Work Text:
Pomu may not be the neatest fairy, but at least she washed her dishes, threw the trash out when it’s full, and swept the apartment when needed. For her roommate, she could say otherwise. Elira Pendora was a slob with a pretty face. The solar sky dragon left her tea sitting out for a whole month, piled clothes all over the couch, and never cleaned her hair from the drain. Pomu was starting to regret agreeing with Finana about being okay with rooming with someone the mermaid knew. As much as Pomu was grateful for Elira being okay with a stranger moving in on such short notice, she was equally as annoyed with all the pet peeves the dragon was causing.
On the first day of Pomu moving in, the dragon didn’t even bother to clean the apartment, claiming it was too much of a hassle if she knew it would return to this state anyway. Pomu would have been fine with Elira being messy if it was confined to the dragon’s own lair, but no, clothes and empty bottles of water spread everywhere throughout the apartment. Pomu wasn’t a maid but sure felt like one after cleaning up the entire apartment, just for her new roomie to say “Daaaamnnn, niceeeeee” in response. After that, it felt like Pomu was the maid and Elira was queen of the castle.
After the first week of living together, Pomu realized how different their schedules were. Pomu had a day job at an office working for an idol management company, and Elira was an up and running streamer meaning she could work basically whenever she wanted. The fairy didn’t realize this until one late night while trying to fall asleep, she could hear Elira cackling and screaming at a game while seeming to talk to herself. She barged into the dragon’s room to complain, but instead scared the living daylights out of her causing an abrupt end to the stream.
“S-sorry I didn’t mean to scare you, but what are you screaming at?”
Elira sighed, “Well I guess I should have explained this earlier when you moved in…buuuuut I’m a streamer.”
Elira explained after that scare why Pomu shouldn’t walk in while she was streaming and promised to be more quiet at night from now on. Pomu would have been happy, but of course the solar sky dragon seemed to have forgotten and was howling at her monitor again before Pomu could bang on her door as a way to say “SHUT UP.”
The next morning, Pomu noticed Elira was out early like usual but this time left something on the table for her. It was a box of lemon tea and a note on top that said “Sorry about the noise, hope the tea helps! - from your best Roomie, me ;).” This got a small chuckle out of the fairy despite the lack of sleep from last night.
Maybe she wasn’t so bad afterall, Pomu thought to herself after brewing some fresh tea.
She was wrong, so so WRONG. After a month of living together, she was currently staring at the face of the most vile living being on this planet. Elira was drinking the last of HER juice right in front of her face. Pomu was looking forward to a glass of cold, fresh orange juice that her mother packed her after her last visit home. But here in her own kitchen, her juice was being gulped down at a rapid speed by an anime shirt-wearing, messy haired, one-eyed dragon.
“Y-you…!” Pomu could feel the blood rising in her neck and before the dragon could say anything, she stomped back to her room and slammed the door with the force of a hurricane.
She knew she shouldn’t be angry over something so childish, but that juice was the only thing she was looking forward to when she finally got home after a grueling day at work.
She thought the rest of the day would go smoothly and she would let it go after Elira apologized twenty times to her. But more and more small incidents were snowballing into one giant issue. Elira accidentally washed the whites and the reds together because she thought color didn’t matter. Elira left the blinds open to let the sunshine in, but also left them open for so long that the apartment reached a temperature akin to hell. Elira also threw out an important letter addressed to Pomu thinking it was junk mail. At the end of that day, Pomu was so close to the tipping point that she stayed in her room the rest of the night without a sound from her roommate on the other side.
Pomu decided against her better judgment to go drinking with some coworkers after work to relieve the stress of yesterday. She knows she is just being unreasonable by still being slightly annoyed, but too prideful to apologize to her roommate just yet. A drink or two will definitely help with that.
Five or six drinks later and Pomu was beyond tipsy but not plastered like the others in her company. She was able to pull out her phone, order an UBER back home while looking at the shaking screen, and made it back to her front door. Only to realize in her rush that morning to not be late to work, that she left her house keys inside. Stuck at the front door she had no choice but to call her roommate, but at the worst possible time her phone turned to black right as she was about to press the phone symbol.
“You have got to be kidding me…” Pomu groaned as she banged her forehead on the front door. Maybe this was karma coming to bite her in the butt.
Would she even have come to let me in…after the way I treated her last night? the fairy thought guiltily as she slid down with her back against the door, I was acting like a jerk over something so stupid.
Drunk, tired, and cold Pomu sat on the ground praying Elira wasn’t streaming and could somehow hear her inner thoughts of apologizing and wanting to get inside their home. At that moment, as if the universe heard her woes, Elira opened the front door causing Pomu to fall backwards and landed right at the dragon’s feet.
Elira looked at her puzzingly and chuckled softly, “Pomu? Fallen for me already?”
“E-Elira?” Pomu tried to stand up quickly, but because she was still intoxicated, stumbled into the dragon’s arms that were surprisingly stronger than they looked. Flustered, Pomu immediately tried to stand on her own. “S-sorry! I must be drunker than I thought!” she squeaked out.
Instead of letting go of the warm fairy, Elira tightened her grip around her. She smiled and teased, “Well now, we don’t want you tripping all over my clothes on the floor do we? I’ll help you get to bed.” Pomu tried to decline but Elira just laughed it off and half-carried the fairy back to her room.
The dragon finally loosened her grip on Pomu once they got to her bedroom. “T-thank you again…for letting me in and helping me to my room. But how did you know I was out there?” Pomu asked nervously.
Elira sheepishly rubbed the back of her neck, “Well I didn’t actually know you were outside, but saw your house keys still hanging on the key rack…and you weren’t back home yet so…I got kind of worried you know? So I was going to check on you in case you passed out somewhere, but there you were!”
Pomu blinked at Elira and started to feel even warmer in her face, She was still worried about me? Without a second beat, Elira opened Pomu’s bedroom door and gently ushered her inside.
“You should probably get some sleep now Miss Rainpuff,” Elira smiled at her.
“Oh y-yeah! And uh thanks again…and also I-I’m sorry about yesterday, over the juice. I shouldn’t have gotten mad at you like that…” Pomu looked down at her feet.
“Hey don’t worry about that! It’s my fault for drinking it without asking! Your mom does make great juice though,” the dragon exclaimed trying to lighten the mood, “it’s behind us now, so you don’t have to be so awkward with me now.”
Oh, she noticed I was avoiding her, Pomu thought sadly for a moment. She held out her hand to her companion, “Truce? And also friends?”
Elira was slightly taken back from the fairy’s gesture but giggled and grabbed the outstretched hand firmly, “Friends, but you know how the saying goes, ‘and they were roommates!’”
This caused both of them to laugh loudly at the terrible Vine reference just made. Elira had a different, more softer smile after this, and Pomu felt a little shy again seeing the dragon look at her like she was something precious.
“Goodnight Pomu,” Elira said in the most gentle way the fairy has ever heard from her usual gremlin voice.
“G-good night Elira,” the fairy stuttered out in a quiet tone before gently closing the door and jumping on her bed. Without even changing out of her clothes, she slowly fell asleep thinking of the gentle, slightly raspy voice the dragon just spoke to her in.
The next morning, Pomu woke up incredibly hungover and just the thought of drinking alcohol ever again made her want to throw up all the contents sitting in her stomach. She slowly and carefully made her way to the bathroom to wash off the grime from her face and body and put on a comfy pair of pajama shorts and an oversized sweatshirt. Walking out of the bathroom, she noticed a sweet smell wafting through the apartment. Pomu slowly made her to their shared kitchen and the sight she saw had her breath caught in her throat. Elira was standing by the stove wearing a large hoodie and sweats, with messy hair tied into a bun and glasses sliding down her nose. She was flipping pancakes onto a plate and had some eggs frying in a separate pan. The dragon didn’t seem to notice any light footsteps of the fairy creeping behind her until Pomu tapped her shoulder.
Elira jumped out of her skin and let out a high pitched scream, “P-POMU? Jesus, you scared the sheesh out of me!”
“W-what are you doing?” Pomu asked in a slightly shaky voice.
“Oh, well since I knew you would have a massive hangover I felt like I should make you some pancakes. I knew you probably wouldn’t eat unless forced to, and girl you are already light as a feather! And so pancakes for two!” Elira explained and gave her a toothy, fanged grin.
Pomu immediately felt like melting into a puddle at how thoughtful and caring her roommate (friend?) was right now. The fact of the matter was that she had never seen the dragon being this considerate before, and it was sending the fairy’s heart into overdrive. She pulled at the sleeves of her sweatshirt, suddenly feeling slightly suffocated by it, and looked at Elira with confused eyes.
“B-but why? You didn’t have to, you know? I would have just died in bed for the day,” Pomu questioned.
Elira then tilted her head slightly and curled her mouth in that same grin again before answering, “But then I wouldn’t be the best roomie and friend ever if I just left you like that. Besides, I was in the mood for pancakes too.” Pomu just stared at Elira after her justification and felt herself getting red with embarrassment.
Get a hold of yourself Rainpuff! she thought loudly to herself as she sat down at their small dining table. Elira slid a plate of freshly made pancakes and eggs to Pomu and sat across from her with a similar looking plate.
“Oh and good morning Pomu! Ahah feels weird to say that since I don’t think we’ve ever woken up together before,” Elira said lightheartedly.
“I think you’re right for once,” Pomu chuckled, “but good morning to you too Elira…” She thought to herself how she wants to hear that every morning now.
The next couple of months went smoothly for both of them, if anything the air around their apartment felt lighter and comfier. Finana especially noticed it when she came to visit them during the weekend.
“So you guys are okay now?” the mermaid asked Pomu as they sat on the couch in the living room while Elira was making a boba run for them. Finana knew what happened with the juice incident after hearing it from both sides of the story.
“Oh that? Yeah, definitely settled after Eli made me pancakes and eggs the next morning,” Pomu had almost forgotten about the juice part but not the morning after.
Finana looked at Pomu with a playful grin, “Eli? Since when did you start calling Elira that? And breakfast after a drunken night huh?” the mermaid asked while wiggling her eyebrows suggestively just to annoy the fairy.
“Oh shut up Finana! You know that isn’t what I meant! And I actually don’t know? I think I just shortened her name since it was easier to call her by that,” Pomu pondered.
“Ohohoho I see. Already on a nickname basis?,” Finana teased lightly.
Pomu picked up a couch pillow and threw it straight at the mermaid’s face, earning a loud whine from the other. “I told you, we are just getting along now and she’s an actual good roommate,” Pomu said truthfully.
Finana giggled and threw the pillow back at Pomu with less ferocity than the fairy had done, “I know, I know. I’m just kidding! I’m honestly glad you guys get along and we can all hang out together now!” Pomu smiled at this fact but then a thought had come to her mind. Just as she was about to ask Finana a question, she heard the front door unlock and open with their dragon friend standing in the door.
Elira held up the cupholder of boba and exclaimed rather than asked, “Anyone order boba delivery from Elira PenDOORDASH?” A wave of silence passed before a burst of laughter erupted from Pomu with Finana groaning at the horrible pun.
After they all settled down on the couch and picked a movie to watch, Pomu couldn’t help but peer over at Elira and Finana every now and then and thought to herself that this was nice. But she couldn’t help but be miffed by the dragon’s timing when she was going to ask the mermaid an important question about the former. Perhaps another time.
It’s been little over half a year since the pair have been living together. It was currently 9 p.m. and they just finished rearranging their living room, because Pomu wanted a fresh new space after seeing the same set up for the entirety of her living there. Elira complained but still went along with moving everything and helping the fairy, and she had to admit it does feel nice to see a new view.
“See I told you it would be worth it!” exclaimed an excited Pomu.
“I guess but now I’m all sweaty. Let’s get takeout since it’s already dinner time,” Elira grunted as she stretched out her body and wings. Pomu couldn’t help but wonder how exactly the dragon flew with those wings but maybe some things were left best unanswered. She also tried not to stare too long at the dragon flexing her muscles and the light sheen of sweat on her forehead and hurriedly looked away to order food for delivery.
Pomu sat on the couch and scrolled through the app landing on a restaurant they frequent. Elira flopped next to the fairy and nonchalantly put an arm around her shoulders to lean over to look at the screen. This didn't bother Pomu, in fact it felt comforting, and leaned closer to Elira so the dragon could get a better view of the menu. “Should we try something new or just order the usual Eli?” asked Pomu.
“Mmm some kung pao chicken do be sounding kind of bussin’ right now,” Elira stated as her fingers absentmindedly twirled strands of Pomu’s hair. She didn’t seem to notice and instead was focused on ordering.
“Please don’t ever say that again to my face. But alright let’s get some kung pao chicken, low mein, and eggrolls!” Pomu finished ordering on the app and when she put down her phone, finally realized how close the dragon and herself were. Elira still had an arm around her shoulders and was still playing with her blonde hair. As Pomu and Elira turned to look at each other, they both realized they were inches away from each other’s face. Abruptly, both of them separated from each other with a blush forming on Pomu and Elira abashedly scratching the back of her neck.
“So uh…wanna play Portal 2 while we wait?” Elira awkwardly brought up.
Pomu cleared her throat and nodded.
All the tension in the air subsided once they actually started playing and their food arrived. Pomu let her mind wander on what would have happened if they stayed like that while stuffing her face with noodles and chicken.
Time flew by and it was nearing the one year mark of Pomu moving in with Elira. By this time, Elira had learned her lesson and now cleaned up after herself almost all the time. Which was honestly a huge improvement from when the fairy first met the dragon. Pomu could clearly remember the days when she would rant on her private Twitter account about all the disgusting things Elira used to do on a daily basis, but these days it seemed like she was gushing about said dragon. Pomu doesn’t want to admit it, but she may be developing feelings for her dorky, nerdy, pretty dragon roommate. She noticed her alleged feelings on the day of her birthday. Quite arguably the greatest day of her life and all because of her stupid, thoughtful blue and white haired friend.
The day started normally with Pomu rushing late to work and completely forgetting it was her own birthday, until she got to her office and her coworkers had decorated it with balloons and party streamers. They even got her a cake! She then proceeded to eat half of it during her shift and took the rest back home. Home, a word she would never have associated with the dragon in that first month of living with her, but now it embodied everything she loved about their little two bedroom apartment.
When she arrived though it was strangely empty. No sounds from the television or Elira’s room, no lights were turned on, and most obviously no Elira. Pomu had gotten so used to hearing the dragon say “welcome home” that the dark and empty apartment was chilling to her. She checked her phone, but no texts or phone calls from Elira, had she gone out without telling her? Pomu couldn’t blame Elira for not knowing it was her birthday today, she never told her and even forgot herself, but that didn’t dismount the disappointment of the dragon not being home.
She then heard hurried steps coming towards her direction and then a gasp. Pomu turned to none other than the person she was hoping to see the most. Elira stood there mouth agape, holding a dozen flowers and plants, balloons, and a small cake.
“Well sheeesh, I didn’t think you would come home so quickly. Didn’t even give me time to set up!” the dragon barked out.
Pomu stared wide eyed at Elira and simply asked, “How did you know it was my birthday today?”
“Well Finana told me to do something for you since she knew you would probably forget, so I was gonna surprise you…but looks like you beat me to it,” Elira answered back, “Sorry this is so scuffed, I hope this still counts as a surprise.” She smiled at the fairy with that same toothy grin Pomu liked to see so much.
Pomu couldn’t stop the wide smile that was stretching her face and the small tears forming in her eyes. She smoothly walked over to Elira and gingerly laid her forehead on the dragon’s shoulder to hide her growing blush.
“Thank you so much Eli. It’s perfect,” she spoke in a hushed tone that only one other person could hear.
Elira smiled gently and laid her head on top of Pomu’s head whispering to her, “Happy birthday Pomu.” It was truly perfect in every possible way because it was simply Elira being herself, and that’s when Pomu knew.
It had officially been a year of living together, and if one thing had changed, it was the way Pomu hyper fixated on everything the dragon did. From the way Elira would make her tea every morning, to the cleaner apartment these days, and especially in the way her friend (crush?) would look at her. Pomu couldn’t help but feel slightly cautious under the dragon’s gaze, with a bright turquoise eye following her sapphire ones, it felt like a predator watching its prey.
Elira decided they should celebrate their roomie-versary with some “light” drinks, but four to five bottles of flavored soju later, and they might have been a bit more than tipsy. They were sprawled out on opposite sides of the couch, and Elira was currently rambling about Niagara Falls. Pomu watched her cutely ramble on but was in and out of the conversation. She could feel the flush on her cheeks all the way to her ears, and it didn’t help that she was currently wearing Elira’s sweatshirt because her laundry was still in the wash. Everytime Pomu brought up the cup filled with a questionable alcoholic concoction to her lips, she could smell the faint scent of Elira’s fresh pine detergent from the sleeve, making her head spin even more.
“Hey Eli, can I ask you something?” Pomu asked, feeling brave from the alcohol plaguing her senses.
Elira stopped her rant, still about the famous waterfall, and fully turned her body to give Pomu all her attention. “Yeah, what’s updog?” Elira smiled into the last word she said.
“Nothin’ much, how about you?” Pomu giggled along with Elira but then cleared her throat, “Seriously though, why did you agree to becoming roommates with a total stranger? Even if we are both friends with Finana, I could have secretly been a murderer or something!”
“Oh well, if you were a murderer…keeping me around for a pretty long time huh? OH EM GEE to gain my trust!” Elira fake gasped which made the fairy roll her eyes to which the dragon continued, “But it sounded like you needed help so I didn’t mind. Plus, Finana showed me your picture and you were REALLY cute, like your thighs? I was like ‘DAMNNNN SHEEEEESHHH’ but then I remembered I shouldn’t say that out loud.”
Pomu buried her head in the couch out of embarrassment hearing the dragon compliment her like this, especially over her thighs of all things. Of course she was proud of them but hearing that Elira was ogling over them made her body feel on fire. She was currently wearing some short pajama shorts, and when she peeked at Elira she could see the dragon stealing glances downwards in the direction of her legs. Feeling brave she lifted her head towards Elira and took a deep breath in.
“I-I think you’re cute too…” Pomu shyly admitted and went back into her hiding spot.
A second passed when she felt the couch dip near her, and when she looked up again, the dilated pupils of a dragon stared right back at her. Elira leaned over Pomu and gave a chaste kiss on her cheek. The fairy could barely register what had happened as it felt like it happened way too quickly for her liking. Out of adrenaline or drunken stupor, she grabbed the collar of Elira’s t-shirt and crashed her lips on the dragon’s, feeling her fangs glide across. Elira leaned more into the kiss, causing the fairy to rest against the armrest of the couch as both of them began to leave breathless kisses.
Pomu felt her body tingling after soft kisses replaced rough ones over and over. Elira brushed her bangs out of her face revealing her white and magenta eye and stared at Pomu with a look that the fairy could only describe as predacious. It sent her into a flurry of emotions but still wanting to maintain eye contact, she wrapped her arms around Elira’s neck to hold her in place, so she could look deeper into those eyes.
Elira bit her lip and wrapped her arms around Pomu’s waist. “God…you’re so pretty Pomu. I might still be drunk but I liked you the moment I met you. The way you carry yourself, how hard-working you are, and how you always laugh at my puns. I like everything about you Pomu,” Elira suddenly confessed.
Pomu, not expecting a confession like that, felt like she was suddenly filled with a thousand butterflies fluttering in her stomach. Mimicking Elira’s bravery, Pomu cupped Elira’s face to make sure she registered everything she was about to say.
“Elira Pendora, I like you a lot too. I never thought a careless, messy dragon of all people would come to steal my heart, but you literally swept me off my feet Eli. Ever since you bought me the tea, to carrying me back to my room, to giving me the best birthday ever…I think I’ve come to like you so much more than I thought I would,” Pomu declared with her heart on her sleeve.
Elira, stunned speechless for once, simply leaned down to give Pomu a kiss that felt more magical and filled with emotion compared to any fairytale kiss.
They stayed on the couch all night cuddling with each other until they both fell asleep. Pomu laid on top of Elira as the dragon cradled the small fairy in the safety of her arms and wings.
Morning rolled by and Pomu stirred awake on the couch. She had a blanket on her and suddenly all the memories of last night replayed in her head like a movie. She groaned and covered her face with the blanket when she remembered all the embarrassing and much too truthful words she said yesterday. Then the image of Elira leaning towards her for a kiss, and their small make-out session whacked her upside the head and steam was radiating off her.
“No way that was all a dream...right?” Pomu thought to herself as she finally sat up on the couch. The sight that caught her eye was all too familiar. Elira donned her glasses again but was making waffles instead of pancakes for breakfast. Pomu could smell bacon coming from the kitchen too and walked slowly towards Elira hoping she wouldn’t turn around like last time. But as if the dragon could read minds, she turned to Pomu right as she took a step into the kitchen area.
“Hey there sleepyhead, do you like waffles?” Elira grinned at her expectantly.
Pomu had a sigh of relief that there wasn’t any awkwardness laced in that sentence and promptly responded back, “Yes we like waffles!”
Elira did a high pitched cackle and finished up making the rest of the batter into crispy golden waffles. “Alright you head first to the table and I’ll meet you there,” Elira told her.
Pomu nodded but also had a gnawing thought that they should talk about last night. But as she walked right up to the table, all thoughts and noises had sizzled out of her brain. On the table in the most ridiculous fashion, laid out bacon strips in the question ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’ Pomu stared in shock and disbelief at what she was seeing and pinched herself to see if she was dreaming. Nope definitely felt that and this is all actually happening. Soft footsteps could be heard behind her, and she turned around to see the mastermind behind this plan.
“I hope you’re in the mood to PIG out,” Elira nervously scratched behind her neck and couldn’t look Pomu in the eyes.
She looked so small for once that it made Pomu’s heart swell up, and the fairy lightly stepped closer to Elira.
“Really? A pun at this moment of you asking me out?” Pomu giggled.
“Well you know me, pun master here…” Elira shifted under the fairy’s loving gaze, “s-so what’s your answer?”
Pomu smiled so widely and her cheeks as red as a tomato peered up at Elira. They say a kiss is worth more than a thousand words and the one that they shared that morning definitely was exactly that. Pomu’s kiss with Elira tasted like tea, spice and everything nice.
