to love Viggo even more. To know that this man—who everyone else saw as an arrogant businessman—was capable of doing such kind and thoughtful acts.
“You are most welcome,” Viggo answered, looking pleased that Hiccup had enjoyed his gift. “Now, you had an idea on how we could pass the time?”
Hiccup grinned. “I may have, but first, I want to stay here for a bit longer.”
“As you wish, my dear.”
