Su-per-Tu-na!

Summary:

Jungkook keeps calling his Seokjin hyung to sing Super Tuna with all he's got. When the younger calls him past midnight however, Seokjin feels that something is wrong even before answering the call. Jungkook may have more doubts than what he shows his hyung.

OR

Jungkook likes to bother his hyung, and Seokjin lets him do his thing because well... Who would say no to Jeon Jungkook?

Notes:

Hi! So this is the first thing I ever post here, and it was inspired by this tweet from @/seokjinhie

English is not my first language but I tried my best. I felt like it was good enough to be shared but if you have some good advice to help me improve my writing in English, please let me know in the comments!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

For the third time that day, Seokjin's phone started vibrating nonstop, a name and a face appearing on the screen. Seokjin didn't need to look at the name to know who it was. In the up-right corner of his screen, the time read 3pm, yet this person had already called him twice earlier that day.

Seokjin sighed but answered it anyway, turning the speakers on to avoid having to keep his phone to his ear. He also didn't want to endure what the younger was planning. This way, he could resume his game on his computer at the same time as well. He always knew what was going to happen long before the other's voice actually started coming through the phone, but he still answered his phone every day, never missing a call.

Maybe he liked it more than he said he did.

"Tuna! Ha! Tuna! Su-per-tu-na!"

Seokjin let out some sighs to show his annoyance but didn't say anything, letting Jungkook sing his song until the end. The younger hung up right after his performance and without having said anything more than the lyrics he had vigorously sung. As always, he didn’t let Seokjin react and left as soon as he was finished.

Jungkook had started to call his hyung with the only purpose of singing him his song some days after it had been released, when he saw how much Super Tuna was gaining attention and enthusiasm from both social medias and armys. Since then, Seokjin could sometimes receive up to five calls a day, always with the same words being screamed through the speakers.

Jungkook must have been really bored the day he had called him five times only to sing with his loudest voice.

The first time Jungkook had ever called him, Seokjin had hung up before he could get to the end of the song. The tips of his ears had turned bright red as soon as he had understood what the younger was doing.

The second time, Seokjin had hesitated to pick up his phone, but had ended up doing it. He had grumbled and asked for the other to stop all throughout the call, but had let Jungkook sing all the song anyway. The younger had completely ignored his words.

And now… He would lie if he said that he was not embarrassed anymore, and the slight red on his ears would prove him wrong anyway, but it was a habit he couldn't see himself putting an end to.

***

Sure, it had become a common thing for Seokjin to have Jungkook calling him at any time of the day, but when he saw his friend's contact coming up on his phone at almost 1am, he knew something was wrong.

It was weird that Jungkook was calling him now only to try to annoy him. Of course, he was teasing him a lot on his song lately, but Jungkook had always respected his sleep by making sure he only called him at hours he thought the other would be awake. 1am was not one of those hours.

It was unusual for Seokjin to be awake at this time of the night as well, but he had got a song idea and had wanted to write everything he had on his mind down in hopes of showing it to Namjoon the next day. He wanted to ask for advice, maybe they could even work something out together on this new project.

Being more worried and confused than tired, Seokjin answered the call and immediately brought his phone up to his ear.

"Jungkook? You okay?"

For some seconds not a word was shared, then Jungkook started singing the usual lyrics as he would always do. Except this time, his voice was much quieter, almost a whisper, and Seokjin thought it was because he didn't want to disturb the silence of the night.

Unlike every other time, Jungkook did not hung up after having whispered the final lyrics. Seokjin took that as an opportunity, breaking the new silence that had taken place between them.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

"I thought you wouldn't answer," Jungkook said after some time. He sounded unsure, his voice barely louder than when he was singing.

"Why?"

"Thought you would be sleeping."

"Oh," Seokjin was starting to understand where the other was going. "Then why did you call me?"

"Don't know. Felt like it. Does it bother you?"

"Of course not, I wouldn't have picked up if it did." Seokjin answered without thinking. He wanted to let Jungkook get where he wanted to at his own pace, but he was also confused as why the younger sounded so insecure. He usually looked so confident; it was unsettling.

"No, I mean… All these times, when I call you, doesn't it end up bothering you?" Jungkook finally let out. And oh, here it was, what was really on Jungkook's mind.

"Why do you think I keep answering?" Seokjin asked as a habit. He regretted them almost as soon as the words left his mouth. Now was not the time to ask Jungkook anything. He was the one who had to answer.

"Hyung," Jungkook whined, "don't answer to my question by another one…"

"Same answer as before, I would not keep answering again and again if it bothered me, Kook."

"Oh…" Jungkook sounded relieved now.

"What?"

"I don't know, I thought you were doing it to be nice."

Seokjin didn't answer right away, thinking of how to word what he had in mind.

"You know, even if I complain a lot, even with everything I say, it still feels good for my ego seeing that you seem to enjoy my song that much."

The silence followed his words, but Seokjin didn't mind. It was the kind of silence that followed an open-hearted conversation, where the untold had been unveiled and the souls had been appeased. This silence felt good to both Seokjin and Jungkook and they enjoyed it for quite a long time.

When Seokjin opened his mouth again, he realised that Jungkook had fallen asleep. He could hear his slow breathing, and the younger hadn't answered him when Seokjin had suggested that they should hang up and go to sleep.

Well, he had not waited for him.

So, Seokjin hung up with a tired smile on his face, putting his phone on the nightstand next to his bed. He found somehow the motivation to put on pyjamas and brush his teeth, slow and messy moves while doing so. He lost consciousness as soon as he put the covers on his body.

The next day, sometime around 11am, Seokjin got a call. He answered it without hesitating and for once, sang along with Jungkook until the end. The tips of his ears were bright red again, but it was worth it. Jungkook would regularly cut off his performance because he couldn't hold back his laughter.

It was absolutely perfect.
