Work Text:
Noir just finished studying for their History exam passed out from exhaustion. Since this tutor session with Trey was going to be their last for a while, he knew Noir needed as much help as possible. He decided to tutor them in his room at the Heartslabyul dorm and make a mock exam to prepare them for the actual exam. As soon as Noir’s eyes landed on the paper, they weren’t sure if this was a mock test or the real thing because of how difficult it looked. While they were taking it, Trey carefully watched them because the one-hour timer he set was not enough to pressure her. Once they finished the mock test, Trey took the test paper and checked their answers. He then leaves the room with the test paper, leaving Noir in the room. ‘History is interesting and all but, why is it so hard?!’ they sighed before laying down on Trey’s bed, staring at the ceiling. ‘But this is the last session for a while, right?’ Noir thought; she realized she wouldn’t see Trey for a bit once the tutor session was over. ‘After this, he will have his exams to focus on…,’ they thought as they felt their heart sink a little. ‘Why do I feel like this?’ she places her hand over her aching heart. It wasn’t like Trey was leaving for another school; he was just going to focus more on his exams and hang out less with Noir until his exams were over. So why were they so attached? Then again, they still haven’t forgotten what happened last time.
“How can I make you believe me?”
The light red on their face then got brighter and brighter. ‘He’s so close…,’ his lips were only an inch apart from hers. They could feel his breath just barely touching their lips.
“I…I don’t know….”
“Well, I think I do,” he smirks. Noir’s eyes widened, their body froze.
“Close your eyes, Noir.”
Noir buries their already warming face in her hands. She still couldn’t believe that he kissed her on the cheek! Kissed them on the cheek! “Dammit, Noir, just focus on your exams! That was days ago; you need to focus on now,” they say, standing up, just in time to see Trey come back. “Hey, sorry I took a while,” he said, pushing the door with his shoulder. Noir opens the door to help him and sees he has a cake with him. It was a small circular cake covered in light grey frosting with “You got this!” written on top with purple icing. Her heart began to beat fast as a light blush appeared on their cheeks. “Well, this was supposed to be a surprise, hehe,” the boy said sheepishly, a faint blush appearing on his face. Noir lets him inside, and he sets the cake on the table along with a fork. He turns around and walks back to the door. “I still have some stuff to do with Riddle but, I already checked the mock test,” Trey explains, handing them their paper. Noir browsed through their test paper and saw not a single answer was wrong. ‘A perfect score. Hope I get the same in the actual test,’ she felt her hands begin to shake.
“Nervous?”
“A bit,” they replied, still looking at the test paper. Trey smiled at her, ‘you’re a smart cookie, Noir, you got this!’ “You’ll be fine, Noir,” he places his hand on her head, patting down her soft black hair. Noir couldn’t help but blush at the feeling of Trey patting their head.
“He’s so sweet….”
“Aw, thank you!” he replied as the blush on Noir’s face got darker. ‘I need to stop saying my thoughts out loud, dammit!’ they mentally facepalmed themselves. “Well, I hope you enjoy the cake! Oh, and when you’re done, make sure to brush your teeth,” he said as he left the room, Noir waving him goodbye. She closed the door behind them and walked to the table where he placed the cake. They sat down and just stared at the cake. “He’s sweet, kind, and caring. One of the first guys to talk to me besides Azul, Jade, and Floyd. Not to mention he’s so damn cute,” Noir buries their face in their hands again. “Why do I feel like this?” they muttered, remembering that day she and Trey met.
‘Dammit, why must it be so high up?’ Noir thought, trying to reach for a book they needed for a research project. ‘Maybe I should ask help?’ the young girl looked around for someone only to see that everyone else was already reading their books. ‘Maybe I should ask them– oh, they’re already reading. Maybe them– nope, they are looking for their own book. Hmm, maybe the librarian? No, he’s definitely busy–’
“Hey, you need some help?”
A small gasp escaped Noir’s mouth, shocked by the sudden voice. She turned around to see who it was and met the eyes of a very handsome guy. He looked a little older than them, a third-year maybe? “Sorry if I was bothering you. I just noticed you were having trouble getting a book from the shelf,” he apologized but, Noir was too busy admiring this prince of a guy. An adorable sheepish smile on his face, his voice was deep and calming to listen to, his short green hair was a little messy but in all the right places, his dark golden eyes that they can get lost in for hours on end. Noir had no idea who this guy was but, she knew he was good-looking. “Um, was this the book you needed?” his oh-so-calming voice snapped them back to reality and saw he had the book they needed in his hand. ‘Eh? Did he just help me? No guy has done that before if we exclude Azul, Jade, and Floyd,’ they thought; a faint blush appeared on their cheeks as they quietly took the book from his hands before walking away slowly. She checks out the book and walks out of the library, her heart beating faster than usual.
“Who was that guy?”
She rested her face on her palm and continued to stare at the cake. “He didn’t need to make this cake…but he did anyway,” they muttered. She began to think of him again: The way he pushes away the hair falling from her face, how his fingers would carefully brush against her cheek when he does so; the teasing smirk he flashes whenever he would make them blush; how his dexterous hands just fit so well with her’s whenever he would guide her while baking. “Why can’t I stop thinking about him?” they thought, their eyes falling on the words written on the cake: “You got this!!!” A smile began to form on the young girl’s face, followed by a chuckle.
“Dammit…I love him.”
Days have passed, the exams were finally over, and it was time for Noir to receive her exam scores. Trey stood outside of Noir’s classroom, waiting for them. He planned that if his class ended early, he would surprise them. Trey waited for a few minutes and saw students begin to leave the room, Noir being one of them, but compared to the others, they were (surprisingly) more energetic. Trey noticed how she kept looking around like she was looking for someone. Soon enough, they met eyes with Trey and began to run towards him. “Trey!” they called out as they ran. He can remember the last time he saw Noir so excited. ‘Well, she’s surely hyper today. They probably got a good score,’ he thought, smiling. “Trey! Guess what?!” they asked.
“Got a good score?”
“Even better! I got a perfect score!” they exclaimed, smiling brightly. Trey felt his heart just skip a beat; this was the first time he’s ever seen Noir just smile this brightly. “A perfect score! All thanks to you!” she thanked him; hearing them so happy made his heart beat faster. ‘I’ve never seen Noir this happy before. They’re so precious…,’ he smiled, petting their hair. “Well, I wouldn’t say it’s all me. You worked hard to study for that exam; I’m glad you aced it,” he says as Noir still had that cute smile on her face. ‘She’s so adorable…,’ he thought. But, slowly, that smile faded. “But, I…we…,” Noir trailed off, looking away from Trey. He got confused at the sudden mood change and took his hand off her head. “Is something wrong?” he asked, as Noir’s cheeks gradually turned red. “W-We won’t see…we won’t see each other for a while…,” the young, blushing student said. Trey looked at her confused, ‘We won’t see each other for a while? What do they– oh,’ “Wait, are you talking about my exams? We won’t see each other because I will have to focus on my exams?” he asked; Noir quietly nodded. Silence filled the two but was shortly filled with chuckles from Trey. “Huh? What’s so funny?” Noir asked, very confused. “It’s just so adorable!” he said, “We’ll still see each other, even when I have my exams!” He couldn’t help but smile at how adorable and precious Noir was. Already missed him even if exams were not even close to coming. “Noir, if you want, you can join me when I study for exams. Maybe you could help me this time?” he said smiling, as Noir blushed even more and nodded. “Now, let’s not focus on that. How about let’s celebrate? Want to hang out in the Rose Maze later?” he offered. Noir gave it some thought before nodding. “Sure, does after my shift sound good? Around 5:30 or so?” she said as Trey smiled.
“Perfect. Oh, and Noir?”
“Yes?”
“Never thought that you would be a clingy type of person.”
“S-Shut up…I just…I just like seeing you a lot,” Noir said, blushing once more and looking away from him. Trey smiled lovingly at them.
‘I love them…so much.’
The two sat on a bench in the Rose Maze, staring up at the sunset-colored sky. The two have sat there for about a few minutes now, chatting about whatever they can think of and no one to interrupt them. Noir looked up at the sky, admiring colors in the sky. “It looks so beautiful,” they said but, Trey was a little too busy staring at Noir. Her messy yet fixed hair and how it falls on her shoulders perfectly; their dark eyes and how they sparkle like a night sky filled with stars; her genuine and bright smile.
“Yeah, beautiful.”
“Right? The sky at sunset is always so breathtaking.”
“Oh, right,” he said, realizing Noir was talking about the sky. ‘Sometimes I wish you knew just how much I love you,’ he thought, still looking at them. ‘There is a reason why I help you with your homework, why I love having you around when we bake, even why I tease you,’ he wished he could say all of this but, the truth was: he was scared. He had no clue how Noir would react, and he knew that this could ruin what they already had. He’s been dying to say those words out loud: “I love you.” The more he looked at them, the more we wanted to just blurt it out. He knew that there was only one way to see how Noir would react: he finally had to tell her. He took a deep breath.
"Hey, Noir."
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
Noir looked at him, shocked, their heart beating out of their chest. ‘Wait, what?! Did he say that?! Oh my god!’ they looked at him and saw how nervous he was. He was twiddling his thumbs, staring into his lap; he even had that sheepish smile on his face, the one when he first met Noir. She felt her heart beat faster and faster and just took Trey’s hand in hers. Trey looked at Noir, a bit shocked at the sudden hand-holding.
“Trey, um….”
“Yes?”
“I…I-I love you too.”
Trey felt warmth rise on his face; now, he was the one blushing. He couldn’t help but smile, “Wow…I’m glad,” he said, smiling as Noir looked away from him, some of her hair falling in front of her face and her hand still holding his. “Noir,” Trey tucks her hair behind her ear with his other hand, not wanting to let go of their hand. His fingertips carefully grazed over her cheek, then her jawline, before stopping at her chin. His thumb and index finger held their chin, prompting them to look at him much like before at the library. This time, no teasing. He wanted to know how his lips would feel on theirs but, he wanted to make sure that Noir was okay with it. Trey has never kissed anyone before, and neither has Noir; this was a big deal for them. The two just stared into each other's eyes for a moment before Trey broke the silence.
“Noir….”
“Yes, Trey?”
“Can I kiss you–”
“What are the three of you doing?”
“Gah!” The two instantly pulled away and looked to where the sound came from, only to see Cater, Ace, and Deuce peeking behind the hedge. Cater had his phone in hand so, they assumed he took pictures, or worse, recorded the whole thing! Luckily, Riddle caught the three but also aided in interrupting the moment.
“Aw, Riddle. We could’ve caught them in 4k! I wasn’t even gonna post it,” said Cater.
“Cater and I just curious cuz we just saw Trey and this girl walk into the Rose Maze! We didn’t know!” Ace explained.
“I tried to stop them; I really did,” said Deuce.
The Heartslabyul house-warden let out a sigh, “Rules of the Queen of Hearts no. 10: Do not get involved in the business of others unless it is deemed necessary. I figured that should be common sense,” Riddle says, crossing his arms. “The three of you, back to the dorm and leave the two to their business. Apologies, Trey, Noir,” he apologizes before leaving the maze, the three students following behind him. “Well…that just happened. Now, where were we– mmh!” Without any warning, Noir grabbed Trey’s collar and pulled him in for a kiss, planting her lips onto his. Trey was too shocked to even move before relaxing and kissing them back, smiling into the kiss. ‘Their lips are so soft,’ he carefully cupped Noir’s face in one hand, gently stroking their cheek with his thumb. Noir quickly then pulled away, blushing madly with her face buried in her hands. “Noir? Why’d you stop?” he asked as Noir replied, their answer coming out all muffled. “I can’t hear you, what was that?” he asked again, carefully pulling away Noir’s hands from her blushing face. ‘Acted so bold yet still so blushy,’ he chuckled. “I…I’m just embarrassed. I’ve never kissed anyone before,” she said as Trey’s eyes widened a little. “So…I’m your first kiss?” he asked; Noir nodded, still a bit blushy. A small smile appears on his lips, “Well, that’s certainly an honor.” He makes her face him by taking her chin with his thumb and index finger. He leaned in close but not too close; it was just enough for Noir to feel his warm breath on her lips.
“May I have a second?”
Noir nodded, closed their eyes, and leaned into him, planting their lips on his once more. Compared to the first, this was a little slower and a bit more passionate if you will. There was a passion but at the same time, innocence. Two students who just shared their first (or rather, second) kiss and have no clue what to do but at the same time, they kind of do. Noir could not help but smile into the kiss, wrapping their arms around Trey’s neck, pulling him closer. Eventually, the two had to pull away for air. The two open their eyes and just stared at each other, smiling giddily. “Wow…,” the young Octavinelle had nothing else to say, they did not know what else to say. They just kissed the guy the love who just happened to love them back! It took the two a while to realize it was already getting pretty dark. “It’s getting late, you should probably go back. I’ll bring you back to the Octavinelle dorm,” he offered. Noir kissed him on the cheek before standing up, “you’ve done enough, I can go by myself. I’ll see you around.” Trey blushed at the gesture like he did not just get kissed twice on the lips by the girl he loves. Noir giggles a little, seeing their now boyfriend blushing. “Still, I just want to make sure you get back safely,” he insisted, trailing behind Noir, who was walking out of the maze. They smiled at how caring he was. “Okay, you can walk me back,” she said as he smiled and took his hand in hers before kissing her knuckles. “Thanks, sweetheart,” he said, and soon enough, Noir’s face became a blushing mess again. “ ‘Sweetheart?’ ” she asked and Trey just smiled innocently at them.
“Why? Don’t like it?”
“N-No, I’m just not used to pet names.”
“Is that so, darling ?”
“Stop it.”
“Not a chance, honey .”
“Shush.”
“What if I don’t want to– mmh!” Noir stopped her tracks and once again grabbed his collar and gave him a quick peck on the lips to shut him up. “S-Shut up, will you… l-love? ” they said, blushing light pink as Trey chuckled at them. “You try to act so boldly only to go back to being all blushy, it’s so cute,” he said as Noir buries her face in his chest in embarrassment. “I try, okay?” she says as Trey wraps his arms around her, kissing the top of her head.
“I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
