Work Text:
“I’m not going to ask again, Y/N. Did you or did you not eat my oatmeal?”
“You know what? Yeah, I did eat your stupid oatmeal!” You say even if it is not true, now trying to make your roommate, Obito, angry.
He is always on a bad mood when you both talk, ever since you moved in recently. He talks with Kakashi and Gai normally, but apparently, he has a problem with you in specific. Around you, he has always appeared closed off, always grumpy and avoiding speaking anything but the necessary to you.
“Don’t you know anything about boundaries?!” He proceeds with the discussion
“I was just provoking you, dummy! Have you ever seen me eat anything remotely healthy?”
Obito tosses the empty oat box in the trash and heads for his room, avoiding eye contact once again. His big physique disappears into the hallway, his messy jet-black hair nowhere in sight. Despite your attempts to get closer to your roommate by joking around, he still remains as closed off, although he wasn’t like that before.
Before you moved in you two were close friends, sharing many classes in your university. When the opportunity of moving in with him appeared you went for it: you two were great friends and you kind of had an interest in the guy. You two grew apart since then and now he seems like a stranger to you.
You always avoid admitting it to yourself due to your own pride, but Obito Uchiha is very attractive. People on campus might be a little… turned off by the scars covering half of his body, some even try to bully the guy. However, his demeanor, posture and gaze intrigues you, making you feel the intense urge to know more about him, get closer to him again.
He always has that tough look on his face, his eyes always focused on everything but you. This annoys you to an extreme. You know you are no supermodel, but you do think that you can pull off good-looking people occasionally. You might not want to admit it, but you have tried, hard, to seduce Obito. To no avail, since he seems to hate your guts.
This whole game has developed into an embarrassingly strong crush, where your heart races onto his sight, your stomach twists violently and you cannot control how red you become. He is destroying you with that attitude of his. Trying to annoy him has become your last resort of trying to take back some control over the situation.
After recomposing yourself, you get on with your day; attend your classes and heads to the bar with you friends. Sometime after midnight, you throw yourself into bed, hoping better things for the next day and trying to keep a certain someone from your thoughts.
~”~
It is about eleven in the morning when you wake up. You can barely open your eyes: your whole body is taken over by soreness and a heavy sensation, your limbs growing cold although you are rolled into a pile of blankets.
You drag yourself into the kitchen, trying to search for your other roommates and ask them for some aspirin or any medicine that might rid you of your pain. Kakashi and Gai are nowhere to be seen, probably already out for their road trip. Considering the efforts of walking to the pharmacy, you decide to just throw yourself in the living room’s couch and power through the pain this cold is causing you.
Still rolled into your pile of blankets and staring blankly into a wall, you do not notice Obito passing through you on his way to the kitchen. Once his presence is known to you, you try to hide yourself, not wanting him to see you in such state.
Without talking to you, he grabs an apple from the counter and heads back into his room, the sound from his TV echoing through the apartment. The only TV in the apartment, mind you, since the one on the living room broke ages ago when Gai kicked it by accident.
Obito’s door closes but suddenly clicks open again, his footsteps approaching the area you were laying in. You close your eyes briefly, bothered by the intense light coming from the nearby window. Once you open them again, you are met with Obito’s figure standing right in front of you.
“What’s wrong with you?” He asks, approaching you slowly but cautiously.
“Nothing.”
He ponders silently for a while, before responding again:
“It looks like a truck ran you over”
“Thanks”
“… seriously, what’s wrong with you, Y/N?”
“…I think I got… a cold.”
Out of nowhere, he places his rough palm into your forehead, checking for your temperature like your mom used to. His face slowly switches from the usually exaggerated scowl into one of worry.
“Yup, you have a fever. Did you take any medicine?”
“…Don’t have any…” you respond as best as you can, your symptoms overwhelming your usual shyness around him.
Obito disappears into his room briefly, returning with a small carton of cold meds. He fills a cup of water by the kitchen and hands the small pill to you. You barely rationalize his change in behavior, just taking the medicine and hiding into your cocoon of blankets again.
After a while, you drift off into a nap, letting the medicine take over and help you get better. You don’t even dream, time skips by in a flash. You’re awaken with the smell of food, specifically chicken. Once you’re able to open your eyes, all disheveled and sweaty from the fever, you’re met with what seems to be a fever dream.
Obito is once again in front of you, a small bowl of soup in his hand. You sit up, leaving room for your roommate to sit beside you, and so he does. Before you can say anything, he places a spoonful of soup near your mouth while avoiding eye contact.
You grab the spoon and eat it, rejoicing in the taste of his food. You always knew he was the best cook in the house since you ate his lunch accidentally before.
“Thanks Obito”
“It’s nothing, just eat it to get better, alright?”
He sits there patiently while you finish the rest of the soup, the warm liquid and the amazing taste of it already making you feel so much better. Once you’re done, he places the plate into the coffee table.
“So… I bet this ruined your road trip with the guys, huh?”
“…Well, actually, no. I wasn’t planning on coming with them.”
“Oh?”
“Why the surprise?” You provoke him out of habit.
“Well, aren’t you worried Kakashi might get with other girls?”
“…What? Why would I care about that?”
“…” Obito seems confused. His dark black eyes shine in thought, the cogs clearly turning in his head. “Aren’t you… you know…”
“What?”
“Into him and stuff?”
“Well, no.”
“Oh.”
Obito’s brows remain raised for a couple of seconds, the new information clearly confusing him. You are even more confused, what is this whole thing about? Why is he so interested in your love life all of the sudden? Obito Uchiha, of all people?
“Gai then?”
“No!” You weakly throw a pillow into his lap, trying to be playful.
“Okay… are you feeling better?”
“Confused, but a little better.”
Obito inches closer to you again, making your heart race as his eyelashes become more and more visible. He once again checks your fever, carefully placing his palm on your forehead.
“You’re still warm.”
“Oh, damn…”
“You should rest, watch something until it fully goes away.”
“Thanks, I’ll do that then.”
You get up from the sofa, heading to your room and thanking him for the soup. Before you can close the door to your room, Obito places his hand on the door.
“Hey, why don’t you use my TV? I’ll be in the living room, so you can rest there…”
His proposition sounds weird to you. He has been so closed off lately, but today he is inviting you to watch TV into his room. Despite your suspicions, you accept it, grappling into the opportunity to growing closer to him again.
Obito sets you up with one of his favorite sappy romantic movies and helps you settle into his bed. The whole room smells of his cologne, the one you have not smelled in a while due to his distance. A few minutes into the movie, you give up on trying concentrating, the whole situation overwhelming you.
On a whim, you go looking for Obito in the living room. He is sitting into the sofa, messing with his phone. He has that closed off look on his face. It melts away once he notices your presence, something you have not seen in a while.
“Hey, do you want to watch the movie with me?”
“…!?” He looks at you, his head tilted in confusion.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to, I-Imean, I’ll get back in there then…” You fumble around with your words.
“Oh! S-sure, okay.”
Obito follows you into his room. You both accommodate yourselves into his bed, sitting distant from each other at first.
As the movie goes on, you both inch closer until you are resting your head onto his shoulders. You hold your breath to the max, sicker by the sudden contact with your crush than by your actual sickness. After a while, he checks your temperature again, murmuring something about your getting better while keeping his hands on you. Slowly but surely, he leaves small caresses on your hair, playing with it with his fingers.
The credits roll and the both of you stay in awkward silence, not sure about what to say. You decide to get up and go get some sleep on your own room, thinking that Obito is probably already sick of your presence.
~”~
You take a brief shower and change into some fresh clothes, getting yourself ready for another nap. You are about to get into bed when you hear a knock by your door, opening it to find Obito standing there.
“How are you feeling now?”
“Much better, thanks for looking after me today, Obito”
“No need to thank me.” He scratches the back of his neck, acting awkward: “I just wanted to say that I’m sorry about how I… How I have been acting since you moved in.”
“It’s cool, don’t w-“
“Listen, Y/N, I have something to confess.”
“…”
You are left too stunned to speak.
“I… freaked out when you moved in. Konan had told me that you were moving in because you had a crush on someone from the apartment…”
“What?! She told you that?”
“I thought you were into Kakashi… I got… jealous.” His dark eyes now look directly into your, carving a hole into your skull and heart. “I’m sorry for being a jerk”
You are in shock. Did he just say he was jealous? In what sense? You try to calm yourself down, also trying to put the remaining effects from your cold aside. Utterly confused by everything Obito just said and too tired to make a better judgement of the situation, you decide to make a confession yourself:
“Well… Konan was right though. I do have some feelings for someone here.”
Obito seems to be thinking hard. At first, he seems confused. However, once he realizes what you meant, a big smile forms across his features, along with a gleam on his eyes.
He takes you into a big hug, proceeding to interlace his fingers with your hair, examining your features from up close. Finally, he surprises you once again with a searing kiss.
~”~
“I told you, of course you’re going to catch my cold if you kiss me.” You remind Obito as you place a wet towel over his forehead.
“I regret nothing.”
