The long, warm wait in the bakery has Bait near to hopping right out of his skin.
He snuffles around the base of the benches, butting harder against Ezran’s feet with every circuit, but a handful of stale old crumbs can’t satisfy a gut growling for the sweet, buttery scent wafting down from the ovens. It’s enough to turn a poor old glow-toad grey.
“Not long now,” Ezran promises. “Ow! It’s a surprise, Bait. Be a little patient!”
The baker chuckles. “Can’t rush perfection.”
Bait turns his back on the both of them.
An entire eternity later, Ezran scoops him up out of his sulk. “Okay, now you can-”
Bait’s tongue snaps out, faster than sight, and fills his mouth to bursting with warm pastry and - and - what is that?
“-look.”
Bait does. Rows of little triangles wink back at him, brimming with bright yellow and summer sky blue.
"Lemon curd and Xadian sky apple jelly," Barius explains. "Not exactly traditional, but there's no harm in mixing things up once in a while, eh?"
Bait considers. On the one hand, a classic's a classic for a reason...
...but he'd better sample the rest of the tray, too. Just in case.
