Work Text:
Everyone is squealing around as they line up for water break. Some are trying to reach a high note while others giggle around their vocal teacher, Mr. Lee, who's been kind and loving to his little angels.
"No pushing each other," Donghyuck says in a gentle voice. "Drink first and you can go home. See you next week!"
Donghyuck watches in fondness as his cute students are getting picked up by their parents one by one. Some scream and some wave at him to bid goodbye.
It's a nice feeling after a long day of work. He sighs once more, trying to ignore the nosy part of his brain who seemingly waits for someone else to come.
"Jisungie, dad's here!"
With that, Donghyuck's back straightens up. He looks at the sight in front of him and smiles widely when the man runs up to Jisung, hoisting him up to his waist.
"Dada!" He smiles upon hearing Jisung's cute voice. Donghyuck immediately blushes when the man accidentally makes eye contact with him.
"Bye-bye, Teacher Duckie!"
Donghyuck's cheeks heats up even more when Jisung and his dad wave a little before turning their backs
"Papa?"
He crinkles his nose when he sees his own son tugging at the hem of his dress shirt. He carries him up, kissing his sweaty forehead. "Yes, Lele darling?"
Donghyuck smiles lovingly and gazes at his little child who's actually a hell spawn like him. Chenle is his precious son, an angel ultimately inheriting his mischievous nature. But his smile falters when he hears his words the next moment.
"Do you like Jisungie's appa?"
His instant reaction is denying everything because why would he even admit such things? It would make their vocal lessons very awkward. Donghyuck doesn't even want to entertain his stupid feelings. It's just a happy crush. Nothing more.
"No, baby. Why would you ask about that?"
Chenle frowns at him like he knows Donghyuck can't lie for shit.
"Papa, stop lying to me. You always tell me lying is a bad thing to do so why would you do that? Are you a bad person now, Papa?"
Donghyuck forgets what to say, though his son might be a five year old, Chenle is a brilliant kid. He is smart and knows what to say most of the time. Everyday, he's showing Donghyuck that he's polite, witty, and observant.
He thinks Chenle inherits these quirks to his birth giver. Donghyuck, for a long time, regrets meeting her but finally accepts the fact that if not for Chenle's birth giver, he has no adorable son at this point. Looking back, he feels it's utterly unfair for a barely nineteen year old to be a father at that point. He's enjoying his best life as a teenager but one fucking sunny day, she literally just unloaded all responsibility at his feet and left without leaving a trace at all.
Raising Chenle is a little hard, he has to balance his studies and juggle shifts before. His parents accepted and supported him but they let Donghyuck figure things out and stand on his own two feet. He learned the best yet hard way.
And as he gets older, Donghyuck learns how to prioritize his son every step of the way. He has big dreams of being in the limelight before. He always wanted to be an idol, a world class artist but he knew it would never happen right now.
His dreams now revolve around the little angel in his arms. It's always Chenle, his well-being and happiness comes first. Donghyuck has never regretted anything when it comes to his son and he's pretty sure he'll go through it over again because having his baby boy is the best blessing in his life.
"Papa doesn't want to answer my question. I think Papa Hyuckie is lying and he really likes Jisungie's appa! Liar, liar pants on fire!"
Donghyuck laughs, ears hurting from the way Chenle screams at him and whines his dolphin like giggles. He sighs as his son wiggles down from his hold, eventually running around the humble voice studio.
He's now reaping all of his planted hard work. Donghyuck has worked non-stop for him to have this little studio by himself. He likes teaching little kids who have passion for music and singing. He goes to his boring 8-5 office job on the weekdays and trains little angels during the weekend.
This vocal training eventually unleashed Donghyuck's more confident and brighter side. Despite having a sunny outlook in life, he's actually pretty tamed and quiet during his university days. He's not much of a looker and nobody even gave him any interest before.
Sure he has experimented a few times until finding out he leans into liking guys even more but apart from that, Donghyuck has never been into a serious relationship. And with Chenle in his life, he pretty much knows that it's going to be hard for other people to like him.
No one would want an extra person, an excess baggage in a relationship. And at this point, all Donghyuck wants is to have a stable, long-term relationship with someone and not just a passing fancy.
So he's not entirely sure if he could even muster up the courage to talk to Jisung's dad. Donghyuck feels he still has game in his flirting skills but it's been a long time since he felt like this. Besides, Jisung's dad looks expensive as hell with his clean cut and crisp button down he always wears every time he fetches his kid.
Donghyuck feels faint when he sees the man of his daydreams approaching his way, little Jisung tugging his dad's arms as he hears Chenle's screams. Jisung giggles and soon leaves their side to play the piano with Chenle.
The man in front of him smiled bashfully and Donghyuck's knees almost buckled. It's rude to stare but man, he's already a goner.
"Hi," he greets. "I'm Mark Lee, Jisung's father. I believe your Mr. Lee, his teacher?"
Donghyuck extends his clammy palms, almost combusting from the firm grip of Mark's hand. "Yeah," he croaks. "You can call me Donghyuck. I own this place and Chenle's my son."
Mark chuckles before dropping his hand, he misses the heat instantly. "I know. Jisungie talks about you and Lele a lot."
"I hope it's all good things, Mr. Lee—I mean Mark. I'm sorry, I'm very awkward at this."
"It's okay, you're good. I hope I don't make it more awkward but," Donghyuck watches Mark struggling, his cheeks reddens while rubbing his nape. "I was wondering if I can get your number?"
Donghyuck gapes at the man in front of him, face heating up as Mark literally makes his heartbeat go crazy. He didn't think he's interested in him. He feels like a high schooler with his crush asking him to prom.
"I mean...we could arrange playdates for Lele and Jisung? Sungie's been bothering me everyday if he could spend more time with your son. Don't tell him I told you but Jisungie's smitten with Chenle."
Oh god.
He wants the ground to swallow him whole. Donghyuck thinks Mark is interested in him but it's actually a date for their kids. He's just innocently asking for his number so they could have cute meetings with their sons.
Goodness. He doesn't even know if Mark has a partner or likes men.
Mark smiles to himself as he watches Donghyuck patiently. He looks like he's having an inner monologue with himself. If Mark's being honest, he finds the teacher cute but he only wants his number for play dates. Yep. That's all.
All of Donghyuck's plan to leave the country due to embarrassment has piled up once more when he hears Chenle's loud voice.
"Papa, stop staring at Jisungie's appa and just give him your number."
While Donghyuck suffers deep inside, Mark is amused at the situation. He then grabs his phone, giving it to Donghyuck to key in his number. He looks dazed and Mark has to stop himself from admiring the view too much. Once he's done, he purposely brushes their fingers together and the electricity travelling to his spine feels nice.
"Thank you, Hyuck-ssi. I'll reach out to you soon. Bye-bye, Lele."
Donghyuck stares at Mark crouching down to pinch Chenle's cheeks and he feels a tinge of jealousy because his own son won’t even allow him to do something like that. It’s been a few minutes and both Donghyuck and Chenle are smitten by Mark Lee.
Mark grins at him one last time before bidding their goodbye and promising a playdate to a giggling Chenle perched on his arms. His son smiles at him teasingly like he knows something that Donghyuck doesn't.
He is utterly fucked.
~
They don’t schedule the playdate right away as Donghyuck learns that Mark Lee is a busy human being. He soon finds out that Mark is one of the infamous record producers in a big entertainment agency but he keeps a low profile because he has his son on his wing. Donghyuck sympathises with him as he knows that being under show business is not an easy job.
There are lots of judgmental people anywhere waiting for you to make a mistake and Donghyuck understands that this may harm Jisung if anything wrong happens. And that’s the reason why he takes care of Jisung for a week now because Mark rarely goes home to his son due to his studio work.
Donghyuck discovers Mark Lee like how he first learned to reach high notes on his favorite song, it’s hard but everything’s worth it. Some parts are complicated but you just need to have a technique to figure it all out.
Mark Lee is shy at first but once he’s comfortable enough, he’ll let you in so easily. He’s warm and gentle, and has a soft spot for Jisung. His eyes turn into crescent when Donghyuck jokes around, he squeals like Chenle when he laughs, and he’s very easy to please.
Mark is also humble despite being loaded and rich, a responsible father and he admires him for that. Donghyuck is aware of the fact that the more time he spends with the Lees, the more he can’t deny that it’s very easy to fall in love with Mark and Jisung.
Donghyuck tries his best to stop his blooming feelings, aware of the fact that Mark is not looking for anything right now. He doesn’t explicitly ask Mark about this but based on his stories, he simply assumes that the man won’t be interested in dating at this point. He has a partner before but Jisung’s birth giver unfortunately died during childbirth. His heart hurts knowing that Mark truly loves this person.
Mark’s sole attention is focused on his son but he also assures Donghyuck that he’s already okay with the past and learns to live with what he has right now, especially that Jisung is starting to come out of his shell.
“It’s all because of you and Chenle.”
He remembers telling Donghyuck about this. Jisung is normally shy and timid, he doesn’t trust people at first but because of his piano and vocal lessons, he starts to be more outgoing with the help of the sunny personality of Donghyuck and his son. Mark’s fears are lessened as their sons are now friends.
And Mark is at ease knowing that Donghyuck takes care of Jisung and loves him like his own. He has never thought of needing a new partner to stay focused on providing for his son’s needs but the past few weeks have proven to him that if Donghyuck would be his potential partner, he wouldn’t mind giving it a try.
“Earth to Mark-hyung, are you still there?” Donghyuck laughs upon hearing Mark’s yawn for the nth time. “You’re making me worried, I’ve been telling you about Jisung’s progress and all you ever did was yawn! Am I boring you?”
“I’m sorry,” he whines. “I love hearing you talk but this is so awful, Hyuckie. I’m tired and I feel really bad that Sungie has to stay for another day at your house.”
The butterflies keep on swimming inside Donghyuck's belly. He feels all the pleasant and warm feelings whenever he hears Mark’s voice. He misses him dearly and it’s really been a while since he saw the man.
“I told you it’s fine. I like taking care of our–” Donghyuck almost slips. “I-I mean your son. And Jisung likes staying here too, right baby?”
Jisung hums in agreement and proceeds to ignore them in favor of bugging Chenle. He smiles fondly, looking at the two boys enjoying their snacks while watching some cartoon rerun on the screen.
“Oh god,” Mark blurts, whining some more. “My son likes you more than me already. What are you doing, Hyuckie!”
Donghyuck laughs uninhibited, chest blooming with so much warmth and fondness. “Well what can I say? I am a man of many talents. I got this, Markie. Please stop worrying about us.”
Mark sighs in resignation, and Donghyuck hopes he truly knows that he will never be a bother. And that he really loves taking care of Jisung like he is his own son too.
“I’ll make it up to you, Hyuckie. Thank you for everything, if it’s too much you can drop him off to my cousin’s house–”
“Mark Lee, you stubborn ass!” Donghyuck huffs. “I told you, it’s okay! One more complain and I’ll punch you tomorrow.”
Mark chuckles in response and yawns once more. “Okay. No need to be violent. Can I say good night to Jisungie?”
Donghyuck taps Jisung’s shoulder and gives the phone to him. He hears the kid telling how much he misses Mark and that he loves him.
His heart is so full because the four of them feel like a family already. “Sleep early tonight, Markie. I swear I’ll bury you in bed if I see you yawning tomorrow.”
He can hear the smile on Mark’s voice and poor poor Donghyuck is head over heels for this man. “Good night, Hyuckie. You make everything feel so much better. See you tomorrow.”
Mark doesn’t give him a chance to wish him well tonight and leaves Donghyuck in a blushing mess.
~
“Your dad will be fetching you tomorrow morning. No more playing around, okay? You two need to sleep early.”
Jisung nods and doesn’t complain when he tucks him and Chenle on the bed after finishing their milk.
“Can Jisungie stay here at Uncle Hyuckie’s place when Dad is at work?”
Donghyuck nods before kissing their foreheads. “Of course, baby. But you have to ask your Appa nicely. I’m sure he misses you already, he’s just busy doing grown-up stuff.”
“Then can Uncle Hyuckie be my Papa too so you and Chenle can stay with us forever?”
“Yes, Papa! Can I have Uncle Markie as my Dad too? That would be so cool, Jisungie and I will be brothers!”
"Brothers!" Jisung exclaims. "I want to be your brother, Lele!"
He’s taken aback while looking at Jisung and Chenle’s sparkling eyes. Donghyuck doesn’t even know what to answer but if it’s up to him, he would love to stay with the Lees forever. Chenle doesn’t normally want anyone to stay but his son gets so attached with Mark and Jisung in just a short span of time.
“I would love to, my darlings,” Donghyuck whispers. “But Uncle Hyuckie and Uncle Markie have to talk about this, okay? It’s a pretty big decision so I can’t answer for now.”
“But Dad likes Uncle Hyuckie,” Jisung whines and Donghyuck’s cheeks heat up. “He says Uncle Hyuckie is nice and pretty and loves Jisungie so much!”
He just giggles, feeling elated with every word coming out of Jisung’s lips. “Of course I love Jisungie and my baby Lele so much.”
The two boys give him a couple of kisses before settling down. “No fighting, okay? Good boys who sleep early will have pancakes tomorrow. Good night, my angels."
They just nod in agreement and turn on the night lamp after Donghyuck gets out of Chenle's room.
"Lele."
"What? Papa said we should sleep so he'll cook a delicious breakfast tomorrow."
Jisung sulks and looks at the glow in the dark stickers on the ceiling. "I really want Uncle Hyuckie to be my Papa too. Do you think he and Dad will ever be together?"
Chenle snorts before rolling over to look at Jisung. He's been thinking about that too, enjoying every single time they're spending with the Lees. And Chenle knows that this makes his Papa so much happier. Ever since Jisung and his dad entered their life, everything feels a little lighter and more enjoyable than usual. Chenle has something now to look forward to every weekend.
He may be young but he's smart enough to figure things out. And he's thought about it an unhealthy amount of times but having Uncle Markie as his second Dad doesn't seem so bad. Mark is very nice and kind and treats them to ice cream whenever he's not busy.
So if Mark and his Papa get together, Jisungie and him could have more sleepovers and all of them will live in a bigger house together.
“I don’t know but I hope that happens too, Sungie. Why are we thinking about this? It’s a grown-up thing.”
Jisung frowns at him before sighing. “Well..I just don’t want to be apart from you and Uncle Hyuckie too. Besides, he makes better food than Dad. I really want to be with you guys so now I’m planning to do something. Maybe we can help them be together?”
Chenle widens his eyes, he doesn’t like meddling with anything that might worry his father. His Papa tells him to stay out of trouble and despite Chenle being a little mischievous sometimes, he wouldn’t want to hurt his Papa’s feelings.
“We could get in trouble for that, Sungie. Would you want my Papa and your Dad crying because of your plan?”
Jisung pouts before shaking his head in response. “I just want them to be together, is it really bad? Maybe we could set-up a playdate but for adults? Operation to get Markie and Hyuckie together sounds cool, right?”
Chenle just hits Jisung with a pillow. That sounds like a nice plan but he’s too sleepy and tired to cooperate. It seems fun and seeing Jisung asking them to get in trouble for the sake of their parents’ relationship seems a lot more thrilling.
“Sure. Let’s talk about it tomorrow or Papa will get mad that we stayed up late again.”
The other boy looks okay with it and Chenle laughs in amusement. He is excited for the coming days.
But the next morning comes and their plan is already long forgotten.
~
The next few weeks bring Donghyuck’s feelings to another level. Mark really made sure to make it up to him—he’s everywhere and everyday, he spends time with Chenle whenever Donghyuck is at his boring office job. Mark stays during the weekend lessons, treats them with food and spoils them rotten.
Jisung’s word of wanting him as his Papa too has never left his mind, in fact it just heightened all of Donghyuck’s attraction towards Mark. It doesn’t help that Mark actually looks at him with so much longing in his eyes and his poor heart has gone overdrive for this man.
The mutual pining coupled with nonstop mentioning of each other’s name ignites the fire on Jisung’s bones. One rainy day leaves him in the care of his sulky Dad who wishes someone would take care of him. Mark is sick and he gets really whiny when he’s unwell.
It doesn’t help that Jisung is somehow irritated that he can’t attend Donghyuck’s classes this weekend.
“Come on, buddy. Be nice to Dad and keep quiet while I finish writing this one,” Mark coughs and honest to god wishes he has Donghyuck to attend to his and Jisung's whims.
“But Dad,” Jisung stomps, a habit he has learned from his teacher and Mark is really going insane because all he can think about is Donghyuck even when his own son is pouting at him. “You could just call Uncle Hyuckie. Please, I’m hungry and I wanna see them. I miss them so much.”
Mark starts panicking when Jisung starts tearing up. His son rarely cries so it’s a surprise that he’s upset. He can’t blame him though, Mark is getting too attached more than he’s allowed to.
“It’s only a day, Sungie. Don’t cry. I’ll order your favorite. Go and watch your cartoons outside, I don’t want you getting sick, okay? Dad’s sorry but we’ll come visit Lele and Donghyuck tomorrow.”
His son embraces him before saying sorry for hurting his feelings. Day by day, Mark is proven wrong of not needing someone by his side. It’s painfully obvious that he’s smitten and a little too in love with Donghyuck, Mark starts dreaming of having their families together.
He wants to spend more time with them and he couldn’t believe he’s really jealous whenever Jisung tells stories about the three of them having movie marathons during sleepovers.
“Dad?”
“Yes, baby?”
“I really want you and Uncle Hyuckie together. I want him to be my Dad too, want them to stay with us.”
And Mark finally accepts defeat before nodding in agreement. “Me too, buddy. I want that too, trust me.”
The next moment he opens his eyes, it's still raining outside. Mark feels a little dizzy but his head is somewhat lighter. He freaks out a little since he forgets to order food for him and Jisung. This is why he hates being sick because he’s basically immobile and can’t do anything.
He’s about to panic when he hears three different voices outside his room, Mark recognizing his son’s giggles and the other one belongs to the person occupying his brain most of these days.
“Lele and Sungie tone down your voices or Dad will wake up. You want Daddy Markie to stay sick?”
Mark’s heart almost leaps out of his chest from hearing Donghyuck’s sweet voice calling him Dad. Oh God. He’s so whipped.
And he is in love with him.
He pads the floor silently and clears his throat upon reaching the kitchen. Jisung and Chenle squeals before running up to him and latching at his leg.
“Daddy Markie!”
Mark looks up, finding Donghyuck staring at him with glassy eyes and reddening cheeks. The kids dashes out of the kitchen giggling to themselves.
“So?”
“So?”
“You first, Mark-hyung.”
He knows both of them are blushing at this point and he just wants to kiss Donghyuck silly. Mark has never entertained any of these fuzzy feelings before but if it’s Donghyuck, he’s now sure he’s willing to try everything for him.
“What are you doing here, Hyuck?” Mark takes a step to get closer to Donghyuck and the latter steps away, back meeting the fridge.
“Uhm..Jisung called me saying you’re sick so I-I cooked a little something for the two of you?” Donghyuck stutters and fondness blooms on Mark’s chest. He’s really in deep for this man. “Don’t worry we’ll head out once the rain stops. Sorry for being a bother.”
Mark gently cups Donghyuck’s face before looking at him with too many emotions swimming in his chest. He hoped his eyes could convey how much he adores him and how much space he’s taken inside his heart.
“Jisung told me you liked me during the phone call earlier,” Donghyuck whispers and he swallows the lump on his throat. He doesn’t know if he’s thankful for his son or upset that Jisung beats Mark to admit his feelings. “He says you liked me a lot and you’re sick. He’s been crying and wants us to come over. Dad will be okay if Uncle Hyuckie lives with us , that’s his words, not mine.”
He breathes heavily before holding Donghyuck’s trembling hands. “Jisung said you needed me, Mark. Is it really true?”
And that’s the breaking point for Mark. There’s no use denying these pent up feelings because everything is true. Donghyuck shows him what he’s been missing out on for so long. He makes him crave for this certain stability, he feeds his longing and makes him a better person. Mark stopped wanting these things a long time ago after Jisung’s birth giver died.
But meeting Donghyuck ignited something in him and made him realize that Mark needs a strong support system for him and Jisung. He needs someone to keep him grounded, someone who understands and would love him through the good and bad. And it’s a huge relief that Donghyuck clearly knows their situation since he’s a single parent like him.
“Mark,” Donghyuck pouts at him. “Why are you laughing! Are you making fun of my feelings?”
“No,” Mark answers, voice a little breathless as he gazes at Donghyuck with adoration. “I know I’m sick but I’m doing better now, Hyuck. I’m not good with words so may I please kiss you right now. I—”
Mark instantly closes his eyes when Donghyuck seals their lips together. It’s just a gentle peck, with their chapped lips pressed against each other. No one dares to move until he becomes greedy and starts biting Donghyuck’s lower lip, seeking entrance before kissing him thoroughly.
He’s out of his mind and all he can recognize is Donghyuck’s citrusy scent, his warmth, his sweet kiss. His everything.
Donghyuck groans before gasping for air and dropping little kisses and his cheeks down to his jaw. “You haven’t shaved yet, you look hot.”
Mark grins like an idiot before nosing Donghyuck’s pretty neck, he bites there playfully earning a little whine from the other man.
“You can do it later. I mean, you can shave me later when the kids are asleep.”
He wraps his arms around Donghyuck’s tiny waist. “I love you,” Mark admits. “What Jisung told you was true. You and Lele make us happier and we want you to stay. Forever this time. Do you want that with us?”
Donghyuck nods with tears pooling in his pretty eyes. “I would love that, Mark. I don’t mind taking care of you and Jisung. Please, being with the two of you really made a difference in our lives. I would love to stay, Mark. As long as you promise me to hold on no matter what. We have two kids at stake here and as much as I love you, I don’t want our sons to be hurt if we ever break-up.”
Nothing is set in stone yet, of course Mark is aware of this big step they’re taking but he’s old enough to know that Donghyuck and Chenle will be their home. It will never be easy but as long as they have each other, everything will be fine.
“You have me, okay? I will never let the three of you down. I will do my best to nurture the kids and love you all the time. We’ll get through this, Hyuckie. I’m never backing out. I’m yours. And I’ve fallen, hook, line, and sinker.”
“Oh my goodness,” Donghyuck giggles. “You’re so cheesy. Kiss me.”
“Gladly.”
As they seal their promise with the thunderclaps outside their little cocoon and two children giggling to themselves, Mark has found a home in the pair of Donghyuck’s loving arms, ready to shelter them from the raging storm outside.
And he couldn’t wait to tell their little kids the good news.
~
“Are you sure your acting convinced your Appa earlier? What’s taking them so long in the kitchen, Jisungie?! I will be mad if Uncle Markie hurts my Papa. We’ll never be friends if that happens.”
Jisung laughs at Chenle’s frowning face. His Dad is somehow slow and five year old Jisung is getting tired of him shooting heart eyes at his Uncle Hyuckie.
“I rarely cry,” he scoffs. “And though I feel bad that Dad’s really worried, I’m sure he’s now confessing his feelings to Papa Hyuckie.”
“Since you’re so sure I’ll give you a free pass.” Chenle eyes him sharply. “Let’s check them and if they’re now together, you can call my Appa Papa Hyuckie too. If not, I won’t let you sleep at our house forever.”
Jisung rolls his eyes at his soon-to-be brother. He wants to jump up and down because he’s pretty sure their parents are now being grossly in love with each other.
“Okay, fine! But if I win the bet you’ll have my Dad as your Dad too, you’ll convince Uncle Hyuckie to live with us and I get to call him Papa.”
Chenle tugs him harshly towards the kitchen, lights blinking as they sneak a little glance on the door. He almost tears up when he sees his Dad and his Uncle Hyuckie embracing each other. He’s pretty sure he hears the word love from Papa Hyuckie’s lips and his Dad is absolutely smitten.
“Ugh. So gross!” He looks away when the two of them are about to kiss. “See what I mean? They’re madly in love. What now, Lele? I am the real winner here, my plan worked out just fine.”
“No, Sungie,” Chenle smiles widely. “The real winner is the two of us. We won’t get separated anymore and our Dads will be staying together forever. We’re brothers now!”
Both of them are giggling before tiptoeing their way back to the living room. Little did the two kids know, their parents heard everything.
“So this is Jisung and Chenle's plan all along?” Mark laughs uninhibited, thrilled with the teamwork of their sons. “Oh, wow. Jisung really beat me to it.”
“Well what can I say, Markie? Our sons are smart. You underestimated how their imagination works.”
“Our sons, huh?”
Donghyuck bites his nose when continues to tease him. “Don’t be so cocky, Mark Lee!”
“No need to be shy, Hyuckie. I like the sound of that and I really really love you.”
“Right back at you, darling. Let’s call the kids for dinner?”
Mark nods before clasping their hands together. He would really love to keep Jisung, Donghyuck, and Chenle in this lifetime. He’s very excited to nurture and love his little darlings and start building their happy family.
His own family.
Yep. Mark definitely loves the sound of that.
