Splendid presses his nose into Giggles' bump. Giggles has been carrying his child for a little over three months, and it is already beginning to show, and while the morning sickness can still make him queasy, he has taken up the job of making sure each and every need she has is taken care of. Like the good father he'll be.
Like a good boyfriend. Like the good husband he will be, once he finally proposes to Giggles.
“I can't wait to have more babies with you,” Splendid says first, closing his eyes against the thin white fabric of Giggles' soft peplum blouse, taking her hand in his larger one. “I want to have about a dozen more with you.”
Giggles' eyes shot open at that statement. Superbabies are not a good idea, especially in a town this small. And it couldn't possibly be safe, because while she had been able to rear the baby kicking in her stomach now, she might not be able to give birth to the next. Alien babies are heavy and painful and demanding, like a stone alive in the stomach.
And then Splendid lifts her blouse and buries his head on her soft, bare stomach to kiss the skin of it. “I love you,” Splendid mouths into the curve of her stomach, the smooth swell of it, his breath warm and low against it. He wraps one hand around the small of her back, and the other around her fragile, birdlike wrist. “I want to put this ring on your finger.”
Giggles tilts her head down to the ground, weeping silently as she says, “Yes, yes.” A shaky smile curves around her pink mouth. She would be spending forever with him. “I love you,” she says. “I want to marry you.”
Every word Splendid says then vibrates against Giggles' skin. “I'm going to marry you,” he says as he slips the ring on her finger. “I can’t wait to spend forever with you.”
