Work Text:
It was brisk but sunny as Daniel and Peggy wandered the streets of New York, window shopping as they went along. They had been in the city for a meeting with the "big brass," as Jack liked to say, hoping to convince them to drag out the SSR's budget for another year. It wasn't looking promising, but Peggy had another idea in mind anyways.
Regardless of what the verdict was on the SSR, Peggy and Daniel were enjoying another day in the city with no other work to do. They were finally off for the holidays, and had decided to stay on the East Coast for an extra couple of days. Angie had invited them to a holiday party that evening, and then tomorrow they had tickets for the train to Taunton to visit Daniel's family.
All of the department stores were decked out in holiday decorations, with garlands and wreathes adorning the doors and windows. It had been years since Peggy had been excited about Christmas. First Michael's death (or so she had thought, at least), then the war, and then Steve's death had somewhat leeched the holiday cheer right out of her. But it was the first Christmas she was spending with Daniel, and after the year they'd had, it seemed they deserved a little happiness.
She peeked in another window, and was surprised to see wedding dresses inside. The one on the left looked remarkably like her mother's dress, the one she had had fitted to wear for her own wedding to Fred. The one on the right, on the other hand, was simpler, no lace or frills or anything fancy, but a white wedding dress nonetheless. More like what Peggy would choose now, if she happened to have a wedding.
"Daniel, let's get married."
"What?" He turned to look at her, jaw dropped in shock.
"I said, let's get married!"
"Peg...you sure? I mean, you really want to?" he asked, brow furrowed in puzzlement but a grin starting to show.
"Yes, darling. I mean, nothing big, just family and close friends, but I want to have a wedding. I want to get married, start a family. With you."
Daniel's smile was blinding, and she was sure her own was the same.
"Wait, Peggy, I was gonna do the whole proposal thing, ya know, kneeling and everything. Actually, I was planning to ask my pai for mamai's ring over Christmas," he admitted.
"Well, Daniel, you know I'm not traditional, but I would very much enjoy a proposal if you wish to go through with it."
"Yeah?" he grinned, leaning in with a laugh to peck her on the cheek.
"Yeah." She agreed, then turned his face towards hers for a kiss.
