Work Text:
It was Sean’s fault.
Whether that was true or not, Yok did not care at the moment. Sean was the one that said not to worry when Gram swore he saw a woman notice them entering the building.
Sean said he was overreacting, and Black backed him up.
Actually, it was Black’s fault. This was his plan in the first place. Quick in and out, he said. Steal some information that would point them toward Tawi’s next big project, and they could really make an impact.
Now they were shuffling through an office on the second floor, trying to find anything remotely useful, when voices came from downstairs.
“Cops,” Gram hissed. He peered over the windowsill, then dropped down to the floor. “There’s at least four cop cars outside.”
“What are we going to do now?” Yok asked, turning to Black.
His face paled, and Yok got that distinct feeling again that something was wrong. He couldn’t pinpoint it, but something was wrong with Black. There were moments when he convinced himself he was wrong. When Black acted like his old self again, though it hardly lasted longer than a minute or two.
“We can go out the back, I saw a fire escape,” Sean said.
Black made it to the door first, peering out before turning away, shaking his head frantically. He mouthed something Yok couldn’t make out, but he didn’t need to. Footsteps could be heard outside, and Sean grabbed Black’s arm to pull him away from the door.
“Clear!” A voice yelled distantly.
“Clear!” Another yelled, closer this time.
Again and again, the word rang out, different voices, but all of them getting steadily closer.
The door swung open and—
Yok had never been so glad to have a gun pointed in his face.
Well, it wasn’t the gun itself as much as the familiar face staring down the barrel of it.
Dan’s eyes widened and he lowered the gun, eyes darting around, taking in each face before settling on Yok.
Please, Yok mouthed at him.
Dan stared at him. The air in the room was so thick, so heavy, it felt like it was crushing Yok’s lungs.
He opened his mouth, expression unreadable, and Yok tensed. He could see Black flinch out of the corner of his eye.
“Clear!” Dan called out, his eyes never leaving Yok’s. Yok let out a long, quiet breath, smile stretching across his lips. “I’ll cover you, but you have to get out,” he said quietly. His eyes moved around the room again, and Yok knew everyone had to be staring at him with some mixture of confusion and distrust, but he couldn’t look away to be sure.
“What the hell is this?” Sean demanded, his voice like a viper’s hiss.
Dan barely glanced at him before he looked back at Yok, stepping closer and grabbing his arm. Gram made to lunge at them, but Yok held his free hand up to stop him.
“There’s an officer stationed at the front and two out back. On the first floor, there’s a window on the north side. It leads into a dead end alleyway, so there’s no officer guarding it. You can reach the fire escape on the next building over, and get across the roof that way,” Dan spoke quickly and quietly, eyes never leaving Yok’s even as his friends gathered closer, each of them clearly looking for a fight at the first sign.
Dan’s hand dropped from Yok’s arm and he took a step back, before he pulled his sleeve back to check his watch. “Wait four minutes after I leave. We’ll have the second floor cleared and going up to the third.”
“What kind of sick game is this?” Sean asked.
“No game, just get out,” Dan answered evenly.
“And why should we trust you?” Black asked. He sounded every bit as skeptical as Sean, though much less angry.
Dan shrugged, eyes shifting back to Yok’s. “Don’t trust me. Trust your friend.”
Yok could feel every eye in the room turn towards him, even as Dan turned his back and started for the door.
Adrenaline was pumping through his veins, fear replaced by the most wonderful sense of relief that made him want to laugh if the situation wasn’t so dire.
Before Dan reached the door, and before Yok could think about it, he grabbed Dan’s arm and spun him around. His other hand came up to the side of Dan’s face, pulling him forward until their lips crashed together.
It was a chaste kiss, but his chest felt like it would explode with the amount of warmth, of relief and desire flooding through him. Lips moved against his for barely a second before there was a hand on his chest, pushing him back.
He watched Dan’s eyes flutter open, a hint of a smile on his lips before it was gone.
“Four minutes,” was all he said before he was gone.
Everything felt frozen. Time, air, space. It was frozen, until Sean was in his face, indignant fury etched across his features.
“You wanna fucking explain that?” Sean spat in his face.
“I will, I will,” Yok said quickly. How he’d explain that, he wasn’t entirely certain. “But we have to get out first.”
He looked around at the others for help. Black looked confused, but not angry. Gram looked amused. Useless, both of them.
Sean was the one that finally spoke, just as quiet, though less furious, which was a mild improvement. “We’ve got four minutes. Talk.”
