Work Text:

Goodbye to theBull-Pen Boys

Dear Mum,

How are you? What’s the news from home? Thanks for the Morning Herald crossword answers; 15 across had been driving me nuts for 2 weeks!

I’m really sorry I didn’t write last week but a HECK of a lot has happened since my last letter & I’m hoping you’ll forgive me when you’ve been filled in. The big news is The Bull-Pen Boys are no more! Don’t panic, both Jack are fine, health-wise. Jack, as usual, sends his regards. It’s just that we can’t run as The Bull-Pen Boys anymore. We don’t need to. You see the thing is, Jack Hudson’s in love. I don’t mean just seeing someone or even going steady, I mean hook, line and sinker, put out the sold sign, 110% in love. (Not that he’ll admit it, of course but it’s true all the same.)

Now for the complicated bit, she’s on our team & you remember me telling you that team romances are against every rule in the book? Her name is Sue Thomas, as of today she’s a Specialist in lip reading & she & her hearing dog, Levi, already have their own desk. Mum, Sue’s absolutely stunning; if I hadn’t seen the look in Jack’s eyes I’d be in love with her myself. Petite, without any airs but grace by the ton, beautiful long blonde hair & as smart as you could ever want but no frail flower, she has Jack’s heart in her hands, though I’m not sure she knows that.

They met, so he tells me, when she walked through the wrong door this morning & railed fiercely at him about the FBI’s ‘special’ (fingerprinting) program, thinking he was the Placements Manager. Apparently, they put her there solely because of her deafness & she was spitting feathers over it! (I don’t blame her either; I’d be mad if I was treated like that to. I think the Director’s going to have to sort that out, sharpish!) Anyway, before he knew what was happening, Jack wanted to help, she was proving her lip-reading skills over coffee, he was hatching a cunning plan & Miles Leyland was in a whole heap of trouble! (Don’t ask!)

Jack brought Sue into the Bull-Pen, talked Garrett into letting him see how she can lip-read surveillance tapes, Alderidge's giving her a go & I can confidently predict the world will spin backwards before Jack lets Sue out of his ‘clutches’. She’s on the team, period. Quite apart from anything else, her lip-reading skill will give us a real jump on the bad guys!

Lucy & Tara are thrilled to have another shelia around, D knows a good idea when he sees one, I have a feeling I’ve adopted a third ‘sister’. Miles, well Miles will either lose the chip on his shoulder or not, it’s up to him but I sure wouldn’t want to suffer Jack’s cold shoulder permanently. I just hope to heaven Sue’s not dating someone or I’m going to be doing the MOTHER of all patch up jobs on Sparky’s tender, thundering heart!

If Sue’s golden retriever Levi could talk I’d be interrogating him, I can tell you! As it is, Levi’s one smart hound, you should see the way he gets Sue’s attention when someone needs to talk to her, it’s bonzer! Hey, that’s a thought; maybe if I watch a few of the signs she uses with him & pick up one or two & ‘ask’ him anyway! Watch out Dr. Dolittle, here comes Bobby Manning!

So now you’ve got the big news Mum, am I forgiven? I think I probably am! Say hi to everyone for me, & maybe you could have Pete send me some AFL scores so I can see how Collingwood are doing?

Take care Mum, I’ll call next week I promise!

Your ever loving son,

Bobby
