Work Text:
You have known Peter Parker ever since his aunt brought him home with her after the tragic deaths of his parents. He was quiet, but you were outgoing and stubborn enough to continuously walk across the hall and see if he wanted to play. He was kind and smart, and you were somewhat brash. But in the end, you and Peter became the best of friends.
More often than not your parents would find you in May's apartment, building Legos with Peter or scarfing down pizza rolls and watching movies. Your mom and his aunt would joke about planning your wedding while your dad playfully threatened Peter to never break your heart or he'd break all his Lego sculptures. At the time, the two of you were grossed out by the insinuation of dating.
But then puberty hit and your eyes were opened.
Peter was- well, he was cute! Especially when he would blush and stammer when you would sit a little too close to him or he found you napping in his bed. Your mother and May helped you realize what Peter was going through, and it took you a little longer to realize that you had liked him back. But you and Peter didn't exactly know how to take that next step with each other, so the two of you settled for just knowing that either of you didn't want anyone else. You just wanted each other and Lord help anyone else who tried to interfere with what you had going on.
And then Peter got bit by a spider and he became Spiderman.
Girls started to finally notice Peter much to Ned's delight, but one look from you sent them on their way. You were invited to parties left and right by boys who wanted to get to know you more, but Peter was always your plus one and he smiled every time someone looked crestfallen that you weren't alone. Everything was great and as normal as it could get with Peter's night time gig, and then you were in a wreck. You survived, fortunately, but the other driver didn't. And while that was enough to absolutely devastate you, it wasn't nearly as bad as the family secret that came to light the next full moon.
Your parents did their best to coach you through your transformations since they had never triggered their own curses, but it wasn't enough. It was absolutely painful to have your bones break over and over and over again, and it wasn't long until Peter realized something was up. Your parents wanted you to keep it a secret, so you did, but after months of lying to Peter you finally caved. After all, he told you about being Spiderman. It was only fair to tell him you were a werewolf.
Peter thought you were joking up until your parents let him witness your transformation. You apologized in advance for what he was about to see and fell to your knees with an agonized shout. Your parents had to keep him from rushing to your side and when it was finally over you were sad to see that he had cried. Your parents had never approached you after you turned because they were always told the wolf would be wild, so you surprised everyone when you walked up to Peter and nosed around his face until he hid his face in your fur and hugged you.
For years you kept Peter's secret and he kept yours, even after he became a part-time Avenger and made friends with those he went on missions with. Then when Peter started spending more and more time at the compound, he started to drag you along so you could still spend time with each other. The Avengers were apprehensive of a civilian in their personal space, but they were quick to realize that they had nothing to worry about with you.
But being friends with Avengers was bound to bite you on the ass sooner or later, so you're not surprised that everything goes dark one night when you're walking home from the store.
"It's been three days," Peter says. "She has to be somewhere!"
The Avengers have been working nonstop ever since Peter came to them with worries about YN. A few hours without any contact would normally be nothing, but this was YN they were talking about. She never went anywhere without making sure her phone was fully charged or without her back-up emergency battery, and she never failed to text Peter in advance if she was going to be away from her phone.
"Relax, kid. We'll find your girlfriend," Tony says as he and Natasha scroll through various camera feeds.
"Don't call her my girlfriend," he mumbles distractedly. "She's just- she's more than that." The room seems to freeze at Peter's words.
"Kid," Tony starts, blinking in surprise. "Please tell me you're not secretly engaged? Pep's going to be really hurt if you proposed without us there to witness it."
"What? No!" Tony's the only one to exhale in relief while the others just look amused. "YN and I.. it's just.. she's mine and I'm hers. She says the boyfriend and girlfriend terms sound so juvenile."
"Well she's not wrong," Natasha muses right before giving her attention to the camera feeds.
As Peter goes back to pacing, the others go back to their screens and tablets to try and figure out where YN can be.
Right as the sun sets, JARVIS startles everyone. "Sir, Miss YN's phone has just pinged. I've sent her location to your screen."
At JARVIS' declaration, the room is suddenly in a frenzy. Once Tony has the location and Clint grumbles about that being just on the opposite side of the city, everyone disperses to get suited up. Thor is off-world and Bruce opts to stay behind since he didn't want to unleash the Hulk in the city, so it's only Peter, Tony, Steve, Clint and Natasha going.
Tony flies, Peter swings, and they leave Steve, Clint and Natasha scrambling for a vehicle to drive themselves. Tony has to prevent Peter from rushing into the warehouse YN's phone is still pinging from when they get there, and instead they send off drones to scout the area while waiting for the others to arrive. What they find leaves Tony both scoffing and sighing in resignation. It's what he expected.
"Amateurs," he mutters.
"Heavily armed amateurs," Peter frowns.
"Look on the bright side, kid. At least we know YN is still alive and unharmed."
"Yeah, but she's strung up with chains around her wrists in the middle of the room. Who knows what they subjected her to before we got here."
"Well she appears to be in good health. Just looks exhausted."
Peter huffs. "I'd be exhausted too if I- wait.. what's today?"
Tony shrugs. "I don't know. What does it matter?"
Tony can hear Peter talking to JARVIS within his own mask, asking for the day and whether or not it was the night of a full moon. When Peter gets the confirmation that it is indeed the night of a full moon, he rushes to the nearest window to prop it open as quietly as he's capable of.
-X-
For the past couple of days, you'd been drugged on and off. You had learned early on that all your kidnappers wanted was money, so they kept you well fed and let you use the bathroom with no windows so there'd be no chance of escape. To them you were the perfect victim, close to Avengers and very much human which was guaranteed to help them rake in the money.
But when you woke today, you knew something was different. You could feel it in your bones what tonight would entail and you were terrified- terrified of going through the transformation alone and terrified of having to kill. You were a little grateful when they tied chains around your wrist and strung you up, but you knew it would all be for naught the moment the moon was high in the sky.
When the sun goes down, sweat starts to bead along your hairline. Your muscles are starting to ache with the impending change and all your senses have sharpened.
It's just your luck that one of the moron kidnappers starts rummaging through your bag and decides to play with your phone. Another handful of minutes later and you can hear the telltale sounds of repulsors from Iron Man's suit just outside the building. Not only that, but you can hear both Peter and Tony talking and hear the exact moment Peter realizes that tonight is the full moon.
Seconds pass and the sound of a window creaking open makes your heart speed double, but not one individual holding you against your will hears it.
"YN, can you hear me? If you can hear me, rub the back of your left leg with your right foot."
Mentally rolling your eyes, you do as you're told, faking an itch on the back of your leg.
"Holy shit, kid. How did she hear you?"
"Not now, Mr. Stark."
It takes everything to not grin at their brief back and forth.
"Look, YN. I know you don't want to hear this, but you need to shift. Right now." Shifting in a room full of unknowns is the last thing you want to do and in a panic you glance upward, right at the window where Peter and Tony Stark are. "Don't look at us!" Immediately you look away. "The moon is high enough for you to force the change. The others are only minutes away and I'm afraid of what these men will do to you when they realize they've been cornered."
You know Peter has a point, but it's still scary.
"Please, YN. Don't be afraid. The Avengers won't hold this against you."
"Yeah, kid, we won't hold it against you. Whatever it is."
Realizing you have no other option, you roll your shoulders and plant your feet. You inhale deeply and exhale long, centering yourself. Then slowly wrapping the excess chain length around your wrists, you grab hold of the chain and prepare yourself.
The first snap of your left shoulder blade resonates around the room and you scream out in agony, followed closely by the snapping of your right shoulder blade. The room goes eerily quiet as everyone freezes and you can hear Tony freaking out up above. Then using your newly acquired strength to yank on the chains holding you in place, you break the chains and fall to your knees.
More bones snap and shift around to be in the correct place for your new form, and all the while you're screaming. Those with guns surround you, unsure of what's going on until you throw your head back, flipping your hair out of your face.
With eyes glowing yellow, you snarl at the men in front of you. "Run."
Those smart enough to know they're fucked quickly make a run for it, but a good majority of them stick around. Peter and Tony drop in, no doubt mocking those dumb enough to kidnap you, giving you time to complete your transformation. And you know it's complete when the pain immediately ebbs and you're looking up at the stunned faces who are staring down at you.
Ears pinned back, you bare your teeth and let loose a heart stopping growl.
One gunshot rings out behind you and you take that as your cue to lunge. Your sharpened teeth latch onto the nearest individual's arm hard enough to puncture their flesh and you give your head a sharp shake.
There's screaming and gunfire and energy blasts being shot from Tony's palms, and then there are flash bang and explosive arrows being shot while Captain America's shield ricochets off walls and bodies. You've jumped in the line of fire on several occasions, using all four of your paws to knock Clint or Natasha out of the way. And it isn't until the gunfire ceases and the only individuals left standing are the Avengers that the fur along your spine starts to settle. The threat is gone, so all of your adrenaline starts to wane.
"YN?" Peter hesitantly calls out. "You good?"
"YN?" Clint's eyes widen as he realizes Peter's talking to the goddamn wolf. "What the hell did we miss?"
You glance between Peter and Clint, and the first step you take in Peter's direction has you yelping in pain and immediately lifting your back right leg. "YN!" Peter rushes to your side, falling to his knees to see what's wrong.
"She was hit," Natasha says, sauntering up behind Peter. You whine as you try to sit, but the movement only brings more pain. "Look at her right hind quarters. It's matted with blood."
Peter gently reaches out, smoothing his hand over your fur until he gets to a gray spot that's darker than the rest of your body. He curses softly before scrambling around to your other side, looking for an exit wound. "The bullet is still in there. We'll need Doctor Banner to take it out."
"We need to get her in the SUV and get her back to the compound asap," Steve says.
"I can fly her. It'll be faster."
Immediately you snarl in Tony's direction and Peter grins. "YN isn't a fan of heights. The SUV will have to do."
"Fine. Fido can go in the vehicle, hitting every pothole known to mankind."
You growl, but there's not really any malice in it. Tony smirks and you sigh, panting softly as the pain starts to agitate you.
"Well if you're going, you need to go now," Steve says. "Clint and I can stay here-"
"Aw, but I wanted to go with the wolf," Clint whines.
"Barton-"
"It's fine," Natasha cuts Steve off. "Clint can go, I'll stay."
"I'll fly ahead and help Bruce get prepared, you guys hurry it up."
As Tony flies off, Peter gently places his arms under your body. "Sorry. Sorry," he mumbles. "But I need to pick you up since you can't walk."
With his arms under you and legs dangling, he quickly power walks it to the SUV outside. He climbs into the backseat with you, laying you across his lap, and Clint jumps into the driver's seat. Clint does his best to drive carefully, but also speeds around traffic to get you to the compound as quickly as possible.
When the vehicle screeches to a half a handful of minutes later, you whine as Peter adjusts you in his arms once more and climbs out of the backseat. You're surprised to see Tony and Doctor Banner already waiting with a stretcher, and Peter gently lays you on your side atop it.
"Uh.. so YN is a wolf?"
"Yes. We'll explain tomorrow when she shifts back," Peter says. "Just please help her right now."
"I-I'm not an animal doctor," Doctor Banner stammers as they start to steer the stretcher to the hospital wing. "I mean do we sedate her or just dig out the bullet with her wide awake?"
You whine and Peter winces. "Definitely sedate her. And use a larger dosage than you normally would because her metabolism will burn it off far more quickly."
"Okay."
The too sterile operating room makes you whine, even more so when you see Doctor Banner preparing a syringe, and Peter quickly walks around the stretcher. He leans over your head, resting his forehead against the side of your face as he murmurs words of reassurance that you'll be okay.
And when you feel the pinch of the needle in your hind quarters, he presses a kiss to the side of your snout. "It's okay. You're going to be okay. Just close your eyes and the next time you wake up, it'll be morning."
When your eyelids flutter open next, you're staring up at the ceiling. Which is odd because as a wolf you only ever slept on your stomach or side.
"YN?"
You turn your head as you feel someone take your hand- hand, not paw!- and you frown. "I shifted back?"
Peter grins at you. "Yeah. You would've been awake earlier, but Doctor Banner, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Barton freaked out when you started screaming. Mr. Stark had to put you back under while you shifted back."
"Huh." You offer him a weak smile and push yourself up into a sitting position, grimacing as your entire body aches. He helps situate the bed so you're sitting in a reclined position. "So how pissed is everyone?"
"They're not, actually." Peter tells you, making you scoot over on the bed so he can sit next to you. His arm goes behind your head and you snuggle into his side. "They understand your need for privacy, but they do have a lot of questions."
"Of course. Who wouldn't?" You grin. "Go ahead and call them. Let's just get this out of the way right now."
"Okay."
Peter calls out to JARVIS and has him alert the team that YN was ready for visitors. It isn't long before the entire team, plus Pepper, are strolling through the door and gathering around your bed.
"Well isn't this a cozy picture," Tony drawls.
"I'm in pain, Mr. Stark. You can't tease me when every muscle in my body is still on fire." Tony's smirk instantly vanishes and you grin at him. "Only joking. It actually only feels like I've had a bad case of the flu. Everything hurts."
"I-If you don't mind me saying," Doctor Banner pulls his glasses off, cleaning the lenses as he talks, "but I find the transformation truly fascinating. My own transformation isn't exactly painless, but it's not as agonizing as it seems to be for you."
"It sucks. My parents have been looking for a way to shift painlessly, but they've yet to find anything."
"Are your parents like you?" Pepper wonders, taking a seat at the edge of your bed.
"They carry the werewolf gene," you tell her, "but they never triggered it like I did. They get to live like normal humans until it's triggered."
"What does that mean?" Natasha asks. "The gene being triggered."
"First of all, a bite from a werewolf does not make another werewolf. Werewolves can only be born with the werewolf gene and only when the person kills someone does it trigger the gene." Everyone stares at you, eyebrows raising in surprise. "Don't worry, the kill can either be on purpose or accidental. Mine was accidental."
"How, uh, how did you accidentally kill someone?" Clint wonders.
"Car accident," you say.
"Some guy ran a red light and YN hit him. He didn't survive," Peter explains.
"And then the next full moon, I was shifting for the first time in the middle of the woods."
"But you're okay?" Steve asks. "Because we've seen and heard things in our line of work, but your scream- it was truly unsettling."
"I'm sorry you had to see that. Usually only my parents or Peter are there to witness it, but they never told me how unsettling it really is."
"At least you guys held it together," Peter says, attempting to lighten the mood. "I cried the first couple of times."
You chuckle softly, nodding. "He did. And to answer Mr. Rogers' question, I am okay. I'll be sore all day today, but tomorrow I'll be right as rain."
"And what of your wound?" Doctor Banner asks. "May I check it?"
"Oh, uh, sure. But I think it's already healed over." You move the blanket off your legs, grinning at the small spandex shorts you're in. "By the way, who dressed me?" Everyone looks at Peter and you turn your head to stare at him. His face immediately turns red and you laugh. "I don't know why you're embarrassed. You've seen me naked how many times already?"
Tony splutters, but Pepper and Natasha are quick to swat him so he doesn't say anything stupid.
"To be clear," Clint starts and quickly dances out of Natasha's swing, "he's seen you naked because you're together? Or because he's been there after you shifted back?"
The entire room goes quiet and it's clear that everyone wants to know the answer. "Both."
"I knew it!" Tony remarks triumphantly.
Peter groans and you quickly press a kiss to his chest. "Calm down. We're all adults here." Then hiking up the hem of the shorts where the bandage sits, you let Bruce pull it off. Sure enough, it's all smooth skin. "See. All healed up."
"Fascinating. D-Do you mind if I take some blood samples? And some scans?"
"On two conditions," you tell him. "My name stays off file and whatever results you gather stays here in your lab."
"Done."
"Okay. How does the next full moon sound? You can take samples and scans the day before, and then the day after. Or if you have an observation room, you can take scans during the transformation or whatever you smart people do."
"I, uh, yeah. I can arrange for all that."
"Aw. Look at the happy little scientist," Tony coos. "So excited to research something completely new to him."
Bruce frowns at Tony and you chuckle at the two of them. Pepper rolls her eyes before reaching for your ankle and giving it a squeeze. "Well we just wanted to check in and make sure you were okay."
"I appreciate that," you say, smiling at the strawberry blonde.
"Well now that that's out of the way," Tony says. "I really need to know how long this has been going on." He gestures between you and Peter, and you shake your head in amusement.
"Why?" You muse. "Surely you knew something was up. I mean we don't exactly hide our affection for one another."
"I just thought you were best friends!"
"Yeah. Best friends who fu-"
"Alright. That's enough," Steve cuts you off, and Natasha and Clint laugh at Tony's scandalized expression.
"But in all seriousness, it's been years. When puberty hit in junior high, everyone kind of knew that Peter was off limits, just as I was. But then in high school, everyone got a little bolder."
"Ahh. Teenage hormones," Clint chuckles. "How many cat fights were there?"
"Fortunately, there were none," Peter says. "All it took was a single glare and the girls wisely walked away."
"No fights over YN either?" Natasha asks, smirking.
"Nah. I wasn't interested in what other boys had to offer," you say.
"Well now that everyone's curiosity is sated," Pepper says, "I think we should let YN rest now."
Everyone mumbles their agreement and once they realize you're actually okay and that you don't need anything, they all take their leave. Then when the door is shut behind them and you're left alone with Peter, you snuggle back into his side with your head resting on his shoulder. "So what are the nicknames? I've been hanging out with those guys long enough to know they've come up with a nickname or two by now."
"So far it's only been Fido and Moony."
"A Harry Potter reference? Hell yeah."
Peter chuckles. "Figured you'd like that." He presses a kiss to the crown of your head. "Now rest up. Your parents will be here soon. They would have been here earlier, but after finding out the Avengers saved you and that you were unharmed, they realized you were in good hands."
"Oh. Okay." As you get comfortable, you close your eyes and hope to get some more sleep. "By the way, Petey.. thanks for coming for me."
"Always."
