Work Text:
The love between lines, through words that were written and left agony on its readers.
Mistakes that promises couldn't fix, and tears that collected on his pillows.
Arms wrapped around himself in hugs that no one would give, whispered promises from his lips by someone else's words.
Addicting love stories that were never meant to be, and screams that shook his heart.
Deaths that left a hole in his heart, and books that were thrown in distress.
Falling with him was never supposed to be like this.
San fell in love with a fictional character, and it was sadly the villain that would not be promised a happy ending.
After Wooyoung's death, San had cried for days, having found comfort in Wooyoung's words.
He related an unusual amount to this character, he knew what it felt like to be left behind, to be given a false sense of hope only to fall in darkness, to be clawing at their every word, hoping it would give you any sense of relief from the heartbreak, begging on your knees for them.
He had picked the book up after the cover caught his attention in the library, and he bought it after reading the plot and realizing the main character had the same name as him, though the character's full name was Sanhoon, it was still close.
He didn't think he would be crying at 3 am, over a character that wasn't even real.
Wooyoung was the story's villain, someone who had fallen for Sanhoon after the latter had helped him onto his two feet after his whole world had crumbled.
It started as an innocent love that made San's heart squeeze in delight, rooting for him despite the male lead being Yunho, not Wooyoung.
Only did it turn to obsession after Sanhoon had chosen Yunho, someone who had lit his whole world up and had given him promises of endless love.
He had realized maybe the character he loved wasn't mentally okay, in more than one way, but he could only feel pity for him. Wooyoung had no one and Sanhoon was the only one that had showed him the love that he had been deprived of.
San hadn't realized he was crying until his tears hit the paper, staining it.
It was ironic, how well it fits the scene.
He had given Wooyoung rivers full of tears, yet the Sanhoon had given him something greater; A light for his dark world. He had given Wooyoung a sun so bright that it would dry San's river so easily, and that's when he knew he could never compete with the book San.
The only things they had in common were their name and appearance, otherwise, Sanhoon was better in every aspect that San could never be.
It was almost like San and Wooyoung were the flawed versions of Sanhoon and Yunho. A couple tainted with flaws that nothing could repair, not hugs or kisses, not sweet promises of nothings, not a bright smile that clouds could rain on so easily.
San had fallen asleep with the book in his hand, finishing it dryly with his head a mess. There were only a few chapters left in the book, where it shows the book San and Yunho happy and finally getting married. They acted as though they had gotten rid of a true villain, but Wooyoung's biggest crime was loving Sanhoon.
Muttering words. That was the last thing San had expected when he woke up.
He lived alone, who was speaking?
He realized he still had the book in his hands, and sat up, going to put the book away.
Only then did he realize he wasn't at his home, not in the comfort of his bed that had tear stains on the pillow.
No, he was in a place full of darkness.
"Write your own story, or follow mine. Go through a path of mystery or one of promised happiness."
"You read the book, and fit the role."
That was the last of his memories before he fell asleep once again, the sudden voice in his head causing his vision to become blurry before everything went into darkness.
And the next thing he knew, he was in a whole new world, in a bedroom that didn't belong to him, with a man that he had no relations with.
"Sannie? You're awake?" He was referring to him with the same nickname that San's past friends had called him, but who was this man?
Panicked, San tried to get out of bed but that seemed to startle the stranger, for he grabbed his wrist and looked at him worriedly.
And uttered words that took San's breath away.
"Sanhoon, are you okay?"
He had entered the world inside the book he so dearly loved.
Your fate is now in your hands.
