Work Text:

“Valentine’s Day? What is that? Some sort of ritual for humans?”

MK almost spat out his boba tea upon hearing such a statement come out or Red Sons mouth. Surprised wasn’t even the feeling to begin with, as there were many more emotions that were swarming through his brain while he was standing in front of Pigsy's Noodle Shop. MK looked over at his boyfriend, who was currently quirking an eyebrow at the sudden outburst, with a hand on his hip. MK could sense the confusion, with a hint of irritation, coming from Red Son as MK quickly cleaned his mouth.

It had been almost a year since the defeat of Lady Bone Demon, one that was hard fought with a satisfying outcome. Macaque and Wukong made amends, MK got back the staff, and Red Son finally stood up against his parents to join MK and fight the Lady Bone Demon. While on that trip MK got close to Red Son, who seemed hesitant at first, but slowly opened those dark doors to MK. Soon enough, after a dramatic conclusion, Red and MK shared their first kiss in the rubble of the Lady Bone Demons Mech.

So yea, a lot has happened in the past few months. It was a rollercoaster, but what was the most amazing thing he got out of that ride was Red Son. MK and Red Son started dating shortly after, and then MK asked if they wanted to become a couple. Of course Red Son didn’t really know what a ‘romantic relationship’ was, but he was willing to try it out. Ever since then, things have been wonderful.

Until now that is.

The two of them were currently in front of Pigsy's Noodle Shop, MK spending his break outside with the arcade machine they got back after the whole ‘pinball fiasco’ situation. Mei was hanging out with them today, but she went inside to take a phone call from her folks…which was how the conversation got brought up in the first place. She had to watch the house during her parents Valentine’s Day date they were going on, ranting about it before she went inside to take the call.

Which brings us to now.

“Wha-Who? What?!” MK sputtered, quickly looking at Red Son with wide eyes, “You don’t know what Valentine’s Day is?! Seriously?”

Red Son rolled his eyes, and said in a flattened tone, “That is what I just said, Noodle Boy. Were you not paying attention?” Red Son huffed, “But no, I do not know what this ‘Valentine’s Day’ is.”

While Red Son may sound aggressive to an outsider, MK knew that is just how he expressed himself. After all, the guy has been living with a raging bull father and an emotionless mother for most of his life. MK knew this, and obviously wasn’t offended by such an irritated tone. Nonetheless, the Monkie Kid was still shocked to hear such a statement.

“How can you not have heard it-” MK yelled before halting, “Wait, nevermind, answered my own question. But Valentine’s Day is a special day for all couples, and non-couples, to express their love to each other!”

MK tried to explain it the best he could, as even he barely knew what the day meant sometimes. Society has brought it to the brink of you having to buy goodies for your significant other, and not just expressive love, that MK was occasionally confused about such an event.

“But couples still love each other outside this day, do they not?” Red Son asked, tilting his head to the side.

That made MK sputter once again, “W-Well yea! But this day is extra special!” MK slithered up to Red Son and put an arm around him, extending the other out into the horizon as if you were imagining things, “You get gifts, chocolates in a box, flowers! You go on a date, or stay in, with your loved one! Then at the end of the day, you swoon and kiss and cuddle-”

He was full on gushing now, letting out a dreamy sigh. You could probably see the pink hearts swirling around his head from a mile away. He wondered what Valentine’s Day would be like with Red Son because not only was Red Son there with him, but this is his first year actually spending it with someone. They would go on a walk, MK could give Red Son some plastic flowers, and have dinner at Pigsy's Noodles! Maybe MK would put on some cheesy, classic music Tang likes, and wear a fancy suit (well more of a fancy shirt since Gods know he can’t afford a suit) and dance around before dipping Red Son down before kiss-

“So a day spent on focusing on relationships? Strange.” Red Son mumbled, snapping MK out of his daze. The demon had a hand underneath his chin, as if he was trying to deduce what this blasted holiday was all about, “So does that mean we must do something for this holiday then?”

That made MK shoot up, putting his hands on Red Son's shoulders with a giant grin, “Yes, yes, yes! Oh my gosh, you are going to have the best Valentine’s Day ever!”

“Wait, what-?”

“We can go on a fancy date, to the carnival, or even go to the movies! I’m sure a lot of places have a couples discount where you can get in for cheap, or even free! I’ll have to ask Mei about that, since she knows everything about every store in town.”

“Slow down-”

MK stopped, looking up at Red Son with one of the most serious expressions on his face. It would’ve looked intimidating, if not for the sparkles in his eyes, “Red Son, I promise to make this the best Valentine’s Day of your life. I am going to do everything I can to make it perfect.” He had pulled Red Son close, who was shocked to see him in such a crazed state.

After Red Son meekly nodded, MK went back to his cheerful self, “Cool! Now go! I need to get some ideas flowin’ in my head! You said you were meeting up with Sandy in a few too, weren’t you?” Inside of his head, he was trying to come up with a million activities to partake in, his smile growing even bigger at the thought.

“Yes, I was just going to head over there-” Red Son couldn't finish his sentence, because MK was pushing him gently in the direction of the docks where Sandy was.

MK, still gushing about the ideas in his head, chirped, “Well go now! Don’t worry your fiery, little head about anything! Your boyfriend MK has got it all under control! Now have fun building your…your…” MK trailed off, biting his lip in thought as he completely forgot what Red Son was building. He remembered Red Son telling him about it, but his mind was somewhere else now.

But he stopped when he felt lips brush against his cheek, kissing him softly. MK squeaked, hair sticking out in all directions, as he heard Red Son say, “The combat boat for Sandy?”

“Y-yes, that! Boat, big, big boat!” MK rambled, clearly not focusing on the words. Red Son rarely showed physical affection out in public, as it was MK’s second job, so you could probably tell why MK was acting so shocked.

As if Red Son realized what he just did, his own face turned an adorable pink before he quickly pulled away, “W-well, I am going now! Later, Noodle Boy.” And with that, MK rubbed his cheek where he was kissed tenderly while Red Son disappeared in a ball of flames.

When Red Son always kissed him, he felt it sting straight into his core. It was an intoxicating feeling, one that MK could get drunk off of if he was 21 (as he was 20 right now). Even though he knew Red Son was a fire demon, one who could literally burn him alive if he wished, MK knew the sting was more than just the heat radiating from Red Son. It was the feeling of having someone so perfect and amazing there with him. Red Son was so perfect and he had to make this date perfect.

Perfect is what you would say to a fancy dinner by the water, or roses in a bed, not what MK was thinking. And when MK finally realized this, his face immediately fell and he kneeled on the ground dramatically in a show of sadness. All of his ideas were lame ! He was thinking of a movie night, or perhaps going to eat at Pigsy’s!

“Nooooo!” MK wailed, not noticing the stares he got from ongowers, “What am I going to do?” He banged the asphalt in an attempt to contain his anger from releasing, and also to be dramatic, when he heard someone from behind him.

“Do about what?”

His salvation arrived.

MK whipped his head around to see Mei standing in the doorway of Pigsy’s, holding her phone in one hand while the other was in her pocket. She sighed, “Sorry for the wait, my parents told me everything for the gazillionth time! But anyways, what’s up with you? And where’s Red Son?”

Upon hearing his boyfriend's name, MK felt his eyes water before he was sobbing once more. He was sobbing loudly, grabbing Mei’s white pants with shaky hands, “I don’t know what to do! I said it was going to be perfect and-and-” MK had tears streaming down his face, blubbering to Mei about his latest fiasco.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Mei calmly said, grabbing MK by his shoulders before making him stand up straight, “What is going on? You look like you saw the series finale of ‘Monkey King: The Series.’ Did something happen between you and Red Son?”

“No,” MK sniffed, “You know how you were talking to your parents about Valentine’s Day? Well Red Son doesn’t know what that day is, and I kinda promised to make it the best Valentine’s Day for him. But the problem is,” MK started to sob loudly again, “I don’t know what to do! He’s just so perfect, and all my ideas are lame!”

“I’m sure they aren’t that bad of ideas!” Mei objected, giving a shrug of her shoulders.

“I thought about having dinner at Pigsy’s.”

“Okay that is a bad idea.”

“I know! So what am I going to do? I’ve never planned something like this before! Red Son is usually the one that plans the dates and I am the one that goes along with them! Not only that, but it’s Valentine’s Day today and I have no idea what I am going to do!”

“Well I can help if you want.”

“Really? You would do that?”

“Of course, you’re my best friend! Now I may not be in a romantic relationship myself, but your bestie Mei knows exactly what to do!” Mei then hesitated, “Mostly.” Before MK could react, she blurted, “But I have read plenty of comics, and fanfiction, to know exactly what the perfect date is supposed to be like.”

MK wiped the tears off of his cheeks, hiccuping. After a little session of crying, he decided to pull himself together and he had a determined look upon his face, “Okay, so what do we need to do first?”

-~-~-~-~-

MK wasn’t sure about this.

He shifted around, trying to pull down the collar of the suit as it was constricting his air flow, “Mei, are you sure this is a good idea? I don’t think I can breathe in this thing.” As if it was on time, the tailor tightened the tie on the black suit, making MK gag once more.

“Oh come on, Red Son will love it! People in stories always love it when the main character wears something classy for them. It shows that they are sophisticated and we all know how fancy Red Son is.” Mei nonchalantly replied, watching from her seat.

While MK was hesitant about the idea, he decided to follow Mei’s advice anyway. They decided to go to the nearest suit shop to get MK something he has never worn in his life, a suit. Besides, it wasn’t like MK knew what he should be doing for this date anyways, which is why Mei was helping him along with this. So, he decided to go with the flow, even if his airflow was being constricted.

MK stood in front of a wall of mirrors on a pedestal, a tailor taking in measurements and adjusting the suit as it seemed fit. MK was currently trying not to jump off of the pedestal and run straight to the ills, because this was for his boyfriend. Red Son was much more classy than MK anyway, so why not jump straight into his world for a few hours?

“I guess you’re rig- too tight .” MK wheezed, his yellow face turning a dark red because he was struggling to breathe as the tailor pulled the tie too tight. The tailor quickly saw this and undid the tie to a considerable degree, relieving MK from the death he almost had. The tailor then backed off, letting MK look at himself in the mirror.

It was a regular tuxedo, one that made him look completely different from the MK he knew. It was strange wearing an outfit that he would most likely wear to Tang's funeral after Pigsy killed him for free-loading for the last time. It wasn’t something he would wear on the get-go, which made MK wonder how businessmen could wear something this crazy for the span of 12 hours a day.

“MK, you look uh-mazing!” Mei squealed, making MK flush in embarrassment, “Red Son is going to love this! Now we need to fix your hair and you’ll look the part.” Mei stood up from her relaxed position, smiling at her bestie.

Instead of being excited, MK looked confused and brushed some of his hair out of his face with a small squeak, “What’s wrong with my hair?”

“Nothing! You gotta look the part though and I don’t think you wearing your headband is going to make you look classy.”

“Aww man! Can’t I keep the headband?”

“No way!” Mei huffed, blowing out her cheeks. She then rushed up to MK and instantly scrolled through her phone at an insane pace, “The person has to have neat hair to complete the transformation! Besides teaching you how to speak fancy of course.”

“Wait what-”

Any who-you gotta look good tonight!”

MK fumbled with his hands, turning his eyes downward with a frown. While he knew this was a great idea, he felt like he was completely changing himself for Red Son. Red Son never changed his appearance when they went to the movies or acted differently than how he usually was. But he wanted to make this date perfect for Red Son, because he…he didn’t want to be a bad boyfriend. Of course he had insecurities, but the one that scared him the most was disappointing Red Son more than anything.

Mei seemed to notice his hestiance and put a hand on his shoulder, “Hey, we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”

The comfort coming from Mei seemed to help him a small bit, a smile coming to his mouth, “No, I want to do this. I’m going to make tonight the best day ever, Mei. Let’s do this.” He was filled with determination, something that the Monkie Kid was known for, so he knew nothing was going to go wrong!

-~-~-~-~-

The hours went by, and things were going by at an enhanced speed.

As MK was getting his hair done, Mei decided to get the date planned out all by herself. But first she needed a venue, and immediately asked MK where she should plan the event. Mei did suggest Sandy’s boat, as it would be a private dinner by the ocean, but MK immediately shut that down. He didn’t want to have flashbacks of Mei being there instead of Red Son, even though that was an illusion.

So Mei brought up the idea of going outside of town to a small field, one where they were so used to training at. It was the perfect place, a grassy field with the occasional flowers scattered across the place and MK knew he was in love when he immediately saw the pictures from Mei.

After fixing the hair fiasco, MK was taken to see Tang about his use of English. While Tang thought it was good, he knew MK would have to speak more ‘classy’ if he were to swoon Red Son over. Tang, using his massive intellect, helped MK learn how to swoon somebody in the span of an hour (But also smacking him upside the head if he were to get any answers wrong). As that happened, Mei convinced Pigsy to make a fancy dinner (by bribing him with overtime from MK) and everything was set.

All that was needed now was Red Son.

MK adjusted his tie, holding the bouquet of red roses shakily. His hair was flattened down and brushed off to the side without his headband (Although he did keep it in his pocket). He was standing next to the candlelit table, one that had fancy china and a main course of noodles. While MK didn’t know it, they were the exact same noodles from the shop, but he managed to make it look a little more sophisticated by the candlelight. Along with the candlelight dinner, MK bought some store-bought chocolates on his own time. While Mei wouldn’t want him to do such an act, MK wanted to at least contribute to the date in some way.

“Are you really going to leave? What if we get stranded out here? Or, or there’s a monster! What happens if I screw up?” MK rambled, clearly sweating through the suit.

“Come on, you got this! All you gotta do is remember what Tang taught you.” Mei chirped, getting on her bike, “Sandy scouted ahead and made sure there aren’t any monsters around. Now go on and have fun and don’t forget to come home at a reasonable time.” MK flushed, making Mei giggle before saying, “Have fun!”

And with that, she was gone.

MK bounced on the balls of his feet, humming a small tune while he waited for his date to arrive. Did Mei send the invitation on time? Or was he going to stand there for the rest of the night without having someone to spend the rest of the day with? The doubt was slowly starting to sink in, and he realized he probably disappointed Red Son, as if he was there with him.

Just when MK was about to throw the flowers on the ground and scarf down the noodles that were on the table, he was greeted with the sight of orange flames. MK immediately perked up, relieved that Mei actually sent the invitation, and saw Red Son emerge.

He was wearing a top that was similar to his usual shirt, but it was closed in the front rather than split down in the middle. It was also longer, as it went down just below his thigh. The holes where his hands went through were much larger, making it almost seem like a kimono. It was red, but it had golden swirls and patterns all across the sleeves and down the middle. He wore simple, black pants as well, but what caught MK’s attention was his head. He wore his signature ponytail, but he also had a golden headband on, similar to the one MK had transformed into during his first battle with DBK.

MK was in awe at how beautiful Red Son looked, swallowing thickly. His heartbeat was off the charts, and he was for certain that Red Son could hear it if he got close enough.

“Noodle Boy?” Red Son asked, “What is this invitation that Dragon Girl gave me?” He cocked his head to the side and walked forward, making MK wonder if being this close to Red Son was a good idea. It seemed Red Son deduced why he was here, eyes widening, “Did you…bring me out here for a date?”

He knew it was around this time that MK should probably respond, so he took in a deep breath and tried to remember the lessons Tang gave him an hour before this. MK, using his amazing skills, walked forward and held out the roses for Red Son to take. As Red Son took them he looked shocked once more, as if getting a gift was something that never happened to him before (which probably was true)

“I yearned to give these to you, because they remind me of you; passionate and fiery,” MK whispered in a deeper voice than usual, “Yet beautiful like the morning sun.” While MK was smooth as butter, on the inside he was cringing. Is this really what people in comics do, like what Mei said? Perhaps those people were more confident in themselves, or they just didn’t have a personality at all.

Red Son held onto the roses, glancing down at them before looking back up at MK, “Are you alright? What are you wearing? You didn’t hit your head while training again, did you?” His voice sounded genuinely concerned, which made MK feel even more love for the other man.

MK knew Red Son was just asking because this was a complete 180 from how MK usually acted, so he wasn’t upset by such a statement. In fact, it only drove MK to play his role better.

“I did not, but I did fall for you.” MK hummed, grabbing Red Son by the hand and pulling him close to his chest. Red squeaked, face turning a soft pink in response, “I just wanted to make tonight special, just for the two of us. How does that sound?” Before Red could even reply, MK was quick to kick the others legs from underneath him,

“Hey!” Red yelped, but immediately stopped talking as MK got him into position. He dipped Red down, his hand around his waist, and effectively got a rose into his mouth when Red dropped the bouquet on the ground. Red’s eyes widened drastically, his face finally turning that deep red MK was hoping for.

“I told you I was going to make tonight amazing, my love.” MK said through the rose, wagging his eyebrows in an obscene manner.

Red seemed to be affected by this gesture, and the position he was in, as he stammered, “Y-you are acting strange.”

MK, ignoring the statement, maneuvered Red so he was standing up once again, “Strange? How so, my love?” He decided to go for the kill and move his head underneath Red’s neck, kissing his jaw gently. It seemed to work because Red gasped above him, making MK internally give himself a high-five at how good he was doing.

As MK continued to attack Red Son’s jaw and neck with kisses, Red sputtered, “I-I don’t know! You are just acting differently!” Red’s breath hitched once MK gave a small bite to the underside of his jaw.

“How am I acting differently, my love?”

“Well for starters your hair and the clothes.”

“I wanted to make myself look presentable.”

“And then there’s the voice, it’s as if you finally hit puberty.”

“You don’t like my voice?”

“And the candlelit dinner, and the flowers? Also in the middle of nowhere where no one can find us? I honestly thought you would’ve taken me to a movie or something, Noodle Boy. I’m sure this is Dragon Girl’s doing” Red chuckled at his own words, not noticing the effect it had on MK until it was too late.

MK had a shaky frown on his face, glancing down at the grass underneath him with clouded eyes. Did Red really think that little of him that he would make fun of how hard he was trying to make this perfect? No, Red wouldn’t do that to him, but MK’s insecurities aren't helping the situation either.

“Hah yeah, Mei’s doing..” MK trailed off with a smile before it turned into a frown once more, voice slightly strained from all the emotions that were on top of it. He decided to hold himself now, not noticing the concerned look on Red’s face.

“Wait, I didn’t mean-” Red started, about to put his hand on MK’s shoulder.

But then there was a crash.

Both of the boys immediately shot up at the sound coming from the earth underneath them, MK wondering what it was, before the ground started to shake violently. Was there an earthquake happening right as they were about to talk? It seemed every bad outcome decided to latch onto MK, making him a bad luck magnet.

“What’s happening?!” Red asked.

“I don’t know! Look!” MK yelled, looking over at the candlelit table where he saw the shaking at its most. After a few seconds of waiting the earth finally cracked open in large pieces, revealing what looked like a giant drill with a horde of Bull Clones on top of the driving compartment of the drill.

“The dinner!” MK screamed, his voice finally back to normal because of the crack in his voice. Since the drill emerged from underneath the table, everything was either smashed to pieces, or discarded on the ground, “No, no, no! This wasn’t supposed to happen. Why are they here?!”

The Bull Clones descended from the giant drill, some of them holding onto what looked like a small blue crystal. While MK was currently freaking out about the dinner being totally ruined, he barely noticed Red Son walking forward to stand in front of MK.

“Those are energy crystals. They power up my fathers armor, but only for a while. They must’ve been drilling around here until they spotted my heat signature.” Red replied with a sign, “Father will do anything to bring me back for ‘divine punishment’, so that is why they are attacking now.”

Great, just great . Not only was this date super awkward, but DBK decided to ruin the party by sending his Bull Clones out here. Well, to be honest, MK thought it was better than having a fire demon make fun of him for how hard he tried on this date. But awkwardness aside, they had to fight these clones because no way was Red going to go back to his father.

MK, taking a deep breath to calm himself, put a hand to his ear and summoned his staff with a flash of gold. He looked much more serious compared to the minor freak-out he had about the table earlier, “Okay, we can stop them. Are you ready?” Red gave a nod, summoning fire onto his hands, “Let’s do this!”

MK and Red charged at the clones, who had dropped the crystals quickly to reveal their weapons. The fight consisted of metal being melted down by fire, and enemies being batted away like a baseball by a magical staff. It seemed the battle was drawing to a close, but then the drill started firing their canons at them.

“Look out!” Red yelled, tackling MK down onto the ground, just out of reach from the cannonball that exploded next to them, “Are you alright?”

It just felt so different from how Red used to act. Red once was a true demon, one who didn’t care about mercy or any other people besides his parents. Now, after meeting MK and his friends, he has become a whole new person and was putting his powers to good use. Red now helps others in need, and MK admires how someone who was so bad could change into someone kind.

While that change was good, MK didn’t change for the better. He made himself completely different for this date because he thought it would impress Red, and make MK seem like a better boyfriend. Only now did he realize this, as he heard Red’s voice from above. Red seemed to be talking, without MK realizing, before he was being shaked rapidly.

“Yea, yea, I’m fine. We gotta take out that drill and I think I have an idea for what to do.” MK replied after he got up off the ground. He had a confident look on his face, smiling at Red, who smiled back with a nod, “Ready?”

“Always have been, Noodle Boy.” Red cockily replied, getting into position.

With a chuckle at Red’s eagerness, MK yelled, “Hey drill, stop your..drilling and look over here!” He heard Red groan at the battle-talk before MK continued, “Here comes Monkie Kid!” And with that, he slammed the staff onto the ground vertically, creating a crater underneath it.

The Bull Clones were shot back, despite laying on the ground, and the drill moved an inch from where it was originally placed. While MK held the base of the staff, Red Son grabbed the other side with a smirk. With that, MK used his powers to make the staff extend high in the air while Red Son still held onto the side of it with ease. All of the Clones looked up in shock as Red continued to fly up in the air before it stopped abruptly.

MK watched in awe as well, at the grace and elegance of Red as he jumped off of the staff and came plummeting towards the ground at the drill. He had a giant flame burning his hand, one that would be used against the giant drill. Even though MK was enthralled with the sight, he made sure to scramble over to a tree and hide behind it just as there was a loud explosion. His vision was clouded with orange and red for a second before it disappeared, making MK peek out from the, surprisingly, stable tree.

The Bull Clones seemed to have gotten destroyed along with the drill, which was in pieces all over the crater that Red formed. Speaking of Red Son, he was breathing heavily in the middle of the crater while he sat down.

“Red!” MK said, trying to slide down into the crater before he fell without a single trace of grace in him. Once he got over to Red, he sat down as well and put a hand on his shoulder, “Are you okay?”

Red turned his gaze towards MK, a small smile on his lips. It seemed his hair fell out of his ponytail during the explosion, and his clothes were in occasional tatters. With this display being shown to MK, he looked down and saw what he looked like. And lo and behold, he looked the exact same, with tears all over his suit (tie long gone), and hair flying all over the place.

“No, no, no.” MK mumbled, overwhelmed, “This wasn’t supposed to happen. This was supposed to be perfect! But look at me, messing everything up like I always do.”

He hugged his knees to his chest, trying not to cry. He was just so frustrated that he couldn’t even make a single, damn date amazing. All he managed to do was bring some Bull Clones in and completely embarrass himself in front of Red Son. Speaking of, MK barely noticed the look of pure shock on Red’s face as he was too busy trying to control his own feelings.

“Noodle Boy-”

“I asked Mei to help me plan all of this because I knew all of my ideas were lame. I did want to go to the movies with you, but I wanted to make it extra special because it's you . So I decided to change myself, with Mei and Tang’s help, ‘cause I wanted to do something you liked this time. I see how you act whenever we go on my dates to Pigsy’s or to the arcade. You always look so frustrated and embarrassed.” MK quietly said, his dark eyes barely peeking out of his legs.

“And then when you came, you even saw that someone like me couldn’t have done this all by myself. If I hadn’t made you come out here, you wouldn’t have even gotten attacked by those stupid Bull Clones! All I did was mess everything up. You are disappointed, I know, but for once I thought that even a screw up like me could be awesome…like you.” When MK finally finished, tears were falling down his cheeks.

There was silence.

MK wasn’t sure if the silence was a good thing, or a bad one, as the minutes passed by. Although he was glad that Red wasn’t saying anything at the moment, MK knew he must be thinking about how much MK messed up. How could he not?

“I don’t hate our dates, Xiaotian.”

The Monkie Kid tilted his head up, to make sure his hearing was working because he swore he heard his actual name, and asked quietly, “What?”

He saw Red Son looking ahead with a frown on his own face, which clearly was the work of MK. Red had one leg stretched out, while the other was bent up so his arm could sit upon it. Red let out a sigh, “I have never been one to show affection correctly, as I have only been with my parents my entire life. If I seem ‘angry’ or ‘embarrassed’ it is because I am still getting used to these feelings. I apologize if I made it seem like I hated our dates together. In fact..I love them.”

The demon smiled, “I love every single one of them, even if they are just going to the arcade or the movies. They are fun, as you humans would say. It let’s me see you happy, and that is one of the most important things to me.” Red glanced over at MK before turning a deep scarlet, “A-and you don’t need to change yourself! I apologize once more if I was being rude earlier,” Red turned to face MK, grabbing his hands, “but know that I love you just the way you are, even if you are annoying.”

The last part was barely registered inside of MK’s brain because he kept thinking about the other words Red had to say. Red did truly care about him, as confessions like this are hard to come by with Red, and he didn’t want to see MK change himself just so Red could be happy. Red wasn’t disappointed in him at all, and he didn’t hate their dates! Relief flooded MK, his insecurities disappearing, before he gave a giant grin on his face.

“Red!” MK squealed, hugging him so hard that they both fell down into the dirt. Red yelped, but didn’t retaliate as he just laughed instead. Then MK teased, “Thanks, Red. I’m glad you love me, even if I’m annoying. But what are we going to do now? Everything is ruined!”

“Well I am a little famished. Perhaps we can go back somewhere and eat?” Red offered, sitting up.

At the question, MK shot up and quickly rummaged through his tattered suit jacket, “Wait, I got just the thing!” After a few seconds, MK finally pulled out the dented box which had the chocolates inside, “Everything was mostly Mei’s doing, but I thought I would buy some chocolates since I know how much you love chocolate.” MK had a bashful expression on his face, scratching the back of his neck in embarrassment.

Red Son, whose cheeks were a soft pink, gave a warm smile before saying, “Thank you, Xiaotian. But there is something I want to do first.”

Red leaned forward, making MK question what he was doing, before Red tugged on something coming from his own suit pocket. Glancing down, he saw that it was his headband, which made him smile. He lowered his head, letting Red Son put it on him before they stared at each other once more.

“There, all better.” Red mumbled, a soft smile plastered on his own face.

It was then that they heard Red’s stomach growl, making MK snicker while Red let out an annoyed huff. MK decided to open the box of chocolates, taking one and putting it in his mouth while Red did the same. Even though they were crushed, and tasted slightly of cardboard, the thought behind the chocolates made everything sweeter.

“I have a feeling this Valentine holiday of yours didn’t go exactly as planned,” Red Son started, resting his head on MK’s shoulder as they looked up at the starry sky, “But this is my favorite holiday of all.”
