A Shinigami's Woes

Summary:

Kudo Shinichi had the ability to see and interact with more than the mortal plane ever since he was a kid. He was, once upon a time, a cheerful boy.

Unfortunately, humans tend to fear what they don't understand.

Notes:

Hi! Welcome to this new fic of mine.

This is going to be a drabble series for an AU I made regarding a Shinigami!Shinichi. Updates will depend on the mood, but I do have 6k words written for this single AU alone. For now, I'll be uploading them weekly until I run out of pre-written scenes.

Chapter 1: A chance meeting

Chapter Text

Heiji has been able to see ghosts since he was a kid. Raised in a traditional house as he was, he knew about Japanese folklore, and the stories regarding the supernatural weren't new. He told his mother about what he sees, and she immediately relates to him their family ancestry.

He found that his mother could also see and interact with ghosts just like he could. From then on, Heiji tried learning as much as he could regarding the apparitions and what he can do to help them. He learned that ghosts stayed in the mortal plane when they had regrets or wanted to complete a specific task they weren't able to do while still alive.

One day, a stray ghost told him he needs to go to Beika and meet another child detective like him. Heiji didn't know why the ghost led him to the other middle schooler at a park, but he's incredibly glad that they did.

"Kudo?" he hesitantly asked, "yar Kudo Shinichi, right?"

The haunted look from dull blue eyes shifted to him, and it made Heiji gulp at the intensity of loneliness he sees within.  "Who are you?"

Heiji attempted to appear friendly, grinning as he stepped closer to the other boy. "I'm Hattori Heiji, a detective."

Kudo frowned and looked him over. "You have the Sight...."

Heiji blinked in surprise, before nodding. "Didn't know there's a term for it, but I can see something else from normal, yeah."

"You don't have the same Sight as I do," Kudo placed a hand on his chin, obviously thinking. Is that an unconscious habit of his?

"So ya can see supernatural too," the Osakan grinned and stepped close enough that he could touch the boy. He waited for Kudo to push him away, but when the other didn't, he sat down beside him on the park bench.

"Of the sort," Kudo replied vaguely.

Heiji wondered what he meant by that, but for now, all he wanted was to ease the haunted look Kudo sported.
