and we were dancing, dancing (like we're made of starlight)

Summary:

"Remember when we danced like this three years ago?"

or

the missing Deckerstar dance scene from 6x07.

Notes:

This fluff-filled oneshot was inspired by my dear friends Selkie and Lev, who were discussing how we were robbed of a Deckerstar dance scene at Maze/Eve's wedding. Ladies, this is dedicated to you. There is a little inside joke in the story too.

Title is taken from a lyric of "Starlight" by Taylor Swift.

All mistakes are mine and reviews/kudos are greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Will you relax? I didn’t think the Devil ever got nervous.”

Lucifer huffs incredulously and fiddles with his cufflinks. “I can assure you, urchin, the Devil does not get nervous.”

Trixie shoots him a look. “You’re doing that thing again. Just chill, she’ll be down in a minute. You look fine, by the way. If your jaw doesn’t hit the floor, hers certainly will.”

She turns her attention to her own outfit and makes some last-minute adjustments. He merely scoffs at the indignity of it all and decides to distract himself by ensuing his suit is proper, tugging at the coat and checking to see if there are any wrinkles. The trio are currently at Chloe’s house getting ready to depart for Maze and Eve’s wedding. Despite his past break-up with the latter, Lucifer harbours no ill feelings towards her. He is truly happy she has found someone who makes her smile.

He’s definitely not nervous. He just doesn’t know how much longer he can wait to see her in the dress.

She had picked it out herself and stubbornly refused to show him, even after he had actually pouted. “Keep up that moaning,” she had playfully warned him. “And you’ll be sleeping on the couch until the day of the wedding.”

That had promptly shut him up.

A noise from behind snaps him out of his reverie, and as he turns around he is temporarily rendered speechless.

Chloe stands before him. She is wearing a magnificent floral dress that accentuates her curves and, thanks to the V-neck, shows off the swell of her breasts as well as part of her collarbone. The short sleeves expose her toned biceps, and the dress stops about halfway between her knees and ankles. She sports a pair of high heel shoes that shimmer and sparkle in the light that filters from the ceiling.

She takes a step towards him, as he is still frozen in place, and slowly turns in a circle. He is completely mesmerized by her beauty, and as she turns back around to face him he swallows the lump that has suddenly formed in his throat. No matter what she is wearing – be it her normal work attire, an old LAPD shirt from her days at the police academy, or nothing at all – he thinks she looks divine.

Her cheeks tinge red and her eyes sheepishly turn downward to the floor at his stunned silence. Before she can respond, she feels his hand grasp hers. She looks up to him flashing that smile reserved only for her, then he gently twirls her around before pulling her into him.

Lucifer’s voice is hushed with wonder. “Chloe, you look breathtaking.”

Her brilliant eyes scan his tall form, drinking him in. While his black dress pants and plain white dress shirt are nothing extraordinary, it’s what he’s wearing over the latter that catches her attention. He is donning a velvety red tux that is deep in colour, buttoned up in the middle, and probably costs more than her salary. On his neck is an adorable black bowtie. All in all, he is strikingly handsome – but then again, she always thinks he is.

“Speak for yourself. You look like a delicious slice of red velvet cake.”

“Mm,” Lucifer’s tongue darts out to wet his lips, momentarily forgetting about the youngster in the room with them. “Maybe you can eat me later.”

“Okay, that’s just gross.” Said youngster wrinkles her nose in disgust, though her mother and step-father don’t miss the ghost of a smile on her lips. “If you two are all done with your lovey-dovey adult stuff, we should go.”

Chloe clears her throat awkwardly, cheeks now burning, and motions to the door. They grab everything they need and head out, though as she locks the door she steals a quick kiss from Lucifer. “Don’t worry,” she whispers so Trixie doesn’t hear, her voice holding a sultry note to it. “I plan to lick every inch of you.”

During the ceremony, Lucifer finds his gaze wandering to her. She has always looked ethereal to him, but something about this moment causes that infuriatingly annoying lump to form in his throat again. Sunlight casts her striking features in a golden aura, pooling on her skin as if it is envious of her beauty. Her oceanic eyes are focused on the two brides, but every now and then the corner of her lips pull up. He wonders if she is imagining the same thing as him. Sometimes she catches him staring at her, and his cheeks instantly burn red upon realizing he has been made. To soothe his embarrassment, she offers him a gentle smile.

He peers down at their joined hands. It has always marvelled him how his is larger than hers, but they fit together perfectly – almost as if some ancient force purposely moulded the ridges and curves of their hands so it would be this way. Her slender fingers wrap around his, and he runs the pad of his thumb over the joints of hers. Her touch ignites a fire on his skin, sending shockwaves through his entire form, and he knows he can easily get drunk off the sensation.

While Lucifer is lost in his own thoughts, Chloe isn’t faring much better. She can sense the heat of his gaze on her, causing her cheeks to flush. Even after all this time, the effect she has on him astounds her. Others – usually Ella or Linda – have remarked that he looks at her as if she is responsible for hanging the very stars in the heavens. She is amazed that someone as ordinary as her (though she knows he would protest this, because to him she is far from plain) can entrance someone as powerful as the Devil.

To be fair though, she has been drawn to him since the very beginning. Even despite his “Lucifer-ness”, when they first met there was something about him that intrigued her. Of course she had to destroy his multiple walls to figure it out, but then again she knows he is responsible for the rays of sunshine seeping through her own fortress.

She loves him. She loves him so much that it’s all-consuming. He is her entire world and she is constantly enthralled by him. She admires his strength, his resilience, and how he demands attention whenever he enters a room. He is far from the supposed “embodiment of evil” that others believe he is. To her, he is a man worthy of all that is good in the world. He is everything she has been searching for. While others seek their knight or prince, she has found her forever in the Devil. Sometimes she thinks their souls met lifetimes ago.

To top off all the celestial craziness that has enveloped her life, they are sitting only a few rows in front of their daughter. If she is honest with herself, she is still trying to wrap her mind around the whole child-from-the-future thing. That is a conversation for later, as right now she decides to focus on the beautiful ceremony unfolding before her.

As Maze and Eve kiss, so does she and Lucifer. They silently vow to each other that one day, they themselves will be standing at the altar.

Chloe is in a dancing mood. With her stomach now settled following a delicious meal, and the DJ just announcing that a romantic song is up next, she seeks out Lucifer who is pretty difficult to miss given his tall stature and gorgeous red suit. She immediately spots him at the head table, cheerfully chatting with the two brides.

“Hey!” She doesn’t miss how he eyes her as she strides up to him. “All right, so the babysitter’s going to take Trixie home. You want to hit the dance floor?”

A brilliant smile lights up his handsome features, and he extends a bent arm to her. “I thought you’d never ask.”

She accepts, wrapping her left hand around his forearm and giddiness spreading through her body like a warm flame. As they make their way to the dance area, he can’t help but continue to stare at her. “Have I told you today that you look absolutely ethereal?”

Chloe giggles. “Every single day.”

He lowers his arm and she releases her hold, but the separation lasts only a second as the limb wraps around her side, pulling her flush to him. She can feel his large hand splayed out on her lower back, and at the same time she raises her own hand to gently grip his bicep. His muscles twitch underneath his jacket at her touch. Their free hands connect, and they raise their arms up a little in a move that mirrors their first dance together.

A song erupts from the speakers, and Chloe instantly recognizes it as a beautiful acoustic cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”. She and Lucifer start gently swaying as the lyrics fill the room, and she spots Ella grabbing Carol’s hand.

I found a love for me,
Oh darling, just dive right in and follow my lead.
I found a girl, beautiful and sweet,
I never knew you were the someone waiting for me.

She sighs contently, feeling completely at home in Lucifer’s arms. Their foreheads are pressed together, noses touching, as they continue to sway back and forth. It feels as if they are the only ones here and the outside world ceases to exist.

“Remember when we danced like this three years ago?”

Chloe breaks out of her reverie by Lucifer’s soft voice, and she opens her eyes to look at him. “Mm, how could I forget? An entire evening to ourselves, me being in your arms, and the Devil shutting down his club for a human.”

Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms,
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song,
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath,
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight.

“Not just any human, my darling. The strongest, most incredible person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing – and I’ve met quite a few people in my lifetime.”

She rolls her eyes playfully. Oftentimes he will launch into a spiel about how he helped Shakespeare with a play or sat down with Beethoven to assist in composing a piece. But despite all that, despite all his meetings and adventures throughout history, he maintains that she, Chloe Decker, has changed his life.

“You looked just as gorgeous then as you do now,” he whispers in the small space between their lips. “There were so many things I wanted to tell you that night. I’m sorry I never did.”

We are still kids, but we're so in love
Fighting against all odds,
I know we'll be alright this time,
Darling, just hold my hand,
Be my girl, I'll be your man,
I see my future in your eyes.

Chloe kisses him gently, nearly getting lost in his taste. “We have time now.”

The lyrics, coupled with her words and very presence, gives him a jolt of inspiration. “I love you so much, Chloe. Sometimes I still can’t believe just how bloody lucky I am. When I first came to Los Angeles I was looking for something, and I drowned myself in parties and orgies searching for it. But then I met you, and suddenly the world didn’t seem so bleak anymore. I truly believe our spirits met eons ago. I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I am eternally grateful we found each other. I look at you, and I’m home. You are my guiding light, Chloe.  Thank you for having faith in me, for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself, for making me a better man, but most of all thank you for choosing me. For loving me.”

Chloe blinks, sending a tear she doesn’t realize she has shed falling down her cheek. He temporarily releases his hand and uses the pad of his thumb to swipe it away. “I love you too, Lucifer, with everything I have. No matter what happens, in any lifetime I will always choose you.”

Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms,
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song,
I have faith in what I see,
Now I know I have met an angel in person,
And she looks perfect,
I don't deserve this,
You look perfect tonight.

As the last lyrics ring out, he dips her. Her mind briefly flashes back to their prom dance when he performed the same move. She was disappointed they didn’t kiss then, but now she is determined to remedy that.

His words confirm to her that he is thinking the same thing. “I do believe I owe you a kiss, Detective.”

He leans in, filling the space between them, and presses his lips to hers. It is not hot and heavy by any means – that will happen later – but it is extremely tender and sets her heart ablaze. She knows he is a talented kisser (amongst other things) and she also knows she will never get tired of his taste lingering on her tongue. She wraps an arm around his neck, though she is fully aware he will never let her fall, and deepens the kiss a little. After a few moments they break apart for oxygen and he pulls her back up, though they remain close to each other.

Chloe squeezes his hand gently, amazed at the incredible man standing before her. Sometimes she has to pinch herself to remember that this is no dream, that she and Lucifer are really together. “I’m just glad you got what you needed.”

He smiles, remembering how he said those same words to her all those years ago. This time, however, things are so very different.

“My love,” he whispers as if what he wants to say is their little secret, “I have everything I need right here.”
