Work Text:
It's dark. It's dark, and Joey's running. He's in a forest—maybe. He can't see anything except a red light up ahead. He has to get there. Everything will be okay when he gets there. Branches, thorns, barbed wire scratch at his hands and face and legs, catch on his hair. He's bleeding. He's running as fast as he can, but it's like he's underwater. And the footsteps behind him are only getting louder. Closer. Shaking the uneven ground. The light's getting farther away. He's crying. He tries to scream. He can't. If he's underwater, that's why he can't breathe. Can't see. The footsteps are so loud they're all he can hear. A bear trap snaps closed over his foot. His knees hit asphalt—
Joey heaves in a breath as his eyes shoot open. He's soaked in sweat. His hand flies out to the side, but all it grabs is another handful of sheets. His whole body's shaking. He's alone. He hugs himself as he cries.
The lock turns. "Joey??"
