Work Text:
Hanamiya Makoto didn’t really like his birthday. From a young age, he started to see this day as just another boring day – if not somewhat worse some years. His mother would always bake him a cake, and attempt to buy him whatever he wanted, but coming from a poor background made that difficult. He never got the top of the range gadgets, or other super popular things all the other kids his age had. Plus, to him his birthday always meant one thing – his father would be around more than usual. Hanamiya had a strained relationship with his father. Ever since he was born, Hanamiya remembers the man as nothing but an abusive leech, who did nothing but put him and his mother down. Their lack of money also stemmed to him as well, as the loser would spend it on drink and other useless things, leaving them barely being able to survive. Of course, soon enough his mother grew a backbone and kicked the male out of the house, getting a restraining order and everything. From that point forward, the two of them only had each other, something Makoto didn’t exactly hate, per say.
It was no secret to those who knew Hanamiya decently well, that he cared deeply for his mother. Only a surround few actually knew about her, those being his old Senpai, Imayoshi (not that he wanted the other to find out, but the psychic freak was always good at reading him), his teammates and Yuu. Of course, when his mother found out he was dating someone his junior, she was curious, especially when she found out Yuu was a guy, not a girl. Hanamiya had dated both genders before, but only brought a few of his partners actually home with him. Yuu happened to be one of those. Of course, his mother fell in love with the pink-haired boy almost immediately, telling him he was always welcome there and so on. It was a little embarrassing for Makoto to be completely honest.
Now back to the issue at hand. Hanamiya’s birthday was coming up, and as usual, he wasn’t looking forward to it. Gone were the days as a child where he would stay hidden in his room while his parents fought, or the times he would get in between his mother and father and take the brutality of the older males hits himself. Instead, nowadays he would just spend the day like it was any normal day. Wake up, go to school, harass his teammates into actually practising, and then go home to spend it with his mom. Now don’t get me wrong, there have been a select few times this pattern was broken. During his middle school years, Imayoshi had taken him out somewhere. He can’t remember where, truthfully he tries to forget anything which relates itself to Imayoshi, as nothing but bad memories arise at their time together. Still, he had to admit at the time he appreciated the others gesture. The only other time happened to be last year, where his teammates happened to find out when his birthday was and decided to have a sleepover. At his house. Of course, his mother was ecstatic to finally meet his friends, but Hanamiya was anything but that.
Now this year, things were different. He had Yuu, and as much as he didn’t want to admit it, he kind of wished they would do something together. Not anything sappy, like go on a romantic walk or cuddle under a tree. I mean, who the hell would want to do something as cliché as that? Obviously not the Bad Boy himself. Yet, he craved some sort of affection from the other. Which is probably why he allowed himself to get into this situation to begin with. Lemme back up and explain real quick. A few days before his birthday, Yuu had come down to Kirisaki Daiichi. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for this to happen, seeing as they were dating and Makoto wasn’t exactly welcome at Touhou, even with Imayoshi now gone. Still, the other hardly turned up unannounced which made the Hanamiya curious. Originally he had thought someone had started a sight with Yuu and had checked him for any bruises or marks. Of course, he found nothing, which made him even more intrigued. Especially when Yuu said he was actually here to talk to Hara, not him. Now, Makoto isn’t one to be jealous, hell that’s one of the last feelings he has to worry about, but seeing his lilac haired teammate drape his arm around his boyfriend and drive him away from him, made him see red. Luckily for them, and unluckily for Hanamiya, Seto and Furuhashi happened to drag him away and keep him busy until the two had finished whatever the hell they were gossiping about.
Yuu had beamed at Hanamiya before he skipped off, leaving the other unable to ask what the hell that was about. He had turned to Hara, but the other was already practising and ignoring him. Needless to say, practice held a dangerous aura around it for the rest of that day. With his teammates being extremely quiet, which was unheard of, he stalked off after practice and ignored Yuu for the night. Petty, but he was still pissed off at whatever the hell that had been earlier. By the time his birthday actually came around, things had returned to a somewhat normal situation. He’d “forgiven” Yuu, who had been spamming him with crying emotes and other things to try and get his attention and had just pushed the whole issue to the back of his mind for the time being.
He went to school, received chocolate from his teammates and things seemed like they were going to be normal yet again. There was no sleepover at his house – he’d specifically told them last year it wasn’t happening again and funnily enough no one tried to bring it up. It made him suspicious as to what they were plotting and it made his mind drift back to what had happened those days prior. Hanamiya didn’t like the nervous feeling his gut gave him one bit.
As the day ended, practice went on as normal. Makoto had texted Yuu but heard nothing back, which was unheard of. He wondered if the other had gotten into an actual fight and was in the hospital. His teammates didn’t let him think on it too much, saying how they should all go back to his after practice had ended, something he was completely against.
“Oh come on Captain, just a few hours! I’m sure your mom will love to see us again!” Hara had a grin on his face as he spoke, words cheery. Yamazaki had nodded his head in agreement. Furuhashi said nothing, whereas Seto just yawned. “You know he won’t stop harassing you until you agree, Makoto.” Sometimes Hanamiya hated how right Seto was. He would let out a frustrated sigh, before huffing, “Fine. But I want you gone by the time it gets dark!”
This is how he ended up taking his teammates home with him later that night. Hara and Yamazaki were up ahead, happily chatting to each other. It made him uneasy. He knew something was up, but didn’t know exactly what it was. Seto and Furuhashi were not giving anything up, no matter how hard he pushed. “You’re acting like you’re being brought to your deathbed,” Seto had drawled with a roll of his eyes. Hanamiya had to hold back from thumping the other there and then. “You’ll like it, so stop complaining.” Furuhashi’s words were quiet, so quiet he almost missed it. That alone made him frown. What the actual hell had they planned this time? Seems only time would tell.
A surprise party was not what he had in mind. To be brutally honest, Hanamiya wasn’t sure what he had in mind, but it wasn’t this. From the outside, the house looked completely normal, but inside...dear god. There were balloons and banners in the colour scheme of his jersey, green and black. The giant “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” made him cringe inside, well he assumed it was inside. For all he knows, he could have a look of complete and utter shock? disgust? on his face right now. If he did tho, no one said anything.
There were pictures of him and his teammates, as well as him and Yuu, plastered all over the place as well. It honestly made him want to die. But he could see the happiness in Yuu’s eyes, as he hugged him tightly and muttered a “Happy Birthday Mako-chan.” His mother was also happy as she waved and then began taking pictures, much to his dislike. Still, he couldn’t help but feel somewhat grateful. He could see Yuu had put a lot of work and effort into this. “I asked Hara-chan to help me with the overall design and what to get. We then approached your mother and she was more than happy to help out!” He heard the pop of a bubble from the side of him. “I gotta admit, it turned out better than I had imagined it would.” The lilac haired male stated, collecting his gum back up before blowing another bubble.
Makoto was drawn back to a tug to his sleeve, glancing down at Yuu who was looking up at him with wide eyes. “So...did I do good?” The innocent sparkle in his eyes would normally make Hanamiya want to puke, and destroy something, but he couldn’t help how his eyes softened somewhat. His cheeks would tint pink as he patted Yuu on the head. “It’s fine I suppose.” The snickering of his teammates made him tense and glare over his shoulder, immediately shutting them up, while his mother just giggled softly, and ushered them all into the living room where presents could be opened and cake could be had.
With Yuu taking his hand, he would gently tug the other in, pulling him to sit down on the settee next to him. “Mako-chan, open mine first!” He was genuinely shocked that Yuu had got him a present, his eyes widening somewhat as it was placed in his lap. His mother had gone into the kitchen to get the cake, alongside Furuhashi who had gone to help. Hara and Yamazaki were holding their phones out, recording and snapping photos, while Seto had drifted back off to sleep.
“Seto-chan! Wake up or you’ll miss Mako-chan opening his presents!” Yuu’s cute whine caused the KiriDai Center to flick an eyelid open and groan. “Ughh, fine.” Hara would snicker and mess with Seto’s hair, causing the other to slap him at the back of the head. “Don’t touch my hair.” With his teammates being their usual selves, Makoto felt himself relax somewhat as he opened the present. He could see Yuu had taken his time wrapping this, and it made him curious as to what the other had gotten him. His eyes would widen more at what was set out in front of him.
Hanamiya wasn’t used to presents and definitely not presents of this extreme. He’d gotten chocolate, books and vouchers in the past many times. Imayoshi had even brought him a nice darts set which he still had – only cause it was of high quality! But what Yuu had gotten him trumped all of that…
“Do you like it? I’ve been saving for a while and I know you don’t have a proper set so...” His eyes would drift to the side, teeth nipping his lip in worry. Makoto would just stare at the present in front of him. It was a chemistry set, and not some kids one or a super cheap one. Like a proper, proper one. He assumed it at least cost 15,000 yen, if not more. He couldn’t help the mixture of emotions inside of him. On one hand, he was completely at a loss for words. Never had anyone went out of their way to get him something as special as this – par Imayoshi and the darts, but that pales in comparison. Yet, on the other hand, he actually felt somewhat bad cause Yuu had saved up all his money from his job just to buy him this.
He knew his teammates were watching, and that his mom and Furuhashi was back, from the way his mom had gasped. “...Mako-chan?” Yuu’s voice sounded so small right now, trying to gauge the other's reaction. “I-if you don’t like it, I can g-get you something else-” “Yuu, shut up.” His voice came out low but without the usual threat it would have. Instead, he would turn to his boyfriend and give him a genuine smile. “Thank you...I love it.” Of course, it was somewhat embarrassing to say that in front of so many people – especially his teammates – but right now he could care less about them. All he cared about was showing Yuu how grateful he truly was.
The way Yuu’s eyes lit up made his heart skip a beat. How on earth did he manage to get someone so pure and kind-hearted? And not screw it up completely? He truly didn’t know, but it made him relieved to have some light in his world, regardless. Cupping Yuu’s cheek, the other would look at his partner with confusion. “Mako-chan?” Saying nothing, Makoto would press his lips firmly yet gently against the younger males lips. Normally for Yuu, kissing Hanamiya was forceful and rough, yet this was the total opposite. He could feel the love the other had for him through how soft and gentle he was being. That alone made everything okay for Yuu.
“Who’d have thought the Captain could be so gentle?” Of course, Hara just had to open his mouth and ruin it. Furuhashi would shake his head. “Do you have a death wish Hara?” Yuu had to hold back a small chuckle as he and Makoto separated, and the older of the two sent a death glare at the lilac haired male. “You better start running, Hara, cause you are dead when I catch you.” A small squeak would leave Hara’s lips as he jumped up and began to run away. Feeling accomplished in terrorizing his teammate, Makoto would look back at Yuu and smile. Maybe as long as they’re together, he could learn to enjoy his birthday after all?
