Original story

Chapter 1: The Boy

Chapter Text

I once saw a boy standing alone outside in the rain. He looked around 15 or 16 years old and looked very lanky. His face was slightly swollen, as if he had cried recently. He was wearing only black cargo pants, a thin coat, a pair of muddy, white tennis shoes, and a nearly shredded scarf. Even through my rain-streaked window, I could see him shivering from the cold. All of a sudden, lightning struck the ground right in front of the window in which I was looking out of, and for a split second, I was blinded by the light. When it disappeared and my eyes finally adjusted, I looked out to find the boy was gone; it was as if he had disapparated.

Now, right before the lightning hit, the boy had looked straight at me with his piercing black eyes. Yes you heard me, black. It looked as if he was possessed by a demon. When he stared at me, it was like he could see into my soul and his gaze was so intense that it sent shivers down my spine.

As I think back, I think I might have been hallucinating. I was very tired that day, for I had just finished a big essay I had for school, so there was a high chance that I just started seeing things out of fatigue.

It's been about 5 years since that happened, so you might be wondering why I'm so affected by this. The thing is, that boy looked exactly like my best friend, Kazimir. (Except for the eyes, of course) Kazimir and I had been best friends since we were little; our parents were friends in college. Him and I, we would do everything together: go to the same school, get the same test grades, do the same sports, etc. Then, one day, we got into an argument.

I remember the day so clearly. It was a Thursday and the dew was still fresh on the grass. I was walking over to his house, which was a couple blocks from mine, so we could walk to school together, like we always do. I got up to his doorstep, rung the doorbell, and a few seconds later the door opened, revealing a very angry looking teenage boy.

START OF FLASHBACK

"Hey, Kaz," that was my nickname for him, "are you alright?"

"I'm fine, my father is just drunk, again."

"Oh, sorr-"

He held up his hand, "STOP. I don't need you're pity."

I look at him, angrily, "Well, I'm sorry that I'm the only person who looks out for you."

He sighed, "Well, maybe I don't need you to look out for me anymore. Maybe I'm tired of being treated like a baby, like I'm some charity case."

I step back, offended. "Are you kidding me?! Ever since your mother died and your father became an alcohol addict, I have always been there for you! I've comforted you when you were sad, cheered you up, and this is how you repay me?!"

He scoffed, "Repay you? I don't owe you anything."

I look at him in disgust, tears threatening to spill, "What happened to you," I whisper loud enough for him to hear.

"Nothing, in fact, I think you're the one who changed." And with that he slammed the door on my face.

END OF FLASHBACK

I closed my eyes, but I didn't dare cry. That boy I saw looked like Kazimir but I know for certain it wasn't him, because two days after our argument...

He died
