Lack of Comprehension

Chapter 1: Cancer

Chapter Text

Historia sat in a chair of the library of Titan High School. Her first year was almost over and within that first year… it has not gone terribly well. She’s got a big friend group, but they all suck up to her because she’s rich and queen bee, but they’re the only friends she’s got. Hell, the only reason why her grades are as good as they are is because her simp is doing all of her homework for her… when she isn’t sniffing Historia’s scalp that is.

Well… she does know about Eren Yeager’s little friend group. Having both antagonised them and helped them before. Both times leading to embarrassing moments which have hurt her reputation. First was getting bitten by Eren like he was some crazed zombie and the next was drunkenly doing cheerleader routines while holed up as the police surrounded them and even puking. She wasn’t going to forgive Ymir for that one.

Now all she had to do was worry about finals, and for some reason the one who helped her study for all of the tests and homework has been going missing sporadically when she needs her most!

“Wow you look angry Historia!” Reiner breaks off from talking to the rest of the stragglers to talk to her. “Something wrong?” He says as cool as possible Reiner pissed Historia off. He was fucking good at everything! Grades, sports, being king of high school, actually being a good person, he was everything!

“No… nothing is wrong.” She buries herself into her phone. “Is there anything you actually want to say or are you just bothering me just to bother me?”

She heard Reiner mutter something before turning back to the rest of them. Clearly he had nothing to actually say. Still, they were all arguing over something she really didn’t care about, and doing it rather loudly but she was good at tuning them out. She almost wished her creepy people pleaser simp was here.

“Hey guys.” Speak of the simp, she has arrived. Took her long enough. Why was her voice so sombre though?

Historia put down her phone, showing her bored and dissatisfied face. “You’re late.” She was actually a little happy she was here though. It’s not like she actually hated anybody here, mostly just found them annoying more than anything else. “Any reasons why you’re late.” Oh God… she was sounding like a teacher! Still, Ymir kept an immaculate schedule until recently.

Ymir walked forward. Was she looking weaker than usual? “That’s actually what I want to talk to you about… privately.” Historia expected to hear OOOOO’s from the rest of the crowd, but they were all silent. Hell, Ymir herself was acting sheepishly. That’s odd, what’s going on today? Normally the rest of them are willing to rub it into her face, but now they were oddly silent. What did they know that she didn't?

“All right.” Historia got up from her chair. “Let’s go somewhere then.” She maintained her uncaring and stern face before leading Ymir out of the room and into the hallways, scanning to make sure there weren’t any miscreants around to overhear them. “So why are you late? Especially in the last little while?”

Ymir rubs her arms. “Sooo, you know how I have been missing classes and stuff and not being able to help you oftenly and all…” Ymir looks nervous. “It’s… it’s because… I have cancer.” Historia’s eyes nearly left their sockets. Wha…what? Cancer!? “I’m in treatment right now, which means I’m not all that available right now, for obvious reasons I hope.” Ymir continues to nervously rubs her arms.

There’s clearly a spot within the conversation where Historia could say something. “Ca…ca…cancer?” She stumbled out. She could hardly believe what she was just told.

Ymir nods her head. “Yeah cancer.” Clearly Historia’s facade is breaking as Ymir notices it and rushes to comfort her. “Hey it’s okay… I’ll be fine, I promise! The doctors have got full faith in me!” She laughs. This… this isn’t a laughing matter Ymir!

“Okay yeah… I’ll… see you later…” Historia begins to walk off ignoring Ymir’s calls. She can’t handle this, she has to get away. Ymir has cancer!?

She rushes down the halls of Titan High, her mind racing.

“So Eren… I might have gotten Mikasa addicted to Call of Duty over the weekend.” A voice which sounded like Jean said in the hallways.

“Really horseface?” Historia nervously stomps through the halls only to encounter two people she really didn’t want to meet. “Oh hey Historia.”

Jean peers over Eren’s shoulders. “Yo.” Was all he said.

Historia’s words get caught in her throat. “Ymir… Ymir has cancer!” The two boys don’t look shocked.

“Yeah we know.” Jean deadpans. “We wish her all the best, although does she need it though?” Jean turns to Eren who shrugs. "I mean her father is runs a big-."

“Guys this is serious!” Historia stomps interrupting Jean. “She has cancer!”

Eren throws his hands up. “Woah there, your girlfriend told the rest of us not to worry.” Girl…girlfriend? What was he rambling on about!? “We’re taking her word for it, plus she’s going to one of the best cancer treatment places in the country and they-.”

Historia grits her teeth. “Fuck you both!” She stomps off again after flipping them both off, not even letting Jean finish. Why isn’t anyone taking this seriously!? Why isn’t Ymir taking this seriously!? Telling people not to worry!? She has cancer for God’s sake!

“Did you really spend all night playing COD mikasa?” Historia sighes. Not another person! She hears them come down another hallway so she hides behind some lockers to avoid them.

“Shooting noobs speaks to me.” That was something Historia never expected to hear from Mikasa’s mouth.

“That is so unlike you-.” For once she agrees with Armin.

“Also my dark prince Eren loves it.” Wait no that’s more like that creepy goth girl.

“... Yeah fair enough.” Have to agree with Armin on this one.

“Anyways… have you heard about Ymir?” Nope… none of that. Historia storms off from those two before she could even talk to them, or even actually encounter her.

It felt like her world was crashing down and nobody, not even Ymir was taking it seriously. Of course it’d be nice to not have someone sniff your scalpel everyday, but what about… her homework! Can she do her homework without Ymir!?

Oh god… why her!? Why choose Ymir… she doesn’t deserve it!

“Hey, Historia, hey!” Historia stops to see Ymir running after… very much out of breath. Has it gotten this bad already. “Hey, don’t worry about me, okay? I’ll be fine.” Fine!?

“Fine!?” Historia’s yell is shrill. “You have cancer Ymir! That’s not fine!” She storms off into the parking lot while ignoring Ymir’s calls to come back, gets into her car and drives home.

School was done for the day anyways… Ymir was done as well. For all the people that exist on this Earth who deserve cancer… why her!?  Why her of all people!?

Ymir is telling everyone not to worry, that’s just her putting on a brave face so they don’t lose focus on their exams! That’s exactly it! That has to be it! She was just putting on a brave face for the rest of them!

Oh Ymir… why does Historia care anyways!? Stupid girl! She never wants to think about you ever again! How dare you die! How dare she care! Good riddance! Good fucking riddance!

She can’t stop the tears from falling as she drives off, which is a driving hazard of course. She makes it home and sits in her old beat up small sedan and cries her eyes out while continuingly failing to compose herself.

Fuck, Ymir had cancer…

Goddamn it.
