Work Text:
The sounds of gunshots and explosions rang throughout City One, though they were slightly muted from inside the entrance hall of the Bastion. The group of four had been lucky enough to evade most of the fighting outside, but being holed up in here was far from ideal. Royal was deep in the throes of grief, Elro was still bleeding, Mina was blaming herself, and Robin… Robin couldn’t stop herself from shaking. Everything she had done, everything they had worked towards… had it really all been for nothing? Was the world going to end tonight with blood and Ivory staining her hands? People lay dead in the streets, Mother herself had been hollowed out by an enormous Ivory tree and those who hadn’t been caught in the fighting wept for her loss. All of this was ultimately their fault.
This wasn’t what Robin had wanted.
More than anything, Robin wanted to sit down and cry along with Royal. To console Mina and Elro and let them know that everything was going to be okay despite the circumstances. But she was so emotionally spent that she couldn’t even bring herself to shed tears. Robin paced back and forth as Mina lamented her actions, barely listening at this point. She kept her eyes glued to the blue and white tile flooring, trying her best to avoid looking at Elro and his blood-soaked clothes. She only stopped when a stray bullet pierced through a large window. The fluffy white cat that had been sitting on the couch next to Mina darted underneath the seat to hide. Mina didn’t think twice about ducking under there along with it. The broken glass wasn’t doing much to muffle the sounds from outside anymore. This was too much.
“R-Robin?” Mina’s voice squeaked from her impromptu hiding spot. “What is it? Where are you going?”
Robin knew that if she turned around now, she’d lose her resolve. Taking a deep, shaky breath, she unholstered her stun gun and walked towards the stairs at the end of the hall.
She didn’t want to die in here.
