Work Text:
“YES!” Jungkook triumphantly throws his controller up in the air. “I win. Again!”
“You must be cheating,” Jimin grumbles, still concentrating on the game.
“Sorry, I am just the master of Mario Kart!”
“Well maybe if you let me be Princess Peach next time,” Jimin says as he finally crosses the finish time. “And stop hitting me with turtle shells.”
“Never,” Jungkook replies with a laugh. “Let’s do Rainbow Road next!”
Jimin moans, but selects it anyway, he knows he has no chance at beating Jungkook on such a difficult level, but he enjoys seeing the younger win.
The lights in the apartment flicker for a second, then the tv screen goes black.
“So that’s the only way you can stop me winning? By turning the game off?” Jungkook teases.
“It must be a power outage, it is pretty bad outside.” Jimin says, gesturing out the window to the snow falling, and being blown all around by strong winds, which can now be heard even louder due to the lack of background tv noise. “I’m sure it’ll come back on in a second.”
And sure enough, the power does come back on, first the lights are lit again, then the tv starts up. Jimin and Jungkook, or should I say Toad and Princess Peach, last on the grid as the other characters zoomed ahead during the minute of darkness.
“Ugh, great, now I can’t win.” Jungkook complains, playfully giving Jimin a shove. “We have to restart!”
Jimin rolls his eyes, but obliges the request, exiting the game and restarting the race from the beginning.
3… 2… 1…
Jungkook almost immediately takes the lead again, quickly driving onto a boost, but Jimin manages to cling on to 4th place, the younger almost in his sights.
Somehow, Jimin hits the rocket power up, and overtakes Jungkook, laughing maniacally as the younger curses him.
Going into the final lap, Jimin is still in the lead, but Jungkook in second place is close behind him. He’s not even sure himself how he managed to accomplish this, but is silently thanking every god he can think of.
The lights flicker once again, sending the apartment into darkness.
“Sorry hyung, you’re never going to win!” Jungkook laughs, their disappointed reflections mirrored on the black screen.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll probably just last a minute or two, like last time.” Jimin isn’t sure whether he is reassuring Jungkook or himself.
They awkwardly sit in silence, waiting for power to be restored again, although this time it seems to be taking longer. Jimin takes a big drink of his beer, finishing off the bottle.
The silence is broken by a text coming through on Jimin’s phone.
“It’s from Namjoon,” Jimin answers the question before Jungkook can ask it. “Power is out with him too.”
Jungkook just lets out a little “oh”, not exactly sure what to do in a situation like this.
“I think I have a flashlight somewhere?” Jimin is more speaking to himself as he gets off the sofa, going in search of where he might have put one.
“We can use the phone light?” Jungkook suggests, taking his phone out of his pocket.
“No, it’s better to save the battery, no power means we can’t charge them either.”
Jungkook knows the elder is right, so he just leans back into the sofa, wondering how long this is going to last.
“Found it!” Jimin triumphantly returns, pointing the bulb towards Jungkook, who covers his eyes from the blinding light. “I also got some candles, so we’ll have more light around the room, and can save the battery a bit too.
Jimin places the flashlight on the coffee table, aligning the light so he can see where he’s holding the lighter. He lights three candles, leaving two there on the coffee table, and putting the other one on a side table.
“We should play a game, or something?” Jungkook suggests
“Sure,” Jimin agrees with a shrug, not knowing what else they can do to pass the time.
Jungkook thinks for a moment, “how about 20 questions?”
“Alright, I’ll guess first then.” Jimin pauses so Jungkook can think of a person to describe. “Is it a man?”
“Yes.” Jungkook replies.
“Korean?”
“No.”
“American?”
“Yes.”
“A singer?”
“Yes.”
Jimin taps his chin as he thinks of possible answers.
“Justin Beiber?” He decides to make an early guess.
“Shit, how did you know?” Jungkook furrows his brow, even though it can’t be seen in the low light.
Jimin just chuckles. “Lucky guess?” Although in reality it’s because Jungkook was humming the tune to ‘Peaches’ just a few minutes earlier. “Your turn to guess now.”
“Is it a man?” Jungkook asks, deciding to just recycle Jimin’s questions from earlier.
“Yes.”
“Korean?”
“Yes.”
“A singer?”
“No.”
Jungkook pauses, taking a second to think of other professions. “An actor?”
“Yes.”
“How old is he?”
“Jungkook, it’s yes or no questions only,” Jimin tuts.
Jungkook rolls his eyes, “is he older than us?”
“Yes.”
Jungkook pauses once again to think. He’s not as good at coming up with questions as he thought he would be, having not played this game for a while.
“Is he handsome?”
“What kind of question is that?” Jimin laughs at him.
“It’s still a question!” Jungkook huffs. “You have to answer.
“Yes, he is handsome.” Jimin is now rolling his eyes at the younger.
“Was he in a show we’ve watched recently?”
“Yes.”
“Was it on netflix?”
“Yes.”
Jungkook is mentally picturing the netflix home page, thinking of what shows he’s been able to watch during his downtime.
“Was he in Squid Game?”
“Yes.” Jimin sounds a bit defeated, knowing that Jungkook has the answer how.
“Lee Jung Jae!”
“Hah, no!” Jimin smirks.
“You’re just changing your answer cause I said him! Stop cheating!” Jungkook pouts.
“I promise I wasn’t cheating, I am thinking of the other actor!”
“Fine, it’s Park Hae Soon then.”
“Yes, well done!” Jimin smiles and gives Jungkook a pat on the shoulder.
Jungkook pushes his hand back. “I don’t like this game anymore.”
Jimin lets out a quiet laugh.
“What do you want to do instead, then?” He asks after a minute.
“I don’t know.” Jungkook whines. “I’m hungry, and it’s starting to get cold.”
“We can’t cook anything without power, but there’s plenty of snacks we can fill up on?”
Jimin picks up the flashlight and goes into the kitchen, he takes through two big bags of doritos. Opening up the first bag and handing it to Jungkook, before going to his bedroom in search of something else.
“Here, I found a big cozy blanket.” Jimin carefully drapes it over Jungkook, before sitting down beside him and pulling it over himself too. “No power means no heating, but I’m sure we’ll manage to stay warm like this.” He might have winked, but Jungkook wouldn’t be able to see in just the candlelight.
Jimin reaches his hand into the doritos bag to find it already half empty. “Damn, you really are hungry, huh?”
Jungkook blushes and passes the bag to the elder. “You can finish them, I’m more eating out of boredom, I guess.”
Jimin eats a couple of handfuls, then puts the bag down.
“Are you warm enough?”
“Yeah, it’s not too bad.” Jungkook shrugs.
Jimin moves in closer, wrapping his arms around him. “Can I steal some of your heat then?” He giggles
“Of course, hyung.” Jungkook obliges. He picks up Jimin’s legs and places them over his own lap, adjusting the blanket to make sure he’s fully wrapped in the warmth. “Is that better?”
Jimin hums in agreement, nuzzling into Jungkook’s neck. “Thank you Kookie.”
Jungkook smiles at the nickname. He hates how whipped he is for this man.
“Are you tired hyung?” Jungkook asks, running his fingers through Jimin’s hair.
“Mm, a bit.” Jimin replies. “It is dark.”
“That’s okay, we can just sleep here.” Jungkook places a kiss on Jimin’s forehead.
“Thank you.” Jimin whispers with a smile on his face, as he cuddles closer to Jungkook and closes his eyes.
