Work Text:
Having to move was never part of Jaehyun’s plan, but here he is, moving out of his parents' house because his college is a solid 6-hour drive away, so unless he wants to be driving for 12 hours every day, he kinda has to move out, luckily he found a fairly cheap place to rent out during the year and the owner has been pretty laid back if he wanted a roommate he just had to let him know and get the roommate a key. Otherwise, as long as he paid his insanely cheap rent, he was set. So in his neon green Jeep Wrangler, he packed his 19 years' worth of memories, and off he went, not without a small party his mom insisted on throwing for him and a one last major night getting cross-fazed on Johnny’s weed and Taeyong’s homemade alcohol. The drive was easy enough, make two stops, one for a bathroom break, snacks, and gas, right before he fully left and then another, about 4 hours in to get lunch. Getting Wendy’s because it’s all the city he was in, seemed to have. After he was finished eating he finished his drive to Neo Career & Tech University. Getting there to grab his schedule and to adjust things that may need to be adjusted, before making the way to his new home for the next 10 months.
When pulling up to the small house that he was renting, Jaehyun noticed that although small, it was very nice looking, rechecking the address at least 4 times to make sure it was the right place because it did seem like it was the wrong place for how much he is paying to live here. Once he’s sure the address isn't changing, he gets out of his car and finds the key the owner left for him, and starts the unpacking process.
Several hours later, after changing the sheets and comforters to his own and putting away his clothes and anything that goes on his desk, he calls it a day and decides to order some pizza. Calling it in, waiting, and then receiving the pizza, he sits down in his makeshift living room and throws on some movie that's playing. He eats half the pizza, turns off the TV and puts it in the oven, and heads to bed.
He wakes up at the sound of someone calling him, Johnny, no figure, and he answers, still half asleep and doesn't register what Johnny was telling him until two hours later when he decides to get a piece of his pizza for lunch. When two of the pieces are missing and there are two bitten into crusts leftover in their place he calls Johnny. “Dude, my pizza from last night is half one, you jinxed me with your crazy make-believe ghost story this morning.” Jaehyun says, “I didn’t jinx you!! All I said was last year a kid died there, did you sleepwalk and eat them like you sleepwalk and smoke my joints?” Johnny says, sarcastically, getting quieter in tone from beginning to end. “Fuck you John,” Jaehyun exclaims before he continues, “I didn’t, I slept like a baby all night, for your information! But seriously, what happened to the kid, was it younger or older than me…?” “I don’t know dude, it just said he was in High School at the time and living with his older brother who went to the University you’re going to now and that the one who died was named Dong Jisung,” Johnny says. Careful to not say too much in case it scares Jaehyun off.
The next time Jaehyun notices something weird he decides to look up the kids name to see if he can find anything about it. He gets an article and starts reading into the case.
Once he got sucked into the loophole of this, it was hard to stop, he wanted to know more. He thought that maybe the rumors that Jisung turned into a ghost were true and for the next day, he tried talking to the ghost, hoping that he really was a ghost and not that Jaehyun was going crazy.
Jisung was not expecting the human to notice his presence and was very surprised when the boy started trying to communicate with him. The first day he noticed the boy trying to communicate, he learned he was 19, his name was Jeong Jaehyun, his best friend was named John but everyone called him Johnny. His favorite color was white, his favorite foods were meat and peach, and he was in fact younger than Jisung would be had he not died. Jisung had a feeling if he hadn’t died he would've liked being Jaehyuns friend, the younger was fun to be around. He made Jisung feel safer than he had in years, and for that jisung tried to interact with the younger the best he could. He would make sure he always had water on his nightstand, make sure he was covered up at night if he fell asleep not covered, turn off the TV if he fell asleep with it on. If he was trying to find something and Jisung knew where it was he would take it to him or put it where he could see it.
A Few Weeks Later
The two have oddly grown close, they figured out that if Jisung had a marker and whiteboard they could communicate well. Now Jaehyun made sure to always have food for jisung because even though he was a ghost he could in fact eat. The two shared stories over food and they quickly became attached to one another.
Jisung's life had easily become the best it has been since he died. He had grown attached to Jaehyun, he couldn't see Sicheng anymore and Jaehyun has been taking care of him like Sicheng used to. He had grown really fond of Jaehyun.
Jaehyun always wanted a little brother and getting Jisung had been the closest thing to one he's ever been. So he did his best to treat Jisung right.
The two were eating dinner and Jaehyun absent-mindedly asked how Jisung had actually died. Jisung had never gotten peace, the police had never caught the person who drugged him, so being asked this made him a little upset, but he answered honestly. He wrote on his whiteboard that "Someone who Sicheng and I thought was a friend, drugged me and never got caught." "Oh god 'Sung, I'm sorry, that's probably a rough topic I wasn't thinking, I'm sorry bud" Jaehyun had said after he read what Jisung had written. It was then that Jaehyun had realized that maybe he could do something, it wouldn't be easy but he wants to help Jisung out.
Over the next month or so Jaehyun has done everything possible to help, asking for details about the 'friend,' about Sicheng, and about how to get Sicheng on his good side. He had come in contact with Sicheng by messaging him on SNS, Sicheng was rightfully closed off at first but after inviting the other over and saying he could make it happen that he talk to Jisung again, and made it happen, the two started working to get justice for Jisung.
The two spent the next year gathering evidence and once they had enough they went to the police with it, they got Jisung justice, it took time and the trial was long and annoying but eventually they got the person responsible behind bars for a long time.
