Work Text:

“So, do you guys have a group name? What do I introduce you all as?” Kurt asked the girls as they waited backstage. In order to go to Nationals, Mr. Schuester had given the Glee kids the task of finding a creative way to raise the money themselves. Kurt hadn't felt like being in the spotlight, so he had joined Quinn, Brittany, and Santana. He took the role of the ‘host’ for the concert they were holding. It was at a small venue Brittany’s dad had managed to find them. Kurt’s job was to greet the guests, introduce the girls and their songs, and entertain guests during the intermission.

“Kurt, this is a last-minute concert held in a cheap venue. No one cares what you introduce us as,’ Santana said as she did her makeup.

Quinn touched Kurt’s shoulder gently. “Call us the Unholy Trinity,” she said.

Kurt nodded. “Got it. People should start arriving in a few minutes.”

“Thank you for helping us, Kurt,” Quinn said. “We wouldn’t have been able to do this without you.”

“Yeah, thanks, Kurt,” Brittany added. “But why are you helping us instead of doing your own thing?”

“I assumed you and Mercedes would have done something together,” Santana said. “Sue would’ve given you a quarter of her budget for you guys to perform for her Cheerios again.”

“After everything that went down with Karofsky and Blaine rejecting me, I just don’t have the motivation to do anything. At least this way I can be involved without being in the spotlight.” After Jerimiah had rejected Blaine following the GAP Attack, Kurt had taken it upon himself to confess his feelings and ask Blaine if he wanted to start a relationship. Blaine had kindly turned him down, promising that it was because of him, not Kurt. It was a sweet rejection, but it still hurt, nonetheless.

Quinn patted his cheek. “Blaine’s stupid. We’ll set you up with someone as a thank you.”

Kurt gave her a sad smile. “I’m going to go check the front.”

Kurt quickly discovered that he lacked people skills. He had greeted about 20 guests, and he was already exhausted. He had assumed it’d be a quick “Hi, how are you? Your seat is just over there. Enjoy the show,” but people wanted to shake his hand, ask about performances or if they could swap seats, and wonder if they could book the Unholy Trinity for other events. He was too tired to host when it was time for the concert to start.

Just when he was going to shut the door, someone called out, “Wait! Hold the door!” Kurt rolled his eyes and impatiently waited for the person to come inside.

“Hi,” they said and gave Kurt a wide grin. “Oh, Kurt, hi. It’s me, Sam. From your history class. Sorry I’m late; my dad’s car is total crap. I’m not holding up the show, am I? Some guys from the football team told me to join them here and, to be honest, this isn’t my usual scene, but since I’m still the ‘new kid,’ I thought I should come. I’m rambling. Sorry.”

Kurt offered Sam a reassuring smile. “It’s fine. There’s only one empty seat, so I guess that’s yours. I’m just about to go onto the stage.”

“Oh, you’re in the show? That’s cool.”

“I’m the host.”

“Well,” Sam bowed, “good luck, my friend.”

Kurt gave a bow in return. After making his way up to the stage, he took a deep breath and walked into the centre. “Good evening, everyone! How are we all tonight?” The audience cheered with mediocre enthusiasm. Kurt looked for Sam’s face to give him some confidence. Just as he had assumed, Sam was smiling at him with awe. “So, the performers tonight are some of my closest friends. They will be performing solos, duets, and trios. I’m excited to introduce you to the Unholy Trinity.”

Santana spotted him right away. There was always someone in an audience who looked at everything but the show, and in this case, it was a blond guy who couldn’t stop staring at Kurt. Kurt wasn’t doing anything special; he was sitting in a chair by the stage, watching Santana and Brittany sing a romantic duet.

The more Santana looked at the blond guy, the more familiar he seemed. By the end of the song, she had placed how she knew him; he had started at McKinley a few months ago. Maybe they knew each other.

She watched how he reacted to Kurt during the intermission. Kurt sang silly, short songs, and told bad jokes. It was cute; he was looking at Kurt as if he was the most talented guy in the world.

“Hey, Quinn,” Santana said to her friend. “Remember how you promised Kurt we’ll set him up with someone?”

“Yeah?”

“I think I have the perfect guy.”

“Who?”

Santana pointed to the blond guy. “He keeps staring at Kurt. I’ll talk to him and see if he wants to ask Kurt out.”

“Oh, Sam? I talk to him all the time. He’s really sweet, even if he’s a bit weird.”

“Do you think he’s into Kurt?”

“Oh, definitely. Every time we talk, he finds a way to bring Kurt up. I don’t think he’s self-aware, though.”

Santana smiles. “I’ll talk to him.”

“Shouldn’t you make sure it’s okay with Kurt first?”

Santana rolled her eyes. “Fine.” She walked up to the stage and took the microphone from Kurt. “Intermission is over. Quinn, Britt, get up here and do a duet while I go talk to Kurt,” she announced into the microphone.

“What?” Kurt asked.

“Come with me,” Santana said, dropping the mic on the floor and dragging Kurt off the stage.

Kurt grunted and pulled free from her. “What is your problem?”

“I found the perfect guy for you.”

Kurt crossed his arms. “You pulled me off the stage for that? Couldn’t it wait?”

“No, because he’s here now, and I want to make sure you’re okay with it before I set you guys up.”

“He’s here? Who is he?”

“Sam Evans.”

“Sam?” Kurt smiled. “I like Sam. He’s cute and really sweet, but I don’t think he’s into guys.”

“He’s been staring at you the entire time we’ve been performing. Quinn says he talks about you all the time. Would you want to go out with him if he’s interested?”

“Yeah, yeah. That sounds fine.”

Santana grabbed Sam as he was heading towards the exit.

“Whoa, easy there,” Sam said and chuckled. “I know you. You’re on the cheerleading squad.”

“Yeah, I am.” Santana gave him a warm smile. “I saw the way you were watching Kurt. You barely even looked at us.”

A light blush covered Sam’s cheeks. “I mean, his outfit is just really- he looks-” Sam sighed. “I don’t know. I’ve been interested in him for a while. Not interested. It’s not creepy, I swear. We’re friends. We have a few classes together that we talk in. I like how he always says what’s on his mind and isn’t scared to talk back. It’d be nice to know more about him.”

“You talk a lot,” Santana replied and crossed her arms. “You’re in luck. Kurt is one of my best friends, I guess. And I want to set you guys up. Well, if you’re comfortable and want to. He won’t pressure you to come out.”

“I don’t know if I like guys. But I like Kurt. Do you think he’d want to go on a date with me or something?”

“I think you’re exactly what he needs right now. He’s backstage, alone.”

“Thank you,” Sam said and smiled to himself. “Wish me luck.” He walked backstage, anxiously rubbing his hands together.

“Quinn?” Kurt said when he heard the door open.

“It’s Sam.”

Kurt smiled at Sam. “You shouldn’t be back here.”

“I won’t tell as long as you won’t.”

“Is there a reason you’re back here?” Kurt sat down in the chair near the mirror.

“I wanted to talk to you.”

“About anything in particular?” he asked expectantly. Kurt wondered if Sam was going to ask him out, given what he and Santana had discussed earlier.

“Yeah, actually. We’ve been talking for a while, and you seem really cool. I don’t want to let this opportunity slip by.”

“What opportunity?” Kurt asked, unable to keep a smile from his face.

“I don’t really know how I feel, but I’m interested in you. I want to know you better, if that’s alright.”

“Know me better, as in…”

“We could start with a first date. Next week. I don’t have a car but we could walk to the Lima Bean after school.” Sam’s face flushed and he looked at the floor.

“That sounds perfect.”
