Thanos raised his gloved hand, a grin on his face. Everyone stopped, this was the end. Thanos was one snap away from winning, he had all the stones and he was ready.
"I.. am.. Inevitable"
There was an empty clunk as Thanos' fingers snapped, nothing had happened. The avengers who were still standing looked around, and their eyes settled on Bucky, who's metal arm had the stones in. His gaze found Steve's, and before Steve could even try to stop him, Bucky had that charming boyish grin on his face.
"And I could do this all day"
All that could be seen was a white flash, and as peoples vision returned, Thanos' army was fading before them. Steve frantically looked around, and saw his best friend laying in the rubble, taking in shallow breaths.
"Bucky! Buck, hey its me. I'm here, just next to you"
Bucky mouthed Steve's name, but no sound came out. His chest shook with a silent chuckle, and a faint smile appeared on his face as Steve spoke.
"I'm here, Buck. I'm with you.."
He took his friends hand in his one last time as he looked up, fighting off the urge to break down as he saw the avengers, kneeling one by one. Steve looked back to Bucky, who's eyes had glossed over.
"Hey, hey Buck. Stay awake, I'm with you till the end of the line buddy. Just, stay awake for me, please."
The soldier knew it was too late, knew that his efforts were useless, but all he could do was rest his forehead on his friends lifeless body, begging for him to wake up.
