“You’re pacing” Amelia stated as she walked into the OBs office in search of a lunch buddy

“Correct” Carina replied

“Why are you pacing your office?”

“Mayas on a 5 alarm” Carina huffed out applying pressure to her belly

“Oh, I’m sure she’ll be-“ Amelia attempted to console the Italian when she cut her off

“And I’m in active labour” Carina added nonchalantly

“What the hell Carina”

“It’s fine, it’s non emergent” Carina waved off the neurosurgeons panic

“You’re in labour” Amelia clarified

“Si”

“And your wife’s at a fire” Amelia added

“I’d rather not think about that right now Amelia, hence the pacing” Carina bit back before she had to steady herself on the back of a chair

“You should get yourself admitted” Amelia stated

“Already have” Carina replied

“So why are you still in here” Amelia laughed

“Because it’s more comfortable than an empty hospital room right now” Carina said

“Does Maya know you’re in labour” Amelia asked

“What do you think?”

“Yep right stupid question” Amelia answered herself

“Do you need me to call anyone else?”

“Who else, on this continent, could possibly need informing” Carina smirked

“Right yeah, again stupid question”

“Si”

“What about your friend err what’s her name, brunette, Italian, hot, doctor you refuse to introduce me to” Amelia started again

“Gabriella?” Carina questioned

“Yes Gabriella, where’s she?“ Amelia’s face lit up as Carina told her her name

“Again not on this continent” Carina laughed

“Ah… Maya has parents right?” Amelia stated

“Yeah she has a mom” Carina smiled

“Do you want me to call her?”

“I think Maya should be the one to call her, it’s a little complex” Carina replied bracing herself again

“Okay, anything else you need” Amelia asked

“Besides my wife” Carina replied

“I’m sure we could get word to her, they’d probably let her go”

“She was the first company on scene, as Captain she’ll be the incident command. She won’t want to leave” Carina waved off the suggestion knowing how much Maya needed to focus on her job right now

“Even for her wife and babies?“

“Maybe ‘won’t want’ is a little strong but I know my wife if she left and something happened that she wasn’t able to control she’d feel guilty. And then she’d feel guilty for the happiness of us whilst someone somewhere was living their worst nightmare”

“Gotcha, so we wait” Amelia smiled

“Si, we wait” Carina replied bracing herself for yet another contraction

“I’m not sure how much longer we can wait Carina” Amelia replied rubbing the OBs back

“Me either” Carina replied through gritted teeth

“Here, sit on this ball” Amelia pushed the exercise ball over to Carina before crouching down behind her and beginning to massage her lower back

“How are you so good at that” Carina whispered in relief

“I’ve have some practice, and I was taught by the best”

“Who’s the best?” Carina questioned

“Dr Addison Montgomery, she’s my brothers first wife. Although she’s more of a sister than just someone who married my brother. She’s a better sister than my actual sisters” Amelia rambled

“Ah, I know Addison from the research and conference circuit, pretty impressive stuff” Carina nodded

“Yeah, like I said, she’s the best” Amelia smiled “…so”

“So?”

“What are their names?” Amelia asked playfully

“Who’s names?” Carina responded playing dumb

“The dogs at the firehouse, who do you think?” Amelia replied sarcastically

“Ah Americans and their sarcasm. 1. The fire house doesn’t actually have a dog, and 2. I’m not telling you” Carina laughed

“Do you know the sex?” Amelia asked

“Si”

“What are they?” The neurosurgeon continued to push

“Nope” Carina shook her head laughing

“What?”

“I’m not telling you, Maya and I we decided to keep it secret just between us” Carina replied

“I bet Wilson knows” Amelia grumbled

“Wilson only knows because she’s my OB” Carina reasoned

“Of course because if you could, you’d deliver them yourself” Amelia replied sarcastically

“You say that as if you wouldn’t have performed your brain surgery yourself” Carina raised her eyes looking back at her friend

“Touché Dr DeLuca” Amelia grinned

“Do you know their names?” Amelia asked

“Si, we do” Carina nodded

“Can I know?” Amelia asked quickly

“No” Carina laughed

“Carina” Amelia whined

“Amelia” Carina replied matching the neurosurgeons tone

“Is one of them Amelia? I’d be honoured to be the namesake of a future Olympian” Amelia stated playfully pushing her knuckles deeper into Carinas lower back elevating the pain

“No it’s not Amelia” Carina laughed

“Is it’s Andrew? Or how do you say in Italian Andrea” Amelia asked with her best Italian accent

“Umm” Carina stuttered

“Oh my God it is, you’re having a boy” Amelia replied excitedly

“Amelia” Carina started

“Little baby Andrea, that’s so cute” the neurosurgeons continued to gush

“Amelia” Carina tried again

“You know your brother was a great surgeon and an even better human being, and I’m not just saying that because he dated two of my sisters. The world will be a better place knowing another Andrea DeLuca will be running around…” Amelia admitted

“…he’d be so proud of you-“ Amelia went to ramble again when Carina cut her off

“Amelia, I would love to talk about my stupid baby brother with you” the Italian laughed

“…I really would but right now I think I need to move to a room and get out of my scrubs”

“Right yeah sorry I ramble when I’m nervous, which is strange because I don’t often get nervous you know being the narcissistic neurosurgeon I am-“ Amelia started to ramble again

“Amelia!” Carina shouted

“Hospital room, got it let’s go” Amelia helped Carina into her feet and walked her to the delivery room

Carina changed into a hospital gown with the help of the neurosurgeon as Wilson was paged for the delivery. News made its was to Bailey who subsequently ran into the stations aid car in the ambulance bay

“Benjamin!” Miranda shouted as she exited the ER

“My darling wife” Ben held his arms own that were quickly swatted away

“Don’t give me that, where’s Bishop?”

“She’s still at the scene, things are whining down the fires pretty much out we just have overhaul to do” Ben replied

Okay I need you to get back there, get her and bring her here” Miranda insisted

“Why?” Ben asked

“Carinas in labour and she isn’t missing the birth of her twins for overhaul and investigation” Miranda replied sternly

“On it” Ben replied kissing his wife quickly and shutting the back doors of the ambulance to head back to the scene

“Cap” Ben radioed Maya on his way back

“What is it Warren”

“We’re on our way back to the scene I need you to hand off responsibilities and jump in the back as soon as we pull up” Ben instructed

“What! Why?” Maya questioned

“It’s Carina”

“What’s happened?”

“Nothing bad I promise, it’s just” Ben started

“What is it Warren?” Maya pressed

“She’s in labour”

“What? She’s 38 weeks” Maya huffed in a panic

“It’s twins Maya, your wife’s the best OB/GYN in the city you must have known it was a possibility” Ben reasoned

“I did yeah but I didn’t think- okay I’m handing off to Gibson, how far away are you?” Maya composed herself catching sight of Jack over by a hose

“3 minutes out”

“Okay”

“Jack!” Maya shouted urgently across the scene

“Hey you okay?” Jack came running quickly

“No I need you to take over” Maya replied taking off her helmet and throwing it in the back of the engine

“Maya?”

“Carinas in labour Warrens on his way back from the hospital to take me there” Maya replied giving Jack the tablet and unbuckling her coat

“That’s so exciting”

“It is” Maya nodded still with a panicked look on her face

“Do you want to tell your face that?” Jack chuckled

“I’m petrified, what if I get it all wrong” Maya admitted

“You’re going to be an amazing mom Maya, don’t over think it” Jack placed his hands on her shoulders

“Okay” Maya nodded

“You’re going to be great Maya” Jack pulled her into a hug as Warren pulled up in the aidcar

Maya quickly got in and headed to the hospital, her thoughts running at 100 miles an hour as every single worse case scenario ran through her head

“Where the hell have you been?” Amelia asked as Maya flew through the door

“Sorry it was a 5 alarm” Maya replied as she was met with a grateful smile of relief from her wife

“You stink of smoke” Amelia observed

“I had to go in” Maya shrugged

“You didn’t think to shower first?” Amelia asked

“Showering wasn’t the first thing on my mind Amelia” Maya but back angrily

“Maybe it should have been” Amelia rolled her eyes

“Maya” Carina yelled through gritted teeth

“Yeah”

“Get here” Carina replied pulling away from Amelia reaching for her wife

“I’m here, I’m here I’m sorry, you okay?” Maya asked holding Carinas hand kissing her head

“Am I okay?” Carina laughed as another contraction took over

“Right yeah” Maya replied

“It hurts” Carina whispered

“Sit up” Maya replied having an idea

“Cosa?”

“Just sit up” Maya climbed behind her wife making herself comfortable “…okay now lean back”

“Dio mio you smell so bad, but that feels so good” Carina sighed in relief

“Firefighter Barbie to the rescue” Amelia smiled

“Okay time for you to leave” Carina replied

“What! Why?” Amelia whined

“Because you can’t give me the same pain relief Maya can” Carina laughed

“We’re actually past that Carina if you’re ready you can start pushing” Wilson cut in as she was met with a wide smile from the Italian

“Okay, on the next contraction I want you to push. Amelia scarper” Jo added as Amelia quickly left the room

The next contraction came and Carina did as she was instructed

“You’re doing so good, keep going” Maya coached

“Oh what do you know?” Carina bit back

“Okay, I’ll be quiet” Maya laughed back

“How do I sit there and tell patients to do this” Carina questioned talking to herself

“And again Carina” Jo instructed

“Talk to me Maya” Carina bit out

“You just told me to shut up” Maya replied

“Maya” Carina threw her head back hitting the blondes shoulder

“Sorry, you’re so strong Carina you can do this” Maya whispered

“Okay last one, this is going to be the toughest but you know that already”

“Now” Jo instructed as Carina gave one last push to deliver the baby “and relax” Jo smiled grabbing the baby and passing him off to the nurse

Carina panted heavily throwing her head back again to Mayas shoulder who tried her best to push the hair that had stuck to her forehead from the sweat

“here he is, your baby boy” Jo placed the baby on Carinas chest, both women instantly in awe of the baby

“Hey, hey, hey look you did it” Maya whispered through happy tears kissing Carinas temples as she traced her fingers across the baby boys back “…you’re incredible, I love you” Carina didn’t have the energy to respond she simply hummed and pushed her weight back into Maya cuddling into the crook of her neck

The two women spent 10 minutes admiring their new baby boy before Carina let out another uncomfortable grunt as contractions started again.

The nurse assisting Jo quickly removed the baby boy from Carinas chest to place him in a crib

“Okay Carina on the next one, you know what to do”

Another 7 minutes later and the baby girl was delivered

“Here’s your daughter” Jo smiled as she placed the baby onto Carinas chest who instantly started screaming

“Maya, give the baby to Maya” Carina replied stroking her daughters back

“What?” Maya was caught startled by the statement

“Hmmhmm” Carina nodded lifting herself up so Maya could stand up again

“Wait” Maya pulled off her SFD crew shirt so she was sat in her sports bra Carina just watching her

“What? I know about skin to skin” Maya replied as Carina give out an exhausted laugh

The screaming baby girl was placed into Mayas arms and as soon as Maya started talking she calmed down cuddling into her mothers chest

“She knows me” Maya smiled feeling the tears now stream down her face

“Of course she does bambina, you’ve spoke to her everyday for the last 9 months”

Maya settled in the chair next to the bed with her daughter sleeping peacefully in her arms

“Oh I’m so in trouble with you” Maya whispered as she looked down at her perfect daughter

Maya spent the next 10 minutes infatuated with her twins as they underwent several new born checks and Carina delivered the placentas.

Soon enough each baby was latched to Carina feeding and Maya could see the obvious relief on her wife’s face as they did

The women spent the next few hours swapping which baby they held when a knock on the door shook them from their bubble

“Hey, hey” Andy and Vic quietly knocked on the door and made their way into the room

“Your bags” Andy smiled holding up a change of clothes for Maya and Carina as well as the baby bag that had been in Mayas car when Carina went into labour

“Hi” Maya smiled “thank you”

“Ciao” Carina smiled at the same time

“Look at you, all cuddled up with your baby” Vic gushed seeing a new side to Maya she’d never seen before

“This is Eleora, and Carina is holding Andrea” Maya replied finally looking away from her daughter to greet her friends properly

“Andrea” Andy welled up hearing the name

“Not after you” Maya teased

“Andrea” Andy smiled again choosing to ignore Mayas comment walking over to Carina “…can I?”

“Sure” Carina nodded as Andy quickly moved to the sink to wash her hands

“Hey little Andy…” Andy gushed as she lifted the baby boy into his arms

“Nope, there is to be no Americanising of his name. It’s Andrea Tomas DeLuca-Bishop” Maya cut her off quickly

“That’s such an adorable name” Vic added looking over Andy’s shoulder at the baby’s big brown eyes

“Okay okay, Hola pequeño Andrea” Andy bounced the boy up and down completely besotted with the boy “…I forgot how small they are when they’re only a few hours old” the Latina added smiling at a very tired looking Carina

“Lucas is only 5 months old” Vic added

“Yeah and compared to my new little sobrino he’s a heffalump…” Andy joked at a high pitch as she was met with three confused faces

“…sorry there’s been a lot of Winnie the Pooh in our house, I can’t wait to get back to work next month” Andy let out a long sigh met with quiet laughter

“Can I have that one?” Vic asked pointing at Maya

“Not if you ask like that you can’t” Maya laughed back

“Please may I hold baby Eleora?” Vic asked pouting her bottom lip

“Of course you can, wash your hands” Carina answered for Maya before giving her wife a look telling her to relax and be kind

“Come to auntie Vic…” Vic squeaked as Maya gave her the baby

“…hi baby, wow you’re cute, and I’m not just saying that some babies are ugly” Vic spoke to the baby

“Victoria” Carina laughed hearing the firefighters comment

“What! They are, some babies have all screwed up faces, but not Eleora…” Vic defended herself when she felt the baby squirm in her arms as she woke up

“…hi, woah Maya she has your eyes they’re all big and blue and Bishop-y” Vic revealed

“So what’s Eleoras middle name?” Andy asked

“Victoria? Is it Victoria” Vic asked

“No, it’s not” Maya chuckled

“Darn because Eleora Victoria would be super cute” Vic replied

“Well it’s Eleora Valentina” Maya informed her friends

“Even your name is adorable…” Vic turned back to the baby “…Is it weird to wish you were a baby”

“Victoria when was the last time you slept?” Carina asked hearing the conversation she’d started with her new born daughter

“I don’t know what day was it before the 5 alarm” Vic asked Maya who just shook her head and laughed

“Okay, let’s leave the DeLuca-Bishop family to relax and get you to bed” Andy spoke as she handed Andrea back to Carina

“Vic return the baby” Andy nudged the reluctant brunette

“Can’t I keep her, look I think she likes me” Vic smiled

“Vic” Andy pressed

“Here take your baby back” Vic sighed walking over to Maya who took Eleora and handed her to Carina so she could say goodbye properly

“Thank you, you know you’re welcome to drop by anytime” Carina smiled

“Awesome” Vic cheered wanting as many baby cuddles as possible

“Bye baby Andrea, I’ll be back soon with a new little best friend for you, his names Lucas and he can be pretty loud but I promise you he’s harmless” Andy stroked over the babies heads one last time before grabbing her things to head home

“Thank you for coming, and thank you for not bringing the whole station with you” Carina smiled

“Hey, I’m honoured that you let us meet them before anyone else” Vic replied

Maya walked the women to the elevator reiterating Carinas thanks for not bringing the entire station with them

“Remind me again why does she get a baby named after her?” Vic asked

“He’s not named after her, he’s named after Carinas brother. You know the one she loved more than anyone in the world. The one who was murdered” Maya replied with a knowing look

“Yeah you know that’s not what she thinks” Vic replied seeing the Cheshire Cat smile on Andy’s face

“I know” Maya sighed

“Have you spoke to your mom?” Andy asked

“Yeah she’s going to come by tomorrow, she’s in Portland visiting her sister I told her not to rush. She sounded so excited” Maya smiled the same smile she had been wearing since Andrea was first placed on Carinas chest

“I’m so happy for you Mai, this certainly isn’t the life either of us ever pictured in the academy” Andy replied

“No it certainly isn’t, but I do believe it’s better” Maya laughed

“Oh definitely” Andy agreed catching the yawn Vic let out next to her “…okay sleepy head let’s go”

“Bye mommy” Vic waved as she stepped into the elevator

“Bye” Maya waved back laughing

The blonde waited for the elevator doors to close before she made her way back to Carinas room stopping at the door to admire the scene before her

Carina had one baby nestled in her arm and the other lay on her chest as she whispered to them in Italian. Carina noticed Maya stood at the door looking up to offer her wife a smile

“We’re moms” Maya smiled shyly

“We are, now come over here and sit” Carina replied beckoning Maya to join her on the bed

“What? No there’s not enough room” Maya protested as she sat back in the chair she’d previously sat in

“Yes there is, now come and sit with your wife and children” Carina insisted as she managed to shuffled along the bed to make room

“My wife and children, wow I never thought I’d ever hear that sentence” Maya huffed with a smile pushing her hair out her face “I’m so proud of you, I love you so much”

“I love you too, you make me so happy Maya I can’t even begin to explain” Carina replied reaching her hand out to Maya

“Then don’t, just kiss me” Maya smiled leaning over

“Okay” Carina smiled

“They’re so perfect” Maya replied

“They are” Carina agreed

“Are you okay?” Maya asked hearing the break in her wife’s voice

“I just really miss my Mamma, and there’s nothing that can be done to bring her back, but she would have loved them, and she would have been the most amazing Nonna. I wish she was here, to teach me things that only she could teach me and I know, I know your mom is so excited and I know she’ll be the most amazing grandmother and my papa well that’s a take each day as it comes situation but it’s just, for me it’s-“ Carina cried as she rest her head on Mayas shoulder

“It’s not the same, I get it. This is all you’ve ever wanted and you’d always imagined sharing it with your mom…” Maya replied wrapping one arm around Carinas shoulder and stroking her other hand over Eleoras back

“…And I agree my mom will be an amazing grandmother, and I know she’s not your mom and she’ll never replace your mom but sometimes I think she likes you more than she likes me, she sees you as her daughter too Carina and she’d do anything for you, for us” Maya chuckled hearing the small giggles of her wife

“Thank you” Carina lifted her head to look at Maya

“What for?” Maya asked

“For everything, for our marriage, for being you, for giving me a family and a home. Ti amo” Carina kissed Maya

“I love you too, I couldn’t imagine my life without you” Maya smiled back

“I don’t want to let them go, but I need you to hold me properly” Carina sobbed

“Okay, let me put them in the crib and we can just watch them” Maya smiled as she sat up and lifted the twins one by one into the crib next to the bed

“…oh crap” Maya mumbled

“What, what’s wrong?” Carina panicked

“Nothing, nothings wrong I’ve just realised I’m still in my turnout pants” Maya smiled seeing Carina laugh

“My office is right down the hall, there’s a pair of your sweatpants in there if you want to go grab them” Carina replied “…or what did Andy bring?”

“Ummm, leggings I think I’d rather sweatpants” Maya laughed

“… I’ll be quick” Maya replied as she headed to the door

“You better prove how you got that gold medal Mrs DeLuca-Bishop” Carina teased

“Of course” Maya chimed back as she quickly ran to Carinas office retrieved the sweatpants and ran back again “…see super speedy”

“Never a single doubt, now get changed and come hold me” Carina replied holding her arms up

Maya quickly got changed and joined Carina on the bed. The blonde instantly felt the tensions of the day leave her body as she realised she was sat with her wife in her arms and her children sleeping soundly in the cribs next to her

“I’m sorry it wasn’t the birth you had planned” Maya whispered as she settled back in behind Carina holding her tight

“What are you talking about?” Carina uttered in confusion

“I know that you wanted to test your own theories and I wanted to be here, for the whole thing and I wasn’t and I left you alone-“ Maya started

“I wasn’t alone bambina” Carina interjected shaking her head

“You know what I mean. I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner” Maya sighed

“You got here in plenty of time” Carina assured her wife

“I-“

“Stop apologising, you got here as fast as you could, I could have sent for you sooner but I know how important your job is-“ Carina cut her off shuffling so she could comfortably look back at Maya

“Car-“

“Stop, let me speak” Carina smiled

“…It doesn’t matter how it happened all that matters is that we have two happy babies who are healthy and safe. Which they are, they’re perfect, you’re perfect” Carina craned her neck to kiss Mayas cheek

“We’re perfect” Maya whispered believing her wife’s words

“I love you” Carina replied

“I love you… so so much” Maya replied

“You should try and sleep” Maya whispered running her fingers through Carinas hair

“So should you” Carina replied

“You’re bossy when you’re overtired” Maya joked feeling Carina giggle against her chest

“Get used to it” Carina mumbled back

Carina fell asleep relatively quickly shortly followed by Maya. The women were woken up a few hours later by the twins demanding to be fed, Carina fed the twins whilst Maya watched on in awe amazed by her wife

Maya didn’t sleep again that night instead she lay there holding her wife rubbing her back assuring she got the sleep she needed

8am came round and as the twins demanded more food, Jo came by for a regular check up. Jo was happy with Carinas recovery and had all intent on discharging her later today should everything be okay with the twins

“Knock, knock” Katherine Bishop stood in the doorway

“Hey mom, come meet your grand babies”

“Wow I really am a grandmother” the women smiled together

“Si, you really are” Carina smiled signalling for Maya to her hand her mom a baby.

“This is Eleora Valentina” Maya handed the baby to her mother “..and that’s Andrea Tomas”

“Andrea, after your brother, that’s such a sweet sentiment” Katherine spoke before turning her attention to the baby in her arms

“hey Eleora, I’m your nanna. She’s gorgeous, they both are. I’m so proud of you Maya, and you Carina you’re going to make the perfect family.” Maya began to well up at her mother’s words, finally believing that she could actually be good at the whole being a mom thing

“Carina, how are you feeling sweetheart?” Katherine taking a seat next to the bed

“I’m good, tired but apart from that” Carina smiled

“Do you know how long you’ll have to spend here?” Katherine asked completely infatuated with the small baby in her arms

“Hopefully they’ll let me go home later today, as long as the babies pass the car seat test. It’s great having the whole 24hr care thing with the nurses but I just want to sleep in my own bed and be in our own space” Carina returned

“There’s nothing like that first night at home. Well you both know where I am if you ever need an extra pair of hands” Katherine offered catching the brief shocked look on her daughters face

“Maya, are you okay?” Katherine asked with a chuckle

“I- err, yeah I guess it’s all just so- I never imagined this, any of it and now I couldn’t imagine not having it” Maya admitted shyly

“You’re going to be an amazing mom Maya, just don’t forget to ask for help” Katherine smiled just then her phone rang

“I’m sorry, I need to get this” Katherine passed the baby back to Maya before she excused herself to answer her phone

“I wonder what that’s all about” Maya whispered as she sat next to Carina on the bed

“Maybe she has a date, or a secret boyfriend” Carina joked

“Please don’t joke, that’s my mom” Maya groaned

“Hey it’s a totally normal thing to seek companionship later in life-“

“Please stop” Maya held up her hand as she was met with giggles from Carina

“Maya” Carina whispered

“Yeah?” Maya looked up at her wife who had a wide grin on her face

“Dammi un baci… per favore” Carina grinned

“Come here, Mrs DeLuca-Bishop” Maya angled herself to look back at Carina before pulling her into a kiss

“Sorry about that-“ Katherine’s apologised as she came back in

“Who was it?” Maya asked

“No one important” Katherine replied as Maya narrowed her eyes when a wave of fear washed over her

“Was it- him?” Maya asked

“No, no sweetie it wasn’t him. I promise” Katherine assured her daughter placing a comforting hand on her cheek

“…now, can I have a hold of my grandson?” Katherine asked with a warm smile “…I only have about 20 minutes before I have to go meet the girls from book club and I want to be able to show them lots of pictures of my new favourite DeLuca-Bishops”

“Of course” Carina smiled handing over a sleepy Andrea

True to her word Katherine left 20 minutes later leaving the new family to have some more time together. The women were visited throughout the day by various doctors and surgeons who all wanted their turn to meet the new babies

Jo finally made an appearance around 4pm discharging Carina and the babies. Maya and Carina dressed the twins in their individual going home onesies and sat them in their car seats. Maya then helped Carina into a pair of sweats and her station 19 hoodie ready to go home

“You all ready?” Maya asked as she helped Carina into the wheelchair the Italian had reluctantly agreed to

“Si, let’s take our babies home” Carina smiled

“Let’s do that”

“Wait” Carina grabbed Mayas wrist before she could pick up the two car seats

“What, are you okay?” Maya panicked

“Kiss me first” Carina replied

Maya dropped back to crouch in front of her wife and steadied herself on Carinas knees before leaning in and kiss her wife passionately

“Better?” Maya asked playfully

“Si, better” Carina nodded “Andiamo a casa”

The two made their way out to the car, Maya carried both car seats whilst an orderly pushed Carinas wheelchair much to her char-grain as she was adamant she could walk but hospital protocol over ruled her

Maya drove them home as carefully as she could, for the first time in her life she found herself adhering to speed limits and stopping at every yellow light.

“Tesoro can you run to the window and see if mommy’s car is back yet?” Carina asked as she managed to make her way to sit down

Andrea ran to the window to sit on the window seat and stand watch for Mayas car

“She’s not here” Andrea shook his head looking back at Carina noticing she was in significant pain

“…You stay there and tell me when you see mommy’s car”

“Mama are you hurt? Is the bambina okay” Andrea asked furrowing his brow and pouting his lip

“The bambina will be fine tesoro” Carina smiled widely hoping it would transfer to her son

“12 minutes, okay, that’s fine, I can cope with that…” Carina noted as she timed her contractions “…where the hell is Maya” Carina groaned as she threw her head back into the pillow

Carina lay there for a minute breathing through the contraction as Andrea kept his eyes glued on the road still waiting for his moms car

“Mommy’s home” Andrea jumped up finally seeing Maya pull into the drive way and help Eleora out the car

“Grazie a dio” Carina hummed under her breath

“…bene tesoro can you make it downstairs and go and ask her to come up here per favore, don’t run, I don’t want you to fall and hurt yourself” Carina smiled

“Bene Mama” Andrea climbed down from the window and climbed onto the bed to kiss Carinas cheek “Ti amo”

“Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy!” Andrea yelled as he made it down the last few steps and jumped onto Mayas back who was crouched down taking off her daughters shoes

“Hi bubs are you okay?” Maya laughed as she felt herself almost topple over at the force of her son

“I’m good, mama isn’t” Andrea replied

“What?” Maya asked trying to hide the panic on her face

“She said she’s fine but I don’t think she’s fine” Andrea replied holding onto Mayas neck

“Where is she?“ Maya asked

“Your bedroom”

“Okay, you two stay here. Be good” Maya stood Andrea next to Eleora and wiggled her finger at the pair of them making them giggle

Maya made her way up the stairs calling for Carina multiple times receiving no reply

“Maya” Carina breathed out shakily and Maya knew instantly what was going on

“Carina, you should have called me” Maya sighed despite having been on shift, she would have got someone to cover if needed

“It’s fine, they’ve only just started to intensify” Carina waved off the concern

“Do I have time to call my mom or shall we put the kids in daycare?” Maya asked

“Your moms out of town” Carina replied

“Oh I forgot about that” Maya whispered

“I’ll call Andy”

“Be quick” Carina added

Maya fumbled in her pocket looking for her phone and pulling up Andy’s caller ID

“She’s in labour can you take the twins?” Maya asked

“Lucas!” Eleora ran over to Andy’s son and hugged him

“Hola princesa” Andy smiled ruffling the long blonde waves pulled into a high ponytail accented with a white bow with red fire trucks on

“Hola Tia, mommy says we’re having a sleepover” Eleora hugged the Latina wrapping her arms tight around Andy’s legs

“Si” Eleora nodded against Andy’s legs

“Well go get her then” Maya smiled watching as Eleora ran around the living room in search of the toy

“Mama you sure you’re okay?” Andrea asked as he climbed up the back of the couch to hold onto Carinas face

“Si certo tesoro” Carina smiled wrapping her arm around Andreas wait to steady him

“I love you” Andrea kissed Carina cheek

“I love you” Carina replied

“I love you more” Andrea smiled

“Not today you don’t” Carina smiled back kissing Andreas forehead encouraging him to get down

“Bye bye mommy” Andrea hugged Maya before walking towards Andy

“What no I love you mommy?” Maya asked feigning hurt

“I love you lots and lots too” Maya laughed holding her son

“Okay DeLuca-Bishops let’s go, leave mommy and mama in peace” Andy interrupted the moment seeing Carina had braced herself on the back of the sofa clearly feeling another contraction

“Thank you so much” Maya replied walking Andy to the door

“Of course”

“Good luck, I guess when I next see you there’ll be another Tiny Italian Olympian” Andy smiled

“I guess so” Maya smiled back

“Mami come on” Lucas called from the front lawn where all three kids had sat waiting for Andy

“I’ve been summoned” Andy raised her eyebrows

“See you later”

“See you later” Maya waved them off when she felt her wife’s arms encircle her waist

“I thought they’d never leave” Carina whispered in Mayas ear

“Carina, we need to go to the hospital” Maya giggled feeling the woman’s grip tighten

2 hours later and the women were still waiting on their newest arrival, Carina had settled into the bed whilst Maya sat on the chairs next to her

“How long do we have to wait?” Maya moaned

“Can you go find Jo” Carina asked quickly as her eyes widened

“I’m like 99.9% sure it’s time” Carina smiled before squeezing Mayas hand tightly through the next contraction

“Si, veramente, go find Jo” Carina replied

“Okay, I’ll be quick as I can” Maya smiled before kissing Carina again as she set off to run around the OB wing in search of the doctor

Maya spent 10 minutes looking for Jo, asking different nurses and searching on call rooms and offices. Her last option was to just ask someone to page her, in that time she decided she’d head back to Carinas room and wait for Jo to come to them

“I couldn’t find her- oh you’re here” Maya smiled as she walked back into Carinas room seeing Jo had beat her there

“Sorry yeah we must have just missed each other” Jo smiled

“Was she right? Is it time” Maya asked

“Yeah it’s time” Jo nodded

“Maya come here” Carina reached out to her wife

“Yep, got it” Maya quickly closed the door and made her way to Carinas side

“You took way too long” Carina huffed finally feeling Mayas hand in hers

“Sorry I was as fast as I could be” Maya smiled brushing the stray hairs that had fallen into Carinas face again

“Okay Carina are you ready?” Jo asked

“Hmmhmm” Carina reasoned “…Maya get behind me please”

“On it” Maya smiled as she climbed behind her wife to hold her body weight

“Okay Carina you know the drill on the next contraction I want you to push” Jo instructed

As the next contraction came Carina started to push gripping tightly to Mayas knees

“Keep going you can do this” Maya whispered as Carina relaxed again resting her head on Mayas shoulder

“Well done, you’re nearly there” Jo smiled

“I forgot how much it hurts” Carina whined as she buried her face in Mayas neck

“Only a few more minutes then you’ll have another baby girl” Jo encouraged

“Come on babe, you’ve got this” Maya stroked Carinas face kissing her cheek

“I need to push again” Carina nodded sitting up right to get back in position

“Go for it” Jo smiled as she monitored the delivery as Carina relaxed again

“one more push and this will all be over” Jo smiled

Carina nodded focusing solely on the whispers of her wife as she pushed again for a final time as the baby was born she threw her head back to Maya panting heavily catching the wide smile on her wife’s face

“Here she is” Jo replied placing the baby on Carinas chest

“There she is, Maya she’s here” Carina smiled looking down at the baby on her chest

“I know babe, I can see her” Maya replied kissing her wife’s temple bringing her hand to rest over Carinas on the baby’s back

“She looks just like Andrea” Carina gushed

“The poor thing” Maya replied

“Maya” Carina laughed scolding her wife

“She’s adorable, my little Emilia Lucia” Maya pouted watching as the baby open and closed her fist

“Okay Maya, would you like to take the baby whilst Carina delivers the placenta” Hailey asked lifting the baby back up to clean her off completely and weigh her

“Sh-sure” Maya smiled as she freed herself from Carina “I’m so proud of you Carina, I love you so much”

“I love you too, so so much” Carina pulled Maya into a kiss before letting her follow the baby as she listened to Jo’s next instructions

Hailey cleaned up the baby, weighed and measured her before wrapping her back up in a blanket and handing her to Maya

Maya walked around the room bouncing the baby in her arms as she spoke to her

“So there’s me, I’m your mommy, and that amazing human being over there is your Mama…” Maya gushed

“…Now there’s two other Tiny Italian Olympians who are so excited to meet you, they’re the ones who’ve been talking to you for the past 9 months” Maya continued to bounce the baby as she noticed the baby was sound asleep

“…We have Andrea, he’s your big brother, and he’s so protective of you although he might call you potato for a while but don’t worry you don’t have to answer him if he does.”

“…And then there’s your big sister Eleora, now she’s so excited to have a little sister and she’s already decided that you’re going to be best friends” Maya continued to talk still refusing to diminish her tone as she spoke

“Oh my God her eyes” Maya stopped talking as she noticed the baby wake up

“What, what’s wrong with her eyes?” Carina panicked

“Nothing, I don’t think it’s just-“ Maya started with look of adoration

“It’s what Maya?“ Carina asked furrowing her brows

“One is blue and one is brown” Maya smiled looking up at Carina

“Really?” Carina smiled

“Yeah” Maya nodded “…come on baby let’s show Mama your beautiful eyes” Maya walked over to the bed and placed the baby in Carinas arms

“Here”

“Ciao patatina” Carina gushed over the baby and her eyes

“I thought we weren’t calling her potato” Maya teased as she snapped a quick picture of the two

“Looks like mommy doesn’t want to live to see you grow up” Carina replied talking solely to the baby

“Carina” Maya laughed

“Sei una bella patatina” Carina spoke stroking her finger over the baby

“Shall I call Andy, get her to bring the twins in?” Maya asked

“Si, that would be amazing” Carina nodded wanting her family as close as possible

“I’ll call her now, be good my little Emilia Lucia imma be right outside that door, I love you” Maya kissed the baby’s forehead “…and I love you” the blonde turned to the Italian before kissing her again

“I love you too” Carina smiled as she watched Maya leave

“I know you don’t need me to tell you this but the baby ideally needs feeing within the first hour of their birth, do you plan on breastfeeding?” Hailey asked

“Si” Carina nodded

“Would you like to try now?” Hailey asked receiving a nod from the Italian before she moved to help Carina reposition so she could feed the baby

“Hi” Maya spoke as she heard the phone pick up

“Hi, is she here? Do you have another Tiny Italian Olympian” Andy asked quickly

“Yes, I do” Maya laughed

“Oh my God, congratulations, when can I meet her?” Andy asked, and Maya could hear that Latina was talking through a smile

“Well how quickly can you get here?”

“The kids are half way through watching a movie” Andy peered round the wall to see Lucas, Andrea and Eleora cuddled up together on the sofa

“If it’s Luca just turn it off they’ve seen it, I don’t know how many times before, and Carina wants them here” Maya replied

“Okay, but I’ll tell them to save their tantrums for you” Andy laughed

“I’m pretty sure they’ll forget about it once they meet their new baby potato” Maya replied

“Potato?“ Andy questioned with a laugh

“Ask Andrea” Maya replied

“Okay, give me 20 minutes and I’ll be with you” Andy replied

“Thanks Andy” Maya replied

As the women said their goodbyes Maya made her way back in to the hospital room seeing a look of relief on her wife’s face as she fed the baby in her arms

Maya climbed back in behind Carina holding her and Emilia in her arms as the baby slept. At some point Carina had nodded off too leaving Maya alone with her thoughts as she stroked through Carinas hair lulling her to sleep

The blondes thoughts were interrupted by a series of text alerts, the blonde masterfully reached for her phone realising it was Andy informing her she was in the parking lot with the twins. The blonde lightly shook Carina to wake her up

“Andy’s in the parking lot, I should go and meet them you know try and brace the twins, warn them to be quiet” Maya spoke as she carefully lifted herself out from behind her wife

“That sounds like a good idea, I’ll feed her again whilst your gone” Carina nodded

“Okay, I’ll be back shortly” Maya smiled

“…Bye baby, I’ll be right back with two people who are so excited to meet you remember who I was telling you about before, your big brother Andrea and big sister Eleora” Maya kissed the baby

“…and your Tia Andy, now she can be pretty loud but I promise it’s just because she loves you” Maya whispered as she heard Carina giggle

“I’ll be quick” Maya smiled

“Bene” Carina nodded

“I’m so proud of you” Maya spoke as she lost herself staring into Carinas eyes

“Ti amo bella” Carina replied beckoning Maya to come closer for a kiss

“There’s my little besties” Maya shouted as she seen Andy walk her twins into the hospital reception

“Mommy” Eleora ran to Maya and was instantly scooped up by Maya

“Hi, hi, have you had fun with Tia Andy?” Maya asked and she cuddled with Eleora

“Si, but we had to turn off Luca to come and see you” Eleora frowned pushing her forehead into Mayas before giggling when she caught Maya mimicking her face

“Oh well that’s okay, you know how it ends” Maya replied tickling Eleora

“Mommy, statti” Eleora screeched giggling

“Where’s Mama?” Eleora asked

“She’s upstairs, she’s with someone who’s ready to meet you” Maya replied

“Who?” Andrea asked as he wrapped his arms around Mayas legs

“Baby potato” Maya replied and crouched down to Andrea’s height

“Veramente” Andrea asked with a wide smile

“Hmmhmm, but we need to be super quiet when we go into the room because Mama is really tired and baby potato might be sleeping and we don’t want to wake her” Maya replied

“Bene mommy, Andiamo” Eleora replied as Maya stood back up still with Eleora in her arms

“Tia did you hear that, we have baby potato” Andrea ran back to Andy who scooped him up to hold him on her hip

“You do, are you excited to meet her” Andy asked earning an eager nod in response “…Shall we follow mommy and Eleora?”

“Si, vamos!” Andrea exclaimed

“Vamos!” Andy replied bouncing the boy as she caught up with Maya and Eleora

The two firefighters carried the twins up to the OB floor trying to tame their excitement as they edged closer to Carinas room

“Remember, we need to be quiet” Maya spoke before opening the door

“Ciao mama” Eleora whispered loudly

“Ciao piccolina come va?” Carina smiled at her daughter

“Tutto bene! Is that baby potato” Eleora asked

“Maya” Carina furrowed her brow at Maya knowing that she was behind the comment

“What?” Maya laughed

“Mommy can you put me down by Mama so I can see my baby potato” Eleora asked sweetly

“Of course I can princess” Maya walked over to the bed and placed Eleora next to Carina as she crawled up the bed to rest her head on Carinas shoulder

“Hi mama” Eleora looked up before kissing Carinas cheek

“Hi piccolina” Carina replied with a smile kissing the side of her daughters head

“Ciao patatina, sono Eleora, sono tua sorella maggiore, ti voglio bene” Eleora bent over to kiss Emilia on the forehead as Maya and Carina felt their hearts melt

“Mama can I sit on the bed with you too?” Andrea asked from Andy’s embrace

“Of course tesoro, vieni qui!” Carina beckoned him over as Andy placed him on the end of the bed

“Ciao potato, sono Andrea, I’m your brother” Andrea did the same as Eleora before settling on Carinas legs

“She’s beautiful, Can I hold her?” Andy asked

“Sure, Maya could you?” Carina signalled for Maya to hand Andy the baby as soon as she lifted Emilia out of Carinas arms the twins both dived in to hug their Mama

“Hola bebita, oh she’s so cute” Andy gushed as she bounced the baby in her arms

“Cuter than me?” Eleora asked

“No of course not, but it’s close” Andy replied stroking her hand over Eleoras cheek who smiled widely

“Maya her eyes” Andy gasped as the baby woke up in her arms

“I know, amazing isn’t it” Maya smiled looking over her best friends shoulder

“She’s gorgeous, and so little, what was she like 6lbs?” Andy asked

“Si, 6lbs 8oz” Carina nodded

“So little” Andy gushed

“What were the twins?” Andy asked

“Andrea was 6lbs 2oz and Eleora was 6lbs exactly” Maya replied watching them cuddle closer into Carina

“All three of them make by babies sound like heavy weight champions, Lucas was 8lbs 1oz and Pippa was 8lbs 4oz” Andy replied sharing the laugh with Carina

“Lucas was quite a big baby considering he was your first” Carina acknowledged running her fingers through her sons curls

“Yeah I blame Robert for that one” Andy laughed

“Mama” Eleora interrupted the giggles with the most pressing question

“Si, bambina”

“Is the nuovo bambina really called potato?” The 4 year old asked gazing at Carina

“No, she isn’t” the Italian smiled

“Come si chiama?” Andrea asked

“It’s Emilia Lucia” Maya replied

“Memilia” Eleora smiled

“Not quiet” Carina giggled “..say after me E-“

“E-“ Eleora repeated

“Memilia” Eleora repeated with a wide smile

“We’ll work on it princess” Maya laughed stroking her daughters face

“Hola Emilia” Andy spoke to the baby again who started to cry “…oh do you want mommy” Andy asked as she handed the baby to Maya

“Hi, my baby, it’s okay” Maya soothed the baby as she calmed down and settled into Mayas chest

“Hey I want cuddles with mommy” Eleora sighed

“You’re just going to have to wait” Maya replied sitting down in a chair

“Awhh”

“Are my cuddles not enough” Carina teased tickling Eleora

“Your cuddles are the best mama” Eleora smiled hugging Carina tighter

“I’m gonna leave you guys to it, is there anything I can get you?” Andy asked

“No it’s okay, thank you Andy, twins come say bye bye to Tia” Maya spoke as she helped the twins out of bed and handed Emilia back to Carina

“Bye Tia!” The twins shouted in unison as they both hugged Andy

“Bye babies” Andy smiled hugging them back

“I’ll see you soon, if you need anything just call” Andy hugged Maya before walking off to the elevator

“Come on, let’s go have some more cuddles with Mama” Maya spoke as she ushered the twins back into the room

The family spent the rest of the night snuggled in the one bed, Maya and Carina listening to all the stories the twins had to tell about their day with Andy and each twin taking their turn to hold the baby.
