A thin beam of light fell on Adora’s eye and the light seeped through her eyelid. She regained consciousness to the sound of her bedroom door creaking open. She sat up, putting her weight on her hands behind her. Catra slept soundly beside her.
Standing in the doorway was a small figure. Adora recognized it as Finn after a moment. They’d only been living in the palace for a few days, Adora wasn’t quite used to their presence yet. They stood with their head down and ears back. Their tail was wrapped tightly around their leg.
In their hands they clutched a blanket from their room, the light blue one that Finn had taken a particular liking to.
"Hey Finn, something up?" Adora mumbled sleepily. Finn nodded mutely, their gaze not lifting from the floor. "You ok there?" She asked, becoming more aware. They shook their head, just barely noticeable.
Adora sighed and lifted the blanket off her legs. Rising to her feet, Finn started to walk towards her. Adora hefted Finn up onto her hip, supporting their weight with both her arms. They buried their head in Adora’s shoulder and sniffled.
Adora sat back down on the edge of the bed, still holding on to Finn. She rubbed a hand up and down their back in a soothing motion.
“Want to talk about it?” Adora asked gently once Finn seemed to have calmed down. They nodded from their place in Adora’s shoulder and then pulled back to talk.
“I had a bad dream. You and Catra were mad at me and I had to go back to the alley. I was so scared it was real,” whey whimpered. Adora tightened her grip on Finn, pulling them into a crushing embrace. Finn sobbed once again.
“Oh Finn, that’ll never happen. You don’t need to worry about that. We’ll love you no matter what, you’ll always be allowed here,” Adora assured. Finn sniffled and asked in a disbelieving tone:
“You promise?” Dozens of memories of childhood promises to the love of her life flashed before Adora’s eyes. Promises broken then fulfilled, promises that made every awful day a little more bearable.
“I promise,” Adora whispered. Finn clutched to Adora’s shoulders with all their strength. After a few moments, they pulled back and sniffled before sending Adora and appreciative smile.
“Thanks,” they said, their voice still watery.
“No need to thank me, that’s what I’m here for. Want to sleep with us tonight?” Adora asked, her tone gentle. Finn nodded and climbed out of Adora’s lap. They slipped under the comforter with their blanket and settled right beside a still-sleeping Catra. Adora scooted under the covers and threw an arm around Finn. They wiggled to get comfortable and burst out in a purr. Adora closed her eyes and smiled, already drifting back to sleep.
“Night Finn, sweet dreams,” Adora whispered. Finn mumbled a
night
in reply, but were already falling asleep. Parenthood was new, but it already felt so right.
