painting it all red

Summary:

Ghostface is back, Sidney takes care of business. And Gale comes to a realisation afterwards.

In which there is some murder and a first time.

Work Text:

Sometimes all the nightmares kept her awake in her bed.

A thud, and then the screeching noise of the alarm clock buzzed insistently suddenly piercing her ears.

6:00am on the dot.

Gale has tricked herself into believing it was the familiar sound of Dewey forgetting his keys and coming home to find them hanging on the hook.

Behind her closed eyes, there are tears forming.

Red, in whatever direction she turns.

The acrid aftertaste of blood.

She really missed him.

“Gale? Are you awake?”

Gale rolls onto one side of the hotel bed, and when she leisurely opens her eyes, her gaze instantly meets the other woman’s.

Sidney murmurs. “I-I’m sorry to disturb your sleep.”

Then clears her throat. “The chief wants to talk to you at the station.”

Gale lets out a frustrated grunt, silently glaring at the ceiling. “Tell her I said no interviews.”

A strange thing for her to say if ever there was one, but Sidney’s smile concealed her thoughts.

“Is this the part where I make a joke about how that never really was an option for me?” She said, tugging at her hair.

Gale threw back her head, her laugh echoing in the dark hotel. “Oh, fuck off!”

“Hey, Gale. You doing okay?” Sidney paused for an answer, but had to settle for her nod.

“You mentioned running, earlier.” She continues.

“Yes.” Gale barely got the word out at a volume above a whisper. “But not now.”

There was her out.

“But not now.” Sidney repeats, leaning in closer.

Gale could smell traces of her perfume, applied hours ago, before the day even started.

Sidney asks her, dead serious. “Do you want to find out who the killer is?

“Of course.”

"Then I'll go out and find supplies.” Sidney  said. "You don't need to come. Not after—”

Sidney rested her hands on her knees.

The trust that went into that gesture shocked her a bit, flinching unintentionally before shaking her head to answer.

“I promise you, we will get justice for Dewey. And I uh...just wanted you to know that you’re safe here.”

Gale quirked her brows in confusion.

“I wouldn’t stay here if I didn’t think it was safe.”

“Uh, thanks.” Sidney said, though her face gave away her nonchalant words.

“Coffee?” Gale asks, meaning it, not like usual.

“Better go before the breakfast crowds start flocking to Woodsboro.” Sidney says, sarcastically.

Gale groaned, and stretched widely, muscles cracking.

“Right then, I won’t be but a minute.”

Sidney turned around to face the door then back at Gale. "I'll wait."

Gale sleepily walked into the bathroom and turned the tap on the shower, immediately comforted by the water that surround her.

Watching the soap trickle into the drain, she felt the negativity of the day was scrubbed clean.

She wished she could stay in the water's cocoon forever but alas, the day awaited.

What can go wrong?

It wasn't long before Sidney and Gale were both outside of the alleged meeting place.

The house in front of them was almost falling apart and completely abandoned.

"Classy." Gale jokes, climbing out of the car and taking a deep breath.

"Gale? You ready?" Sidney strolled over, gently placing herself next to her.

“For this?” Gale shot her a puzzled look. “Never.”

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of other people joining them, six different teenagers with Sam and Richie at the lead.

Gale was immediately suspicious.

She looked over at Sidney to see if she was as alert as she was, but she was relaxed as another teenager came over and joined the others.

A lengthy pause ticked by and Gale watched the teens sway from out their circle.

Tara looked to Sam. “What’s the plan, sis?”

“Retrieve your inhaler then drive far away from here.” Sam replied.

"How are we gonna go about this anyways? Gettin' your inhaler back?"

Richie asked he moved his hand along Sam’s hip.

“No clue.” Sam offered, turning back to the gloomy looks on the others.

The tension was unsettled everywhere except Sidney and Gale who had just stepped up conveniently. “But I imagine they do.”

Sidney stood quiet, dwelling on the words.

Then spoke after a lengthy silence.

“How far are you willing to go? Willing to lose?”

The question caught them off guard, but Sam answered, “As far as I need. I will not live like this, if you can even call it that.”

Sidney moved a step forward. “Yeah, figured the Billy Loomis part in you would say that. Just let me point out that I didn’t and it ruined my life.”

Gale smirked, "Yet you always come back."

Sidney flexed her arms. "Cheaper than therapy."

Gale was sure that wasn't the reason, but didn't say anything as she followed Sidney to the house.

"So, you're telling me you have no idea what you're doing." Mindy deadpanned, eyebrows raised.

"Who are—?" Sidney began.

"Randy’s niece and Martha’s daughter.” Mindy finishes her thoughts.

"Oh." Sidney vacantly replied, reminiscing over days long past and names gone but  forgotten.

"The original." Amber mockingly cooed, as she entered the room. “Edgy, I like it.”

Gale lifts an eyebrow, but says nothing as she pulls out a notebook to jot down something.

"I see some things never change." Sidney replies, subtly amused.

Gale peers over at her. “You know me so well.”

Mindy hummed, and tossing a look between them. "Makes sense."

“I beg your pardon?” Gale asked.

Mindy winced. “I tend to overshare.” She hiccups. “When I’m tipsy.”

“You’re drunk?” Gale scoffed.

“Yep.” Mindy replied.

“I understand now why they’re called teen slasher films because they do stupid stuff like this when a killer is on the loose.” Gale said.

“Reckon so.” Mindy states, settling back into her chair.

Chad watched as Sidney lifted the back of her car trunk.

“What is the box for, then?”

Sidney sighs. “To aid the process and ensure some protection.”

A sound of the gun cocking froze each of them in place, stopping any attempt of communicating.

Sidney nods, pressing a gun against Gale’s hand.

As if to say, 'Let’s get on with it then!'.

Gale gripped the handle, staring at the gun.

Wes crossed his arms and snickered. “Woah. That’s a big gun. You sure you know how to use it?”

Gale brushed him off. “Fuck off.” She stretched out her fingers to pull the trigger for a test shot.

“Still, got it...”

Unsatisfied with the outcome, Sidney urged.

“Get closer, Gale.”

She watched as Gale stepped in a tiny bit and how an equally as small smile flickered briefly across her lips.

“Haven’t you learnt anything from previous killers?” Sidney chided and Gale rolled her eyes affectionately.

“Let’s go save the world…or whatever it was we were doing.”

And then, in that moment of fun, the door opened.

“What the hell?!” Gale exclaimed as Amber and Richie burst through the door dramatically.

And then she was, slumped over in a smouldering circle of agony and crying.

“Holy shit.” Tara said in disbelief.

“Gale!” She heard from Sidney just as her legs had taken her to the ground.

"No...no..." Mindy began to sound overwhelmed.

“It’s gonna be all right.” Gale doesn’t register what Sidney said at first because she’s looking at her own blood soaking her shirt.

“Sorry.”

Sidney has his hands on her shoulders and is shaking her gently. She turns to stare into her bright brown eyes.

“I’m going to drive you to the hospital.”

Sidney reaches up and brushes Gale’s hair back behind her ear and her fingertips stay, lingering, on her cheek.

Her brown eyes are locked on Gale’s and, if Gale was braver, she would move forward into the moment. But she isn’t and so she looks away.

“No. I’ll be fine. Just go get the fucker.”

“For Dewey.”

Robin doesn’t argue, just shifts on the grass.

They can get him, She thinks. They can stop him. They will.

For Dewey, Gale returns.

As if on cue, her phone lit up.

“Hello Sidney.”

“Never gets old.” Sidney answers the phone and looked around, combing her hair back and attempting to cover her fear.

In that moment of distraction, it happened. The lights suddenly switched on and the door shut behind her.

The killer says, with immense satisfaction.

“I may have hoped, but I never would have guessed that Sidney Prescott would show up.”

Sidney looks around. She’s in the quiet part of the house.

Away from the crowd and dancing music where it is a little more quiet.

None of them even imagined what lurked in the darkness.

Sidney pulled the phone from her ear and looked up the stairway. “Uh huh.”

“Wait—” The killer does not like that one little bit.

“I think you’re boring.” Sidney adds and hung up the phone.

A flash of the closet door revealed the shape of someone appearing next to her.

The silent killer, with a long black cape, white mask, and the glint of a knife in his hands.

“Here comes more clowning...”  Sidney sighed, still bored.

The killer made a cut-like gesture close to his neck.

“You’ll regret that.”

“Right…” Sidney points the gun and aims for the killer’s head.

“I am... here to kill you.”

The killer says it once, but louder this time, and Sidney can tell he's getting desperate.

“Did you?”

Tilting up again, Sidney was still for a moment.

“But I’m not sure if you can handle it.”

A dry snarl caused the killer’s jaw to flare, his eyes shooting arrows down. “Don’t.”

Beneath the lenses of her mask, Amber’s eyes went as hard as ice.

With frightening speed, Sidney began descending the stairs. “In your dreams.”

“Aren’t you going to play along?” The killer pressed, and Sidney rolled her eyes.

“I’m tired of all this.” Sidney said, and shrugged.

The killer unable to maintain her composure with her for any longer, rips off her mask.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Amber sneered. “No more playing.”

The corners of Amber’s mouth slightly curve up in an awkward creepy little smile. Richie returns her smile with his own creepy smile.

“I’m sorry it had to end like this.” Richie whispered, and Sam wanted to scream.

"— let the games begin.” Amber announced, eagerly.

“Run!” Mindy punctuated.

The music stopped, and a frozen silence established itself in the room - a rare occasion.

“Get them.” Amber demanded.

Richie realised they had failed. For whatever reason, this plan that Amber had made failed.

"Did you not know?” Richie asked, holding his knife to Sam’s neck. “I did this for you… for us.”

“Go to hell.” Sam exclaimed, sprinting away.

As the others ran off, Sidney couldn’t help but keep looking at Amber.

“Sidney Prescott.” Amber hummed, looking her up and down.

They made their way through the side of the house, and further into the interior of the kitchen.

“It is a pleasure.” Amber replied quickly, before raising her knife.

Sidney definitely regretted coming on this trip.

BANG!

And shoots like a mad woman until she runs out of bullets.

As Sidney starts to reload, Amber switches to a different tactic.

“Oh shit!”

Sidney barely made it out of the way before Amber grabbed her and slammed her over the sink.

“Fuck!” Sidney yelped as she struck her head again and everything went black for a moment

Blood was flooding her mouth the harder she fought the control and forced herself to stop in order to stay conscious.

Damn it. Sidney knew that Amber’s nod from earlier meant nothing good.

And a minute later Richie pulls Gale into a sitting position on a kitchen chair, with ropes holding her in place.

“Er.” Gale says, jolting from her stupor.

“Really?!” Sidney is taken aback.

It would be hard to fight in her current condition. Did she even have any more bullets?

When she looked down, Sidney saw that she had been stripped of her gun- so there was a very small chance that she could use it.

Sometimes, you just had to improvise.

Another look at Gale who had stretched her limbs then nodded toward Sidney.

There it was.

Sidney merely lifts a brow in return, but Gale sees interest in her eyes as she rocks back on the chair.

Heads are beginning to poke back up at her.

Steeling herself, Gale started rocking left and right to try and gain momentum.

“Hey— cut it out!”

Gale jumps, and freezes.

Sidney was actually very proud of her for how well she was handling her gunshot wound.

“Glad we can sort that out.”

“Me too.”

A few moments, and Sidney had managed to prop herself up to a standing position, facing Amber.

The younger woman swirls back to look at her; but isn’t fast enough.

Jab, parry, kick. Jump, swerve, punch. Amber falters before regaining her balance, and Sidney is grinning as she wastes no time in throwing Amber to the ground before pulling Gale free.

Sidney make a grab for the gun, pressing the safety and hands it to Gale.

Gale’s eyes are sparkling. “If you insist.”

There’s no verbal answer. Sidney just smiles.

The choice was obvious.

From the day Dewey met his demise, it had to be Gale.

Grasping the handle of the gun, Gale jerks around and keeps the gun steady in her hands as she aims it at - Amber.

“I - I - I didn’t know.” Amber tries to plead. “Richie made me do it. Please.”

For a moment, Gale stopped and she wondered if it was guilt in Amber’s eyes. It had better not be. She was killing people for this sick game, and now she had the balls to act guilty? Unacceptable

A pause. Then Sidney is back beside her, arms crossed as a frown grows on her face.

“Explain yourself.” Gale forces her voice to be severe.

“I don’t know why you’re so upset, Gale,” Ambers jests. “Dewey died while staring at your photo when you were calling.”

The mention of Dewey’s name made her hands tighten.

“Fuck you.” Gale enunciates.

Glass crashing. A ping of a bullet on her arm.

Amber collapses back into the kitchen sink.

She screams as she’s engulfed in flames.

Dead silence, again. Everyone stares - Amber not included.

Gale can feel the heat of it, and winces.

There’s chattering in her ear from the roar of violent fire ripping through the empty kitchen  and it makes her ears thud - a few long, striding steps from Sidney, and Gale clings to her shoulders, burying her face in his neck for protection from the heat - and then everything is still.

“Be careful.” Gale spoke first, noting how Sidney studied the burnt, black mottled skin.

Sidney nodded in understanding. “They always come back.”

Before they realized it, Richie jolted up right with an animalistic growl.

Sidney felt Gale tense, then shift to the side of her.

The gun made a sizzle before she felt it run out, leaving smoke in its wake.

Wrapping a hand around her in a protective stance, Sidney swore. “Fuck.”

The man was moving about to the kitchen before he stepped towards her with a knife in his hand.

Damn, this wasn’t going the way she wanted it.

With a snarl Richie drew back with the knife and makes a reckless jab to her arm.

A trickle of blood escapes her, warm and sticky, like glue.

“No, Sidney—” Gale screamed.

Sidney murmurs a prayer to some higher being to get Gale out alive.

She had a hard time believing in one that allowed kids to be murdered.

But she had to try, for Gale.

So instead she settles for, “Do your worst.”

For a moment all was still. The man stared his dead-eyed stare, mouth snapping.

Then she heard a sound whoosh from the end of the hall.

Richie went to say something — which quickly turned into a grimace

From the way the man rotated through the air, it was the echo of a gunshot, unused and gritty.

Well, that was unexpected.

Pausing for an instant to look back to see Tara standing by the doorway.

“Good shot.”

A mute Tara nodded at her.

Sam comes up to gingerly pry her fingers from the gun.

Relentlessly, the girl pressed on the trigger.

One...

Two…

Three…

It connected each time with a spray of blood.

All Tara could do was blink dumbly.

Richie dropped like a doll, his jaw hanging on by threads.

Dead.

This time he didn’t come back.

Sidney sighs and looks around, then becomes a flurry of movement.

As always, Gale meets her halfway.

“Is it over?” Gale whispers into Sidney’s ear.

Sidney… has no real answer for that.

No matter what she attempts

Instead she inhales sharply, gaze tearing away from the reporter.

Her eyes glint. “I hope so.”

That gains her a sad smile.

Because it's Gale and she doesn't expect answers.

Sam had taken Amber’s phone, had typed 9-1-1 in with shaky fingers.

“Yes, hello?” Her breath catches in her throat. “I would like to report a murder.”

Then, as suddenly as the chaos started, the house is quiet.

Next to her Gale relaxed and righted her jacket.

“Did we just get saved by some goddamn teenager?”

At those words, Sidney stepped forward, picking up something that Gale couldn’t see.

And for what, exactly?

To pick up a glove.
A right-handed glove.

The police ought to be there soon, to clean it up.

Sidney lingers all the same, standing close to Gale until she’s the last one in the ambulance.

Well, one of the last.

“I can't believe it’s over.” Sam says as she watches the paramedics load Amber’s covered body into the ambulance.

The two girls are outside the house stunned by the events that occurred.

As they watched two bulky men wheel the gurney out the house with Mindy strapped to the top, Misty said, “You sure know how to throw a party.”

Tara choked and sputtered on the unexpected attempt at humour. “You were stabbed!”

Sam trailed quietly behind them.

Gale scans the scene with experienced eyes.

She does this for a living, filling the silence, making sense out of the senseless.

Gale jerks her head towards the crowd.

“You should talk to her.”

Sidney follows her gaze, too curious.

“I got it.”

Then she jogs back to the two women, Gale looms over her, a bogarting shadow.

“Hey Sidney.” Samantha says, upon seeing her approach.

“Hello, girls.” Sidney say pleasantly, coming to a stop between them with a grin. “Sam. Tara.”

“Hello.” Tara returns, much more enthusiastically.

“I’m glad it worked out for you two.” Sidney said aloud.

“Thanks, Sidney” Sam says weakly.

A bright bruise is blossoming across her pale skin.

“Do you have ten minutes?” Sidney questions.

“Of course.” Sam mutters.

Sidney lifts an arm and a finger, as if to reply.

They take a few brisk steps down the hill, utterly away from anyone’s ears.

Sam is troubled.

“You don’t have to worry…” Sidney says fondly.

Wait. Sidney doesn’t want her to worry.

Sam narrowed her eyes. “Not sure what you mean.”

“—You will find your peace.” Sidney finishes.

A laugh, just as she wanted. Swells into the last bit of her wounded soul, and Sam smiles.

“Okay.”

A final farewell is exchanged as Sam folds her arms and watches as Sidney pads over softly to the ambulance.

Sidney reaches for her hand and when she makes contact Gale looks up at her.

"I'm so sorry Gale." Sidney says, talking about Dewey.

Gale squeezed it tightly.  “Yeah, me too.”

Somewhere a policeman is barking into the radio, alerting the hospital of an incoming trauma.

Sidney sat on the hard hospital mattress watching Gale sleep.

She had managed to pull through. Of course.

The surgery had successfully patched up the abdominal wounds inflicted by Amber.

Gale stirred awake. Her eyes land on Sidney sitting next to her on the empty cot, a hardcover copy of The Woodsboro Murder in her hands.

“What time is it?” Gale croaks, interrupting Sidney’s thoughts, her throat dry and achy.

“Just past eight.” Sidney replies, putting the book down in her lap.

Then, in an unusual display of concern: “How are you feeling?”

“Amazing. Like I’ve been shot.” Gale jokes weakly, looking down at the bandages wrapped on her stomach and trying to work out which of her many tubes went into where.

Gale lets out something sounding like a cough. “Don’t visiting hours end at six?”

“I’m very persuasive.” Sidney replies, by way of explanation, and Gale’s sure she saw her smile.

“—you should’ve been a reporter.”

“Not quite.” Sidney replied with a low chuckle.

Gale ever-perceptive, changes her tone almost immediately.

“That’s my book.” Gale says, nodding towards her lap.

Sidney’s eyes were comically wide. “Oh” She ran her fingers against the title — ‘The Woodsboro Murders by Gale Weathers’

She explains further. “I found it in the gift shop downstairs.”

Gale laughs softly. “You gave me my first big break.”

Sidney mutters. “Yeah, and look where that got you.”

Her smile drops, the atmosphere suddenly stifling.

And settles on the dreaded answer of nostalgia, the same answer that underlies most of her subconscious, filling her sleepless nights and daydreams all the same.

Gale frowns at the implication that Sidney might blame himself for what happened.

Then she snorts. “I remember you slapping me.”

Sidney knows Gale is deflecting the topic, but her body is aching from a combination of her lack of rest, being shot, and the cold seeping into her bones.

But she can’t help but smile, too, even if it feels a little too rough around the edges, a little too weary.

“—yeah, well you deserved it.”

The smile on Gale’s face only grows with the silence that follows.

Until the phlegm in her throat became too much and it turned into a coughing fit.

“I should call the nurse.” Sidney said as the monitors beeped.

“Don’t.” Gale whispered gripping the edge of Sidney’s shirt.

Sidney turned around, as Gale parted her lips slightly in a state of panic. “Stay with me until I fall asleep. I’ll be fine. I’m-”

"Gale, look at me." Sidney asked, her fingers finding that perfect spot behind Gale’s ear and rubbing gently. "You were shot and just need to be checked over, I promise I will not leave."

The reporter searched her eyes for a moment, their eyes locking.

For a moment, it was as though they were alone.

“—yeah, okay.”

Sidney leans back to press the flashing light to page the nurse’s desk.

The nurse finally arrives, and taps on the door quietly. “Come in.” Gale says softly.

The nurse interrupted her with a "Mrs. Gale Weathers?”

Gale assured her with a nod.

"Sounds like you successfully made it through survey.”

The nurse said, looking at her chart.

Gale did not miss a beat, “When can I leave and go back to work?”

The nurse responded, simply. “It’s expected that you can be discharged by tomorrow afternoon.”

“And what about working?” Gale inquired.

The nurse slides the chart back into place.

“Keep it easy and simple. Small increments a little each day should be fine.”

Gale hums in agreement.

“Anything else?” Sidney asked then looks away sheepishly as the nurse acknowledged  her for the first time with a raised brow.

“Don't do anything strenuous for a week or two.”

The nurse smiled at her and Sidney flushed scarlet red.

Gale turned her lips upwards. “That’ll be all, thank you.”

The nurse murmurs upon walking out - telling her the meal would be coming from the hospital cafeteria.

Her stomach growled at the thought of food.

Gale jostles Sidney with an elbow and says, “Well that was something-”

“Less talking, more sleeping!” Sidney calls back.

Then pours ice water from the pitcher into a foam cup as quickly as she can and holds it out once it is full.

“Ugh.” Gale tiredly reaches for the offered cup.

“You’re no fun, Sid.” She sighs at the coolness of the water.

Even as she lets herself be led back into the bed without any argument and Sidney’s hand stays entwined with her own.

“Sleep well, Gale.”

The fight dissipates altogether from her shoulders at the gentle call of her name.

“Sidney.” Gale breathes, like a prayer answered.

In an instant, Sidney appears at her side.

“Everything okay?”

“It’s rude you know, to leave before I can thank you properly for saving my life, Sid.” Gale says quietly.

Sidney lets out a laugh and a smile curves over her lips.

“Oh?”

It fascinates her that warmth can exist without touch.

Gale drapes her arms delicately over Sidney’s still form, and brushes the lightest kiss across Sidney’s lips.

A fair repayment for saving her life.

Thank you.

“Goodnight Sidney.” Gale says wistfully and grins victoriously.

Sidney blinks once, twice, but the words never come.

Her face remains stoic as she jumps to her feet.

“I…I-” she falters.

The door closes behind her and leaves Gale in a boundless dark.

*The Next Day*

The nurse held the door open for Sidney, who had a bag in each hand, Gale’s crutches under her arm, and helped Gale navigate the wheelchair that she gets to use.

They ventured down the hospital ramp to the car.

A shrill twinkling fills echoes in the air as Sidney retrieves her keys and tries to unlock the car door.

“I got it.” Gale tells her softly.

Sidney stiffens when she feels Gale’s fingers brush against her knuckles.

“Um, yeah, thanks.” Sidney closes her eyes as the crisp fall breeze picks up.

“No problem.” Gale offered.

Sidney holds the door open to the passenger seat, Gale deftly getting herself into it with practiced ease.

Gale paid no attention to the doctor — who folded the chair then removed the wheels and placed them in the back seat.

Then she looked up at Sidney and tossed her a look.

“So, what's next?” Gale said once Sidney had started the engine.

Sidney stared pensively at the now disassembled device.

“I’m tired of running.” She says as she moves the car into gear.

“When are you going to go back?” Gale asks Sidney, choosing to ignore her beating heart.

Sidney tightens her grip on the wheel.

“Soon.”

"I’ll miss you when you leave." Gale says, after finishing with examining her face in the rearview mirror.

“Gale?”

Sidney looks at her in a sideways glance and Gale lifted her head. “Yes, Sid?”

“You can come home to California with me if you want.”Sidney answers quietly.

Gale hums understandingly. "I do miss them, Tatum and Riley.”

There was a pause. Sidney seemed to be mulling something over.

"I'm incapable of commitment, I can't cook worth a damn and I'm a single mum to two…" Sidney said with finality.

There: honest without admitting too much. She hoped.

"Bullshit!" Gale said, louder than she meant to.

"Huh?"

Sidney looked at her, a muted curiosity in her eyes.

Gale continues. “You've never had any problem with commitment that I can see - not with coming when you’re needed and fixing the problems for people you just met.”

“That’s an interesting thing to call a murder—” Sidney pauses and mimics her fingers on one hand. “—problems”

“Just being honest.” Gale said with a smirk.

The words weighed heavily on Sidney  but she still knew what her response would be.

Sidney asked as she presses on the gas pedal. “Do all your nights involve getting nightmares then just staying awake for the rest of it?”

“Just about.” Gale agreed, leaning back into the seat.

“It sounds scary and wonderful at the same time.”

Sidney admits, resting her hands over the dash.

“That's seemed to be our life from the start though.” Gale teases with a smile and Sidney smiles back. “—you’re a pro.”

“I think I might like it.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

The realization came like a stab to her heart, an ache blooming in her chest.

I… love you, Gale Weathers.

“—Ready to go?” Sidney asks her and lingered for a few moments more, at the stop sign.

A second car passed them on the right.

“Yes. But maybe stop at a drugstore so I can get some sun tan lotion.” Gale sighs, looking down at her pale skin.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been to California.”

Then Sidney relaxed a bit. “Good thinking.”

Sidney had been working so hard to prove herself to everyone, but there was no need with Gale.

Gale keeps her eyes closed and stares up at the leaky corner of the roof and listens to Sidney as she reads with Gale’s own words: Hi, my name is Gale Weathers and I…

Gale could still feel the sting of the slap.

The sleepy remnants of sunlight dripping through the window start to fade as Gale loses herself in the same sentences, over and over until Sidney’s picked apart every last word.

A hint of a smile in her voice.

She was smiling a lot these days.

The reporter circled her arms around Sidney’s waist from behind and kissed her on the back of her neck.

“Morning, you.”

Sidney’s brown eyes bored into her, a look of love colouring her face.

“Good morning, yourself.”

"Continue reading, if you like," Gale grins, with a saucy cock of her head towards the book in question.

"This is the best part." She murmured.

Sidney shook her head. “You still grousing me about that little slap?”

“I believe that there was two.”

Gale laughs and Sidney’s fingertips tingle.

Sidney stares. “Let's see if I can't round you up some coffee.”

Gale raises her eyebrows. “Why Sidney, with that kind of talk, I'd almost think you were trying to seduce me.”

“Told you.” Sidney smirks at Gale. “I can’t cook but I make a mean cup of joe.”

With a groan, Gale stretches along the bed.

“If I must drink that poison from the keurig…”

Laughs rang out, Sidney nudges her knee.

“Your keurig. You insisted on it.”

“Well definitely beats the cheap stuff.” Gale spoke softly, close enough that Sidney felt the breath on her ear.

She eased, but still clung to Gale’s arm as they rose.

And could feel her whole body heating up, “Fair enough, Weathers. I’ll take your word for it.”

Gale gently touches the opening in Sidney’s robe and looks at Sidney under her lashes. “I know you don’t like coffee, ‘—miss I’m a tea only type’ of gal.”

Sidney gently kisses Gale’s lips.

"Anyway. Forget the coffee and come back to bed.”

There's already a wetness forming in her underwear, and then Gale throws her back down on the bed with a flourish.

Other things Gale would definitely be good with - her mouth.

Sidney whimpered softly.

Then the reporter bent over her and that was it for Sidney.

But the knife never comes.
