Chapter Text
The first time he adapted to his surroundings was the accident that led to him being blind. At that time he was scared of the sudden plunge into darkness. The doctor said that his eyes will never get better.
His ears weren't sharp enough then to hear the sobbing of his mother.
But he adapted to his new world, honing his hearing, playing the piano as always, to show his parents that he could still play. He missed a key but his parents never stopped telling him how proud they were of him.
That made him ambitious.
The second time he adapted, was something he could look back and laugh at. But he couldn't at that time, his cousin had visited and wanted his plushie.
His other senses are more sensitive now that he can't see, his plushies had always gave him comfort and warmth when he felt the world was too cold.
His father had no choice but to give him the plushie... his cries were hurting Kai's ears anyway.
But he missed the fur of his tiger plushie. At least he will always have molang, where he hid was some place only he could feel and reach.
The third time he adapted was after the piano competition. He had hoped that his talents might land him in a job as a producer. But many saw his disability as a liability.
After many calls, he still had no luck finding the job he wanted. So he started selling his music online.
It was good enough to earn some pocket money at least...
The fourth time he adapted was when his closest friend, Soobin, announced that he was finally dating the love of his life. Since then he hadn't heard much from him. Huening Kai can guess, he didn't want to hang out with Huening any more because it was a bother to bring him anywhere.
He got it, he still has his gaming sessions with him after school but it doesn't mean that it didn't sting a little. His mind wonders to what Soobin and his lovers would look like if he could see them...
Soobin still has that fluff in his hair while one of them has nice hands, the other has a nice voice.
They come to see him sometimes out of pity if he were to guess... but he didn't need it.
The fifth time was almost his last straw. He had just went out to get some presents for his sister when someone had the audacity to knock him aside.
A bicycle crashes into him and he took a hard tumble to the side. Unable to see, he assumed that he landed on the road and on his arm which is already weak as it is. That tumble lands him in the hospital... again...
He can't exactly see how bad the injury is but his arm is numb to the pain.
He could never get used to the smell...
"I am so sorry! I'll pay for his medical bills! Anything! I just hope he's alright!"
Huening Kai faces towards the direction of the person outside and sighs internally.
"It's fine really, it shouldn't be that expensive..."
In the end, the person did just pay for everything and Huening Kai was glad that he couldn't see the stranger then, cause it would have been embarrassing for him to look at the guy.
"Are you sure you're okay? You don't feel any more pain?"
Huening Kai can't bare to tell the stranger the truth, instead he nods.
"Well that'd good... I don't know why you have to be here for a few days but I'm sure you'll be discharged soon."
Hueningkai wasn't really listening, he was tired, so he drifted off. He dreamt about the times he got unlucky and his family is looking at him like he was the source of their grief.
Maybe... just maybe... he'd be fine not waking up...
