Chapter 1: Cookienap

Chapter Text

Mango was soundly sleeping on the canoe. Even if it had been days since his ritual, he still felt the lack of energy get to him. Hence the falling asleep often. The canoe was silently drifting in the river. It changes when a big red dragon with small bits of green had landed near and hastily and sloppily tried to pick up Mango, canoe and all. It took a moment but the ferocious dragon grinned when they finally had the small cookie in their hands. With a few beats of their wings, they took off to their den. Not knowing someone in the water had watched them kidnap him.

Pitaya had been told about Mango's ritual, and they had taken him to train him to be a real dragon, one that could fight foes and hoard well deserved treasure. It couldn't hurt if Pitaya just borrowed Ananas's son for some time, right? They'll think of the consequences later. They carried the canoe with them, trying to not wake up the cookie in it.

It wasn't too long till Mango was at the big dragon's den, and he was just waking up. He was surrounded by hills of gold and treasures. "Took you long enough, little dragon.." he heard a booming voice speak. He held his oar for safety but didn't dare to move or answer whatever spoke. "Hey, I'm talking to you! Kid of Ananassss" Mango gulps as he turned around to look at the menacing dragon standing above him. "Me?" He points to himself, voice cracking in fear.

The dragon laughs, loud and deep with snorts. "Yesssss.." they said with a hiss. They craned their neck down to look at the cookie. "Never thought you would be thissss.. ssmall, dragonet." they strongly patted Mango on the head with a claw, which scared him. He just held the oar with his life as he was on his knees, eyes closed and trembling. At that moment, Pitaya knew they weren't going anywhere with training the kid while he's scared of their mighty dragon form. So they shrank down to their cookie form which they saw as inferior, yet it did not scare cookies as much. "Kid. Kid look at me." They snaps their claws in front of Mango. "Isss thisss better?" Pitaya looked inpatient. The child just nodded, gulping in fear. "Good, good! We can sssstart the training sssesssssion assss you look like a dragon." They told.

"Okay.. I'm not good at doing it, though. Haven't really tried." Mango shook his head. He tried his best to turn into a dragon, wings and tail appearing behind him and horns curling around his head. "Did it work?" He asks the dragon. "Yessss, yess. You passssed the ritual and became a dragon.. if not a sssmall one." They put their claws near his hat to see the height. "Now. What are your powersss?" "My.. powers?" Mango was confused. "Fire, moving the earth and ssstoness, draining life. Powersss like thosse." "Draining life..?" "What isss your power?" Pitaya interrupted.

"..I guess mine might be controlling the waves. Well, maybe. I've had waves push my canoe the direction I was going more often than not!" Mango had observed. "Ssso you want to try your claw at pushing wavesss with your will?" Pitaya said with a big laugh. "Very well."  They grab the boy by the hand and flew up, Mango clinging onto them in fear. "Flight training isss next, your parent won't alwaysss be flying you everywhere! You have to learn it." "There's so many things to learn about being a dragon.." Mango sighs. Will he learn to do all those things? He is unsure.

Pitaya lands and Mango hopping off of the dragon. This part of the cave had a stream running by. "I wassss born a dragon, you weren't. Even then I had to learn to fly. Now, ussse your power gifted to you!" Mango stared upon the water, looking at his hands and unsure. "I don't know where to start." He looked at the dragon. Pitaya growls in impatience. "Jusst do sssomething!" They hissed. The islander nods and brought his hand close to the stream. He was cautious of the dangerous water.

He feels the moisture of the air. Mango was a bit nervous but he breathed in and dipped his hand. He immediately pulled it out and looked for sogginess or crumbs. There weren't any. He tried again, his wings folding up tight in concentration. The stream was rapid, and splatters were to be expected. He swears the splatter was stronger when he held the hand near. His eyes widen as the water flowed close to him. Mango stood up and the water drew back into the stream. "Not bad, but not too good. Keep going!" "Okay, okay!" He sat down near the stream and tried doing the power again. The tiniest of waves brought water around him again. He sighed in relief and smiled.

He hovered his hand near the water and he saw how a small bit of water was dragged around as he moved his hand. He lifts his hand and the water began to flow back, when he brought it down the water followed. He began drawing with the water as it left trails on the stone ground. Pitaya was mildly impressed, but the dragonet needs to do more than that.

"You saw my son being taken by a red dragon?!" Ananas slams their claw on the throne. They were furious. "Y-yes..!" The local islander yelped. "The dragon took him away!" Ananas pinched his nose and growled. "PITAYA!!" they roar into the sky as they grew to become a dragon and flew off to find the dragon that took their son. "Don't worry Mango, my son.. I'll save you from them." They thought to themself
