Visiting Hours

Summary:

They may only have one hour together but Duncan can't help feeling nervous for Alejandro's visit, who knows what may happen between them before visiting hours are over...

I got caught up writing far too much again and posted slightly late (already midnight here!) but Day 1 of Aleduncan Week 2022 has arrived! This story is for the prompt 'first kiss' and almost certainly has many glaring errors about the Canadian prison system.

Work Text:

Duncan wasn’t sure why he was so nervous; Alejandro had been to visit him plenty of times before so today shouldn’t have been any different. He fidgeted in his seat and looked around at the other inmates who were sat waiting for their loved ones to arrive. When Duncan first ended up in prison his mom came to see him as soon as she could, after that he only had occasional visits from her or his brothers.

It wasn’t until three months into his sentence that Alejandro requested to see him. Duncan was pretty shocked at first. No one else from Total Drama had reached out the way Alejandro had, a few of his friends had been encouraging him to write letters but none of them had physically seen him since he’d been arrested. He’d heard nothing from Alejandro at all until the day the first visit was set.

The first visit was definitely awkward but slowly the two of them began to loosen up around each other again. They consoled each other while Duncan vented about his nerve-racking experience opening up to the prison psychologist and Alejandro lamented his short-lived relationship with Heather. Before they knew it their hour of bonding was up, and Alejandro was arranging another visit for the following month.

As the months passed Alejandro would alternate visits with Duncan’s family, always being sure to see him every four weeks and writing letters every day as well. It was a routine that helped keep Duncan grounded as he attempted to stay out of trouble, get his GED, and work through his issues with the psychologist’s help.

Duncan breathed a sigh of relief as Alejandro was let into the hall and made his way over to the table. Setting two Styrofoam cups of coffee down, Alejandro leaned over and gave Duncan a brief hug. His broad smile was infectious, and Duncan couldn’t help but grin back as the two settled into their seats.

“It’s so good to finally see you again! I got you a coffee from reception, I figured you’d need it after you almost fell asleep last time.” Alejandro chuckled as Duncan’s cheeks burned red, “Hey, it’s not my fault my cellmate sounded like a chainsaw with all his snoring! He got moved to one of the segregation units a few days after your last visit, the new guy I’m sharing with is actually pretty quiet.”

The two men sipped at their coffee and bantered together until there were only a few minutes left until Alejandro had to leave. Duncan winced as he looked at the clock, desperate to make their visit last as long as possible. Noticing his friend’s discomfort Alejandro gave Duncan’s hand a gentle squeeze, “Hey, you know I’m gonna write to you again as soon as I get home, time will fly by before my next visit. Even your sentence will be over in a few more months and I can take you out for some real coffee and we can talk as long as you want.”

Duncan felt butterflies in his stomach as Alejandro’s hand made contact with his, “Wow, it really is almost over… It’s gonna be so weird being back outside again, everyone’s gonna flip once they see me!” The pair chuckled and Duncan tried not to look sad as Alejandro moved his hand away again, “Yeah, Courtney’s already making me start a list of everything you’ll need once you move in-”

Both men froze as Alejandro’s words sunk in. “You… want me to move in with you?” Duncan tried to avoid letting his mouth fall open in shock while Alejandro stared at the bottom of his coffee cup, chuckling nervously, “I uh, I guess we just all assumed that you wouldn’t want to go back to your parent’s house and since we’ve grown so close…”

Alejandro stole a glance at Duncan as he tailed off, trying to figure out his friend’s reaction. Of course, he wouldn’t mention how their old castmates had been teasing him for months now about Alejandro’s blatant crush and how they’d all been egging him on to make a move on his best friend. Duncan was oddly silent, his mind racing as he struggled to process what was happening.

“Okay, visiting hours are now over. If you could make your way back to reception for a final search-” Both of them jolted in shock as the other pairs said their goodbyes and the wardens began ushering them out. Alejandro rose to his feet unsteadily, “Our visit’s over, I should-” Before either of them knew what was happening Duncan pulled Alejandro forward and their lips met in a brief but passionate kiss.

Pulling away quickly as one of the wardens ran over, Duncan laughed shakily, “See you next month roomie!” Alejandro had no time to reply as Duncan was led back to his cell, the two of them sharing a mischievous smile until the delinquent was no longer in view. Tuning out the warden’s scolding about physical contact Duncan played his first kiss over and over in his mind. It was a little rushed but like Alejandro said, his sentence would be over in a few months, then Duncan could kiss him as long as he wanted.
