Chapter Text
“Futakuchi Kenji!”
“And here she comes.”
Earlier in the day, the team had been tasked with teaching some elementary school students about the basics of volleyball. What arose instead was their captain attempting to teach them how to rile up their opponents.
Key word: attempt.
Kenji had taken the opportunity to ask one of the kids to rile up the team’s manager, Nametsu Mai, about her being single due to her ‘daily harsh words and actions.’ Mai hadn’t taken it well and promptly beat the captain to the ground, leaving no room for mercy.
They were outside now, the team waiting for everyone so they could all make their way home together. The boys snickered as they watched their manager stomp up to their captain with a face as red as an apple, her cheeks puffed up like balloons.
“What was that with the kids?! Single?!”
Kenji smirked as he stuck out his tongue. “What? It’s true, dear manager. Your daily harsh words and actions wound me.”
“I’ll show you injuries-”
“Alright, you two, settle down,” Obara said, stepping in between them and holding Mai by the head. “We don’t want to call Coach and ask him to break up another fight, hmm?”
Mai stepped back and crossed her arms. “Fine.”
“Good.”
Kenji snuck around Obara, pushed away his teammate, and wrapped an arm around her, smiling. “Come now, Nametsu-chan, you can’t stay mad at me forever.”
“Then apologize.”
“Alright, I’m sorry.”
All of their teammates let their eyes grow in surprise as the gesture. Mai herself glanced up at him, doubtful of the sincerity of his actions. Kenji never apologized. Not that easily.
“Futa-san-”
“I meant it.” Kenji gazed off at the distance, his tone slightly deeper as the smile disappeared. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gone so far with it.”
“I…”
He removed his arm and stepped in front of her, the smile returning.
“Honestly, you could land any guy you wanted as long as they could handle you. Don’t lower your standards.”
He began to walk off, leaving Mai stunned and their team curious of their captain’s intentions.
Aone Takanobu quietly chuckled. So it’s like that.
