Chapter 1: Detention

Chapter Text

It’s afternoon. The class just had potion class from Snape. When it’s time all the students get up and move towards the door to leave. Slowly they all disappear from the room, except two. “Harry, Draco!” Snape calls them back calmly. As he stops walking Draco sighs and rolls his eyes. “Sit. Down.” Turning back around reluctantly Draco sits down at the table he was also sitting during class. While he waits for Snape to speak again he takes a quick look at Harry, who has also seated himself not too far away from him.

After he has put his book down on the desk, Professor Snape walks to a spot in front of them both and clasps his hands behind his back. For a moment he just looks at both of them, first at Harry and then at Draco. While Snape is looking at him Draco tries to find an emotion in his eyes, revealing what will happen next, but none is to be found. Like always the professor is completely emotionless. Sometimes, like now, Draco wonders why that would be, something probably happened to him in the past, but what that is he can’t tell. Not that he really cares of course, at least that’s what he’s always saying. Because that’s what his father always tells him; ‘ don’t let anyone ever know how you truly feel.’

“I am so disappointed.” Snape then speaks up without a warning. Harry looks down at his table and quietly speaks. “I’m sorry professor.” If it wasn’t for the professor there with them, Draco would have laughed at him like he has never laughed before at his silly apology. Now he just only smirks. “You think that’s funny, mister Malfoy?” Not having noticed that the professor had been looking at him, Draco looks up surprised. “No, professor.” He quickly says. After just looking at the two for another long moment, Snape sighs and walks up to his desk to grab two books, two pencils and two papers. “You will copy this until the last page and then hand it in by me.” He explains as he hands out the assignment. Unpleased by the assignment Draco looks at the book. It’s not even a thin one! It might have more than five hundred pages! So just like that he doesn’t even open the book and waits until Snape has left the classroom. When he is sure the professor has left he gets up and walks towards the door. “Draco, what are you doing?!” Harry asks as he stops him from walking out. Annoyed he turns around to face him angrily. “You don’t really think I will copy that Pottah!” He yells in the others face. “But we have to!” Harry contradicts. Draco chuckles fake. “No, you have to. My father will hear about this!” After he spat that last sentence out he storms out of the room like a real pure blood.

After leaving class Draco went directly to his house to tell his father about what just happened. No one treats a Malfoy like that! And what was Harry even thinking talking to me like that?! He didn’t really think that Draco was just well behaved going to copy that whole book, now did he? With those thoughts still fresh in his mind he opens the door and storms inside. “Father!” He calls out immediately when he’s inside. Not getting any response just yet he looks around the room to see if his father is somewhere there. When he doesn’t see him anywhere he decides to enter the bedroom. “Father!” He calls out one more time as he sees Lucius sitting on the bed, looking at some papers. Letting out a sigh of, what Draco assumes it to be,  frustration, Lucius speaks without even turning his head to face him. “What is it Draco?” He asks his son quietly and rather emotionless, just as Snape did earlier that day. Draco might be spoiled and selfish. He doesn’t like much people or care about them, but his parents have always been an exception. They were there for him, they love him. But even then he still always stays with his father rather than with his mother. Not many people would probably understand that, since Lucius hasn’t the best status. But Draco knows them, both. And he knows that his mother, Narcissa, never really seem to care about anything, she always contradicts and gets angry really quickly. But that’s not all. The longer he lived with her the more suspicious he got during the years. The suspicion that she is hiding something…

But as he looks at his father there seems to be something about him, something off. He might even looks sad or worried in ones opinion. Trying to ignore that best as possible, Draco starts telling him what happened today at school. After telling him the whole story Lucius sighs and doesn’t say anything about it right away. And besides that he surprisingly doesn’t get the response he had hoped for and expected. Instead of that Lucius slowly gets up and faces him. “Then you go back and finish your assignment.” His father tells him. Not having expected to hear that, since normally his father always agrees with him, he frowns and gets angry. “What!? You cannot be serious! I’m not going to do that! I didn’t even do anything! You fought in class.” His father reminds him quietly yet firmly. “It wasn’t even a big fight!” Draco holds on. But unfortunately he can’t get his father as far as to agree with him. “You will apologize to professor Snape and do your assignment.” With that said Lucius walks out. How can he!  Draco thinks. His father always gets him free from detention! Why not now?! While thinking about it he sits down on the bed where Lucius has been sitting. As he looks down at his hands he sees the papers still laying on the small table next to the bed. As he takes a quick look at them he frowns. Voldemort?  He looks closer and reads what it says. Voldemort is back?

That same evening Harry is in the sleeping room. When it’s already dark outside and most boys in the room already are asleep, he is still reading his book. Tomorrow he still has to finish the assignment Snape has given Draco and him. It’s still unfair how Draco always gets free from all those things. He probably has never even made detention before. But even though the boy might be spoiled and arrogant as hell, there is still something about him. Harry just knows that there is also a good side of him. It’s just a matter of time before he gets to see it. But just as he is thinking about that he hears someone approaching him. “Psst!” The person says and Harry looks up. “Ron? What is it? It’s the middle of the night.” Harry complains as Ron is standing next to his bed. “I know, but I’ve got a letter here. For you!” He explains himself as he hands over the letter to a confused Harry. “Oh. Well goodnight then.” Ron wishes him before he walks back to his own bed. Curious, he opens the letter and reads it. Although he might have rather read it in the morning instead of the dark, cold night. Because what it says shocks him:

Voldemort is back.
