Work Text:
“No, no, you don’t understand. I need pie.” The store clerk looks at you annoyed. You’ve been discussing with him for the last fifteen minutes about pastries. You need pie, but he keeps offering cake. “You know what, forget it.” You take your bags and make a beeline for the door. You’ll just have to check another bakery. On a normal day, you wouldn’t be so adamant about buying a pie, but today’s not a normal day.
This week has been chaos. Hunting a wendigo in the forest took more time than anticipated. When you returned this afternoon, you were drenched in sweat and grime. After all, living in the woods for two days didn’t allow you to shower. You had been the first one to claim the motel’s bathroom, shortly followed by Sam. It was until Dean had gone inside that you checked the date on your phone; January 24th. Dean Winchester’s friggin’ birthday. And you had forgotten. In your and Sam’s defense, the wendigo’s hunt had been time-consuming.
Nevertheless, as soon as you realized the date, you and Sam had scrambled out of the motel in hopes to find something suitable to make it up. Sam had gone for the beers and hamburgers, your task was the pie. And you refuse to fail Dean. Luckily for you, you find another bakery a few blocks away that does sell pie.
You enter the motel’s parking lot and see Sam approaching from the other side. “Find everything?” you ask.
“Yeah, you?” You nod in reassurance. “Let’s head in.”
When you open the door, you find a clean Dean Winchester surfing the channels. He looks nice and calm, like he hadn’t just gotten rid of a monster. He looks up, his eyes instantly find yours and smiles. You remember momentarily his pleasant hugs on cold nights. Your heart pounds in your chest, you can’t help but blurt out: “Happy Birthday!!”
Dean looks startled, like he wasn’t expecting anything, maybe he wasn’t. Sam looks at you annoyed, “we need to take out the food first” he murmurs. Yes, you definitely weren’t smooth.
You blush and take out the pie from the bag, walking towards Dean. Sam sighs and leaves the food on the table. Once you reach the birthday boy, you put a candle on top of the pie and ask Sam to light it up. He does as you asked, his bitch-face never wavering. However, once you start singing ‘Happy birthday’ off-tune, a smile appears on his face, and sings along. Dean is now looking at you as if he’s containing his laughter, yet there’s warmth in his eyes.
You finish the song and extend the pie towards him, “c’mon, make a wish!” Dean chuckles. You briefly expect him to reject the idea.
“Well, there’s not much I can ask for,” he says, “I mean, I have everything I want right here.” He gazes into your eyes as he says those words. A shiver runs down your spine. He smiles as if he knows the effect he has on you. He winks at you and blows out the candle.
