Surviving Christmas with the Inlaws

Summary:

When Hiccup suggested they pretend to be dating to help make Jack's Aunt Carol shut up, they both assumed it would just be Jack's immediate family plus the one Aunt at his parents' place. But when they arrive to find Jack's entire family has shown up for the weekend they may have set themselves up for more than they could handle. But how bad could Christmas with Jack's entire family be?

Notes:

Slightly late Christmas gift for Toffyy. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter Text

“I’m sorry if... I… I know this is really weird.” Jack said.

Hiccup smiled, glancing over at Jack from the passenger seat. “It’s fine,” he said, resting his head against his hand with his elbow on the window sill. He glanced out the window, trying to force his face not to turn red. “Besides if it’ll shut your Aunt up… and I like your parents and sister, I’m used to them.”

“Mom may never forgive me.”

Hiccup chuckled. “She will. Pretending we’re dating is mild compared to some of the stunts we’ve pulled.”

Jack chuckled as well. “When I came into your room complaining that my Aunt was going to be at my parents place for the weekend I wasn’t expecting you to suggest pretending we were dating.”

Hiccup grinned. “It also kinda sounded like fun, spending the weekend with your family. Did your Aunt seriously bring some random girl to dinner last year to try and set you up?”

Jack sighed. “She did. Seems convinced that I just haven’t met the right one.”

Hiccup snickered to himself. “That’s gross.”

Jack nodded. “A little,” he said rubbing at the back of his neck with one hand, the other resting on the steering wheel. “Honestly she’s not a horrible person. She just…” he trailed off, seeming unsure what to say, “…doesn’t seem to think being gay is a real thing, which might be worse actually. When she first found out she told me to stop being silly and grow up.” He went silent for a few moments while staring out the window.

Hiccup watched Jack as the other seemed to zone out while talking and driving. Hiccup smiled and went back to watching the scenery go by as they got further and further into the countryside. “Well, hopefully having me there will help her with keeping her opinions to herself.”

Jack smiled as well. “Anyways, it’s just going to be her there. Other than my parents and Emma at least. It should be a pretty nice weekend.”

* * * *

A little over half an hour later the small car turned off of the minor road and onto what was more like a dirt path that made it’s way through white snowy fields and up to a small farm house. As they approached the house a trio of dogs came rushing out to greet the vehicle, walking along beside the car and barking as though trying to alert everyone inside that someone was here. Jack looked out his window at the very large and very fluffy dog that was walking alongside the car.

“That’s… odd,” He said with a frown.

Hiccup chuckled, “You weren’t expecting dogs?”

Jack glanced back at him. “I wasn’t expecting three,” he said as he stopped the car in front of the house. At the same time Jack’s Mother appeared at the top of the steps to the house.

“Jack!” she exclaimed as the two boys got out of the car. She ran up to the car and gave her Son a hug. “You won’t believe it!” she exclaimed. “Guess who made it for the weekend?”

A forced grin found its way onto his face. Oh gods, which of his relatives was Hiccup going to be subjected to? “Wh-Who?” Jack asked, trying to force enthusiasm.

“Everyone!” his Mother exclaimed as she turned back towards the house. She completely missed as Jack’s face fell and his eyes widened with dread.

He looked towards the house in time to see all of his Uncles file out wearing their winter clothing and his Aunts and Cousins at the doorway but staying inside. As his Mother made her way back towards the bottom of the steps Jack turned back to Hiccup, a look of near panic on his face. “I am so sorry.”
