“I could help find you a date if you wanted.”
Natasha almost choked on her water. She turned her head and stared at Steve, trying to see if was joking.
He looked completely serious.
She frowned.
“Why do I need a date?” she asked him.
“Why not?” he said.
“If I wanted to get a date, I can get a date.”
“Can you?”
She frowned more. He had an eyebrow arched and was looking at her like he didn’t believe her. Her frown turned into a scowl.
“Yes, I can,” she said.
Steve shrugged. “You’re not exactly the warmest, most open person.”
“I could be,” she said, trying to decide if she should be offended or insulted, but it was Steve, and he had never purposely tried to offend or insult her before.
Steve took a sip of his own water and looked back out at the horizon. They were waiting on motion from the camp below before making their entrance.
“You could date Sam,” he said casually. “You two really hit it off.”
Natasha laughed. “I’m not going to date Sam. I’ll flirt with Sam, but I’m not going to date him.”
“What’s wrong with Sam?”
“Nothing’s wrong with Sam. He’s just not my type.”
“How about Bucky?” Steve said. “Is Bucky your type? The brooding assassin?”
Natasha rolled her eyes. “I think one brooding assassin is enough in a relationship.”
“Okay,” Steve said. He took another sip of his water, suddenly seeming nervous. “What about me?”
“What about you what?”
“Would you want to date me?”
Natasha stared at him. Steve flushed.
“Never mind.”
“Yes,” she said.
“What?”
“Yes,” she said. “I would want to date you, Steve Rogers.”
Steve almost choked on his water. Natasha grinned.
She’d never tell him she was hoping for this all along.
