“Ushijima, I think you should really rest at home.”
“I’ll be alright after warming up, Romero.”
The younger players just sigh at their stubborn teammate. Even after enlisting help from an older teammate, Ushijima is still adamant to play volleyball today.
“Ushijima, your current temperature is 39 (102) degrees.” Hoshiumi tries one more shot to convince his friend, “You shouldn’t even be on the court.”
“I couldn’t afford to disappoint Coach. I promised him I’d help out with the high schoolers.” Ushijima goes back to tying his shoes and heads to the court. Ushijima was asked by his high school coach if he can help and give some lessons to Shiratorizawa’s current volleyball team. He easily agreed and even had the Schweiden Adlers to accompany him.
“What do we do now?” It was Romero who asked. Everyone tries to come up with a plan to prevent Ushijima from playing today, and Kageyama offers a solution. “We can try to contact Tendou, his best friend. He might know how to convince him.”
“We are desperate to stop him. Go give him a call, Tobio.”
It wasn’t hard to reach Tendou, and he easily agrees to help the team out, knowing firsthand how hard-headed his friend is. Tendou hangs up the phone, doesn’t tell the team what his plans are, wanting to surprise them.
Tendou should be glad that you are currently at Miyagi, not particularly for Ushijima but for work. You drive to your boyfriend’s old high school, only familiar with the place from his stories. After getting lost and asking for directions, you are now standing in front of Shiratorizawa’s volleyball gym.
You push open the steel doors, seeing both students and professional volleyball players warming up. You look around the gym and spot Ushijima sitting on the bench, talking to what seems to be his high school coach. A student approaches you and says, “Sorry, but visitors are not allowed to be here.”
“Oh! I’m actually here to pick someone up.” Just then, you spot Ushijima walking towards you.
“Y/N? What are you doing here?” You see the confusion on his face, his eyebrows knitted together.
“Tendou called me, told me how stubborn you are to not leave despite having a fever.” You reach up to his forehead, checking his temperature and you confirm that he indeed has a fever. You pout at him, worry already etched on your face.
“I really do feel fine though.” He brings your hand down, giving it a light squeeze to reassure you. But he forgot how equally stubborn you can get too.
“If you don’t rest now, it will only get worse. It will take much more time to recover and come back to practice.” You work your puppy eyes on him, “Please, take some rest, for me?”
Ushijima sighs as he relaxes his shoulders. He could never go against your wishes, you did leave work early to visit and reprimand him. “Alright, I’ll go rest at home.”
“Eh?!” The team was eavesdropping on your conversation, curious as to the mysterious person who got the bullheaded Ushijima to leave. But Hoshiumi suddenly screams, “Eh?! Ushijima, who is she? And how’d you get him to agree so easily?” He turns his head towards you.
“She’s my girlfriend.” Ushijima states it like it was obvious.
“But you never told us you were in a relationship.”
“We kept it a secret, didn’t want the press to give her trouble.”
“That’s why you’ve never accepted any dates.”
“Sorry for just introducing myself,” you give a low bow as you tell them your name, “Thank you for always taking care of Wakatoshi. As much as I’d like to spend more time with you guys, I think we need to let Wakatoshi rest.” You give them a bright smile, and everyone catches the soft look Ushijima throws your way.
He kisses the crown of your head, “Thanks again for picking me up. Let me just get my bag.” He takes your hand in his, already dragging you towards the exit, “We’ll be taking our leave now.”
Everyone is stunned at the revelation of their teammate’s romantic partner. Kageyama’s phone suddenly rings, a call from Tendou. He puts it on speaker for the team to hear, “Sooo, how’d you like my surprise?”
