Sunny Side Up

Summary:

There was a slight shift on the opposite side of him and Kazutora was reminded of the other body in bed beside them. He heard a quiet laugh from Chifuyu who gently pushed himself away from him to glance at the sleeping male. Kazutora turned his head, sparing his own glance before turning back towards Chifuyu.

“Should we wake him up?”

Chifuyu shook his head. “Seems like he’s pretty into whatever dream he’s having right now and I’d rather not get punched in the face for waking him up again.”

Kazutora nodded, reflecting over a memory of Chifuyu holding his face in pain as Baji apologized profusely while he was trying not to laugh as he comforted him.

Work Text:

Kazutora was by no means a morning person.

Waking up from the early sunlight seeping through the windows was never a pleasant experience for him. Feeling the warmth against his skin prompted his automatic reaction of shielding himself from the light with his blanket with a groan, his body sinking deeper into the mattress. For a brief moment, the light from the sun was completely blocked by the blanket and a glimmer of hope shone through as Kazutora attempted to fall back asleep. However, his hopes were instantly shattered as his body began to heat up from the insulation of the blanket which caused immediate discomfort all over his body. With a quiet sigh, he lifted the blanket off of him in defeat.

Seeing that his first method was unsuccessful, he opted for his second option of shielding himself with the person who was closest to the window, Chifuyu. He reached forward, lightly gripping onto the soft fabric of the other man’s shirt and gently pulling himself closer to his body, letting his own body curl into his smaller frame. His movements caused Chifuyu to stir slightly in his sleep which made Kazutora pause his own motions, holding his breath in anticipation as he waited for another sound to come from the younger boy. He believed he was in the clear until he heard Chifuyu’s quiet voice from above him.

“I know you’re awake you ass. Don’t try and go back to sleep now after waking me up.”

Kazutora couldn’t help the breathless laugh that escaped him as he slowly opened his eyes, letting himself get adjusted to the bright atmosphere. He smiled to himself as he gazed at the man in front of him who flashed him a playful smile of his own.

“The sun was really bright this time, y’know?”

“Well, blinds exist for a reason.”

“Yeah…but I can’t cuddle with the blinds.” Kazutora mumbled with a small pout as he gently pulled Chifuyu closer towards him, wrapping his arms around him. He could hear Chifuyu quietly sigh against him before he relaxed himself into his embrace, feeling his arms wrap around his own body.

Kazutora wasn’t sure how much time had passed as they held each other, taking in each other’s warmth. At one point he had ran his fingers through Chifuyu’s hair, playing with the short ends absentmindedly as he listened to the sounds of his soft breathing, the sun long forgotten in his mind now as he held onto one of the two people in the world that always brightened his day.

“Should we wake him up?” He questioned.

Chifuyu shook his head beside him. “Seems like he’s pretty into whatever dream he’s having right now and I’d rather not get punched in the face for waking him up again. He’ll be up eventually.”

Kazutora nodded, reflecting over a memory of Chifuyu holding his face in pain as Baji apologized profusely while he was trying not to laugh as he comforted him. “Are you gonna get started on breakfast then?”

“Might as well.” Chifuyu mumbled, pulling himself away from Kazutora completely and quietly hopping out of bed, making his way towards the door. Kazutora had opened his mouth then, but held off what he was going to say as Chifuyu held up a hand, probably anticipating what he was going to suggest. “Nope. Don’t need another fire in the kitchen this morning. I’ll call you both down when it’s ready.”

Kazutora pouted for the third time as he watched Chifuyu’s figure disappear through the door frame. As his footsteps grew more distant, Kazutora turned his head towards the other man curled up beside him.

Baji’s hair cascaded past his face delicately and it took every ounce of Kazutora’s self restraint to not brush it away. He let his eyes observe his relaxed features, listening to the sounds of his soft breathing and watching the way his chest moved in time with his own heartbeat. He was able to fully grasp some smaller details of him and caught himself smiling at every little twitch or movement he’d make. Kazutora wasn’t always lucky enough to see Baji look so calm and at peace considering how he presents himself most of the time, so he considers himself lucky every time he gets to see him like this.

It could have been hours, though realistically it had probably only been a few minutes until Baji opened his eyes and joined the rest of the waking world.

“Rise and shine sleeping Baji.”

Baji groaned quietly as Kazutora presumed he was still adjusting to the sunlight. “Isn’t it supposed to be sleeping beauty?”

“But you are the beauty.” Kazutora couldn’t help the smug look on his face as he watched Baji flash him a confused look at first before lightly shoving him away towards the other end of the bed.

“Don’t give me that corny shit this early in the morning.” Was his only response, which was the only response Kazutora needed to know that he had made the other man slightly flustered.

He rolled his way back over to where he was before, angling himself more towards him. “‘Fuyu’s making breakfast right now.”

“I figured.” Baji responded, turning his head to glance at him. “Do you think he’ll let us help this time?”

“Nope, already tried. I think he’s still scarred from the last time we tried to make breakfast for him.” Kazutora hummed as he reminisced over their last cooking experience. “Those poor eggs never saw the light of day.”

Baji let out a quiet laugh as he combed a hand through his hair. “At least the toast was edible.”

Kazutora huffed out his own laugh at the memory. “We’re amazing aren’t we.”

“The best.”

Breakfast is almost ready! Start coming down now or I’ll eat it all myself.” Chifuyu’s ever so loving voice yelled from a distance.

Kazutora’s eyes quickly glanced towards the open door of their room before he turned back to look at Baji who shared the same amused look he had and they both let out a laugh as they got out of bed and made their way down to the kitchen.

The sight of Chifuyu cooking in the kitchen always left a warm feeling inside of Kazutora. Having Peke J nuzzled by his side this morning was an added bonus to the blissful feeling. Baji had walked ahead of him to officially greet the other, peering over his shoulder and Kazutora stood in place to mentally capture the scene in his mind. There was something so domestic and perfect about the setting that it almost seemed unreal. That everything about them couldn’t have been real. It shouldn’t have been for him, anyway.

But it was. And he had never felt more grateful for that.

Kazutora made his way over towards the two, peering over the opposite side of Chifuyu’s shoulder, leaning forward and lightly pecking his cheek as Baji decided to mirror him on the other side. He noticed Chifuyu’s face instantly flush red which made Kazutora laugh while Baji ruffled his already messy hair.

He knelt down and gently patted Peke J, letting his fingers glide through his soft fur as Peke J soaked in the attention. Then, he made his way over to the table where most of the breakfast had already been set.

“Wash your hands you animals.” Chifuyu called from his spot by the stove and Kazutora laughed again as both he and Baji made their way over to the sink to clean their hands.

The two of them made their way back to the table, sitting down in their respective spots. They both waited for Chifuyu to finish what he was doing and wash his own hands before joining them at the table.

“Thanks for making breakfast ‘Fuyu.” Kazutora smiled with Baji mumbling his own thanks with food already shoved in his mouth while Chifuyu casually brushed it off as a small blush appeared on his cheeks. Kazutora took a small bite of his own plate, smiling at the familiar taste. His eyes glanced over at Baji who had taken a sip of his drink before his face scrunched up in disgust.

“‘Fuyu, you didn’t put any sugar in my coffee.”

Chifuyu took a sip of his own drink without sparing him a glance. “I’m not your maid Baji-san. I’m not gonna do everything for you.”

“I knoww. But you’ve done it before. What makes this time any different?”

Chifuyu placed his cup on the table, this time turning his head to face him. “I’m tired. That’s what makes this time any different.”

“That’s all? C’mon ‘Fuyu, you gotta give me more than that. Look how about this. If you put sugar in my coffee, I’ll do the dishes.”

“The sugar is in the cabinet it’s not that far of a walk to get it. Plus, isn’t it your turn to do the dishes anyway? No way am I taking that deal. Let me sleep in the middle tonight and then we’ll talk.”

“What?! But it’s my turn to sleep in the middle cause ‘Tora got it last night.”

“And now I get it two nights in a row! I think that’s fair.”

“Fair my ass.”

Kazutora couldn’t help but chuckle to himself at the small back and forth, shifting his gaze between each person. His entire morning had put him in such a good mood that each sentence coming from their mouths left a smile on his face. Even if Kazutora wasn’t a morning person, waking up to have moments like these would always be worth it.
