The warmth they provided is gone.

Summary:

Mirabel was always in the sidelines, every single time. But it was fine, she was used to this. Not until they took a family photo without her.

Maybe.. just maybe.. she could finally choose herself for once and be selfish.

Work Text:

As Mirabel stares at her perfect family, she fades into the background like she always has. They took a family photo without her, and it was fine.

She was used to this, being pushed to the sidelines and ignored? It was fine. She's always been treated like this, yet she felt her heart break when they took a family photo without her.

Even her favourite Primo didn't remember she was there, but he was still a kid. She couldn't possibly blame him. Yet, the amount of heartbreak she received when her parents didn't even call out to her was so painful.

It felt like time was slowing down, it felt like she was the only one there. It felt so lonely. She tried to stop the tears threatening to leak out, but she knew they were there. They weren't gonna stop. So she did what she always did when this happened, she ran to the nursery.

She didn't care if Dolores heard Her, she wouldn't care anyway. Nobody ever did. She's done this too much to count, yet it felt like nobody, not even her prima heard her.

Huh, wasn't that ironic? Nobody, not even her super hearing prima, could hear her? She probably just ignored her, because she was a disappointment right? It's always what she's been, a disappointment who dirtied the name of the perfect madrigals.

As she sat down on her bed, she couldn't help but wonder, did someone really care? She didn't have friends, she did but they just left her after her failed ceremony. They didn't remember her quinceañera, she didn't wanna remember how her family ignored her, she didn't want to remember that her family didn't care about her enough.

What was she even doing here? Nobody wanted her here, she was just the useless madrigal who couldn't get anything right. Someone who always faded into the shadows of her perfect family.

She wondered, when will her time to shine ever come?

Her tears fell out like the waterfalls, fast. She couldn't stop them. She wouldn't.

She wonders, when will she be selfish? When will she choose herself instead of her family?

When will she realise it won't be worth trying, because nobody's gonna notice anyways?

She's always wondered what was wrong with her, ever since her failed ceremony. There must be something wrong with her, something she's done or said. There had to be.

She remembered like it was yesterday, the day she asked her mom to heal her since there was something wrong with her. She's never seen her mom cry so hard before, therefore she's never asked for it ever again.

She's always wondered what she did to not get a gift life everyone else, what did she do wrong? Of course she did, she was the useless madrigal of course there's something she didn't do right. It must've been her fault, right?

Oh she was so tired. She longed for love and care more than anything else, even attention. She wanted to shine like her family always had, without her.

She didn't belong here, sure she was born here but this wasn't where she was meant to be. Outside encanto, there must be somewhere where she needed to be. Somewhere people will love and care for her just like she longed for.

She wanted family, and she wanted love.

This time was different, she wasn't going to stay here anymore, they won't notice when she's gone anyway.

She grabs her bag, and opens the nearby drawers and closet. Her clothes were there and she needed those.

She knew there was most likely leftover arepas downstairs in the kitchen, and she needed her sewing kit just in case.

She wondered the most important question, would she be happier outside of encanto? And she didn't even think about it, yes she would be happier outside of encanto.

As she looks at her nursery one last time, she sees Antonio's bed. Her roommate. She couldn't just leave without saying a word to him, so she wrote a letter.

"I'm sorry tonito, I know this will be hard for you but I think I'll be happier outside of encanto. I'll actually be able to explore and go on adventures like the stories I told you! Listen up buddy, I'll come back soon. I'll tell you all about what I found and introduce you to my friends! I hope you enjoy your gift though! -Mirabel"

She knew he was going to be upset, yet she couldn't stop her excitement to get out of encanto. It was most likely dangerous, but she'll bring one of her mom's kitchen knives just in case.

And she asked herself another question, would they remember her? And the answer is… she didn't know.

But at this point, it was obvious nobody wanted her here. She didn't belong here, she was the nasty stain that dirtied the madrigals last name. And she couldn't help but frown at her own thoughts. But, It'll be worth it!

She knew the townspeople were most likely all in Antonio's room, so she's safe to come out. Nobody would question her anyways. She always carried her bag everywhere she went, because they didn't care.

She tried to walk as silently as possible, so Dolores wouldn't hear her. It took quite a few attempts to walk down the staircase due to her almost falling, but she's fine!

And after reaching the bottom floor, she bolted. And went straight towards the kitchen where her mom's arepas were. She saw at least a stack of arepas on the counter.

Huh, good. She never knew her mom's habit of cooking extras.

As she grabbed the stack of arepas and put them in her bag, she quickly ran out the doors of casita. She was ready for her adventure, she was gonna return soon if she ever planned to do so.

As she looked at her perfect and magical home for the last time, she couldn't help but touch the doors one last time. She thanked Casita for being one of her friends. And finally, she ran.

And never looked back, but the question remains…

Would they look for her?
