Chapter Text
Sun and Moon have always been one and the same. They are two pieces of the whole. Yin and yang. Two sides of the same coin. Whatever other weird mushy metaphor you want to call it that’s what they are.
So when the Parts and Service Head Technician, Karl, comes into the daycare after closing while Sunny is working on cleaning up with a small group of techs following him, Sunny and Moon flinch and run to hide. It wasn’t like they didn’t know the techs were coming, the alert for maintenance had been in their internal queue since that morning. But neither half was too keen on maintenance.
“Get out of wherever you’re hiding now. I’m not playing games today.” Karl growls, hand tightening around the handle of the electric prod the staff are equipped with in case any animatronic becomes ‘unruly’.
“N-no thank you.” Sunny whimpers accidentally giving his spot away under some of the play equipment.
Marnie finds him quickly, “Come on Sunny, this isn’t gonna hurt, we gotta take a look at a few things.” She sighs, not quite meeting his eyes.
She’s hiding something.
I know, I don’t like it.
“P-please state wh- what the maintenance request is?” He tries.
“We don’t have time for this.” Karl had come up from behind and set the prongs of the prod against Sunny’s back at the lowest setting. It's like a really bad static shock, enough to make Sun yelp with a glitch to his voice box. “Move it, or we carry you powered off.” Karl snarls.
I hate that man so much, I’m going to shove spaghetti in his toolbox. Moon threatens from their shared mindspace.
We’ll be in even more trouble then…
Sun crawls out of his hiding spot, arms crossed as he hugs himself while being marched to the cylinder. Moon keeps listing off threats of pranks to pull against Karl the whole way, it makes Sun feel a little better but it’s still terrifying that a whole group of techs had come to the daycare. This is far more than a simple routine maintenance checkup, and both of them know it.
Sun is forced into the chair in the cylinder, arms and legs clamped down. Being built for movement and jumping and spinning around being latched down is absolutely the worst.
Stay strong Sun… I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.
I’m not going anywhere either, Moon. We’ll be fine. I-I’m sure we will…
Their shared HUD goes dark.
Moon wakes up first, surprisingly. Usually Sun was the one that would wake up after maintenance first and would normally get their shared code running. He focuses on getting their optics up and running, ignoring how spacious his head felt, maybe they just upgraded their RAM and storage, they could have just asked though.
Optics finally online he focuses next on their HUD and basic motor functions in their hands, arms, and upper torso. Code returning confirmations as everything comes online. Lower body is next then to start working through the checks, Moon idly wonders why Sun hasn’t woken up yet, usually one didn’t wake up for long without the other coming online shortly. They are a pair, they both start up at the same time, even if Moon is usually a tad slower on start up. He was made to handle nap time and lights on isn’t when he’s out, not his fault it made him drowsy.
Sun, are you there?
All Moon receives is static, which in and of itself isn’t something to panic about, but he’s starting to get a little antsy. The maintenance room he’s in provides little distraction. He idly looks through his message log for anything of interest and balks at the current date-time stamp.
How is it already Monday!? Didn’t we go in for maintenance on Friday night?!
He tries to prod Sun, still getting no response.
Sun?
Sunny?
The door to the maintenance room opens up, revealing the room is soundproof for some reason as something in a different room screeches loudly making him wince and curl up on the workbench he’s been sitting on, thankfully the technician that just walked in is Marnie. She looks surprised to see him awake and quickly shuts the door blocking out whatever shouting is happening outside. Moon hopes the screeching is Karl getting his hand bit by a bare endo.
“Hey Moon.” She greets casually, trying to cover her surprise. “Thought you’d be sleeping a while longer.”
“I just woke up. Sun has not yet woke up yet though, it is getting a little concerning.” He huffs, uncurling, idly shifting his fingers.
“Ah, well that’s not quite true.” She mutters, “I gotta check over some stuff, alright? Then we can get to the hard part.”
Moon narrows his eyes at her but lets her run the diagnostics she needs, idly attempting to get Sun up but none of his prods or messages to his AI brother are getting a response making him more and more agitated as Marnie works through the tests.
“You need to stop swinging your legs Moon, I need to hook up these wires.” She sighs at some point.
“Hm?” He comes back into focus on her, “Sorry.” He shrugs it off, “I am still not getting a response from Sun.”
“You won’t be. Lean forward for me?” Marnie grunts trying to reach the back his head.
Moon freezes, fans kicking into gear as he processes what Marnie just said. No wonder he wasn’t getting a response from his brother. “What do you mean I won’t be?” His eyes track her movement, not leaning forward for her to connect the cable. “Where is Sun?”
“Uh… W-well. I- I can say he- he’s fine… Probably.” She winces, gasping and scrambling back as Moon suddenly stands up and rips out the wires connected to his arm.
“Where. Is. Sun?” He growls. “What have you done with him? Why is he not with me?”
“I- Moon I have to finish the diagnostics-”
Suddenly the door slams open making Marnie shriek and Moon jump back with a hiss from his voice box. Until he inspects the newcomer more closely.
That’s their body… But he’s in their body so why is he looking at Sun?
“Moon!” Sun’s voice cries out from the voice box of the other animatronic before he’s tackled into a hug. Sun mimicking sobbing in his arms.
“S-sun?” His voice is barely above a whisper as he suddenly turns his attention on Marnie.
“Explain. Now.” He growls out, arms protectively wrapped around his brother.
“Corporate wanted more traffic in the daycare, they figured splitting you two up would- would be more efficient than- than adding a new animatronic o-or people.” She stutters out before scrambling to leave the room. Moon lets out a snarl as he watches her leave before focusing back on Sun.
Are- are you alright?
He doesn’t get a response, making him realize he has to actually vocalize his questions. “Sun… Sunny? Are you alright?”
Sun takes a moment before verbally responding as well, it seems both of them are having trouble adjusting. “I don’t like this change. Wh-why did they have to do it?” He whimpers, looking up at Moon.
“I- I don’t know… But- but we’re still together, we’re still together.” He tries to comfort Sun, but his own fears are growing.
“It- It’s not the same Moon! We- we can’t talk like before!” Sun’s eyes would be full of tears with how upset he sounds if he were human Moon thinks.
“No… We can’t. But we can figure something out… We can make them give us a connection.” He tries, holding Sun tightly.
“…They took us away from each other, Moon…”
“…They only separated our AI and body. They can’t separate us. I promise.” He says resting the top of his faceplate against Sun’s. “I promise Sun.”
“Moon…” Sun buries himself against Moon. Trying to curl as close as he can just like they used to do as merely code. It’s much harder with more limbs involved but the two just twist themselves up as much as they can. Moon watching the door just in case any technician dares to interrupt them.
Moon would make sure they wouldn’t be separated any further.
Even if he gets decommissioned trying.
