~February 14th 2022~
It all started a year ago. That one fateful valentines day in the rain. We were both single and decided to spend it together, we had been best friends for years. Nothing could go wrong, right?
It went anything but wrong, we had a fantastic day. The day started of sunny with just a few clouds in the sky. The only thing brighter than the sun were his beautiful dark brown eyes, shining with happiness, excitement and comfort. We started that day with a picnic at a local park. I had prepared the food(a combination of his and my favorite) while he brought his favorite blanket for us to sit on. We had pleasant conversations about everything we could think of and laughed at each other’s stupid jokes. We went to the comic book and game store next. I told him that he could choose a game and that I’ll pay for it, his face lid up with joy and he immediately went looking for one. We spent almost three hours there, he showed me about 20 different games before he finally chose one.
When we left the store dark clouds started to appear and it looked like it was going to rain, but we didn’t care. We still had one place to visit, our childhood hangout spot. If we didn’t have so many memories there it wouldn’t be an exciting place at al. It’s just a big tree in a clearing with a small lake next to it, the water never was (and still isn’t) clean enough to swim in. We spent the rest of the day how we did when we were kids, running and joking around. We didn’t even care when it started to rain, it just added to our childish fun. After we got tired and were completely soaked we went to sit by the tree, I was leaning onto him, listening to his heartbeat. We sat there in silence for what felt like a life time, it wasn’t a bad silence, no not at all. It was comfortable. It was the kind of silence that spoke a thousand words. At that moment I felt the happiest I had ever been.
With the sound of rain falling through the branches of the tree and his heartbeat I realized something that day......
I am in love with my best friend.
And today I am finally going to tell him.
Mingi closed his diary and looked at the time “Oh shit, I’m running late.” He had decided that exactly a year after he realized that he loved Yunho, he was going to tell him. So he asked Yunho to meet up at their favorite coffee place at 3pm. That wouldn’t be a big problem if it wasn’t already 2.40pm and he still has to get ready plus the 15 minute walk. He tried to get ready as quickly as possible but still ended up being 10 minutes late.
Mingi speed walks up to Yunho and says almost out of breath “Yunho. I’m so sorry that I’m late. I kinda lost track of time.” Yunho let out a small chuckle “It’s ok Min, I know you longer than today, I expected you to be late. Now let’s get our coffee.” They both laughed and walk into the store, it wasn’t that big but it was nicely decorated and owned by their friend Hongjoong. “Hey guys” Hongjoong says with a smile. “What can I get for you today?” Mingi looks at the menu and says “um... a white wocha cold brew please.” Yunho just says “I’ll have an iced cappuccino.” Yunho pays for the both of them and they wait till Hongjoong calls out that their drinks are done. They sit outside enjoying their coffee and talking when Mingi suddenly says “After we finish our coffee we should go to the tree by the lake, the last time we went there was last year’s valentine’s day.” Yunho gave a nod in response and they continued to drink their coffee, laughing and talking about their childhood together.
It is already starting to get dark once they reach the tree. Dusk painting the field a glowing orange color. Mingi was comfortably sitting in Yunho his lap, his head leaned back to rest on his shoulder, his hands loosely around Mingi his waist. They sat in silence watching the sun go down. After a while Mingi tilts his head from Yunho his shoulder and looks right in into those beautiful dark brown eyes, shining with a slight hit of orange. He takes a deep breath and says almost in a whisper “Yunho…..” he hesitates a bit “I wanted to tell you something” he looks away but Yunho turns his head back, with a kind look in his eyes he says. “I know Min, I’m not blind. I saw the way you looked at me the whole day...” He pauses and pulls Mingi into a tight hug “...and last year.” Mingi hugs him back. He really didn’t know if he had only loved Yunho since last year valentines day or longer, but he didn’t care. Right now nothing else mattered, just him and Yunho. His best friend. His first love. The boy that was holding him in a tight hug under the sunset at their favorite place in the world. Mingi pulled out of the hug to look in Yunho’s eyes, they were filled with love. A look he didn’t expect to get, but a look that he hopes he can keep forever. Struggling to find the right words he eventually says “Why didn’t you say anything if you knew?” he paused to try and see if Yunho his expression chanced, it didn’t. “And if you felt the same?” his voice soft but deep and a bit hurt. Yunho reaches out to his face and holds it so they have to make eye contact. “Because...” He smiled at Mingi “...I wanted you to realize that I love you to.” That made him melt right back into Yunho’s warm embrace. He wishes they could stay like that forever but it was getting later, the sun was already under and the temperature was dropping rapidly. So he made himself pull away from the hug “we should go before we freeze to death.” But before he could even stand up he felt Yunho his soft lips to his. It was a kiss full of love, a soft and kind one. One that had been waiting to happen for years but they never realized. When Yunho pulled away after a few seconds he was smiling and looked at Mingi who was a blushing mess. “Okey, now we can go.” He grabbed Mingi his hand and almost dragged him back home.
They both stayed at Mingi his house because it was closer and they just wanted to be together. Yunho made them some hot choco, while Mingi wrote in his diary. Under his previous entrée of today he wrote.
He kissed me by the tree today.
I wasn’t able to directly tell him I love him, but he got the massage and told me he loves me just as much and just long as I have loved him. This made me realize how stupidly ignorant I can be some times. But at least I’m his idiot now. This valentines day might be even better than last year. But both having memories I never want to forget.
When Mingi closed his diary he saw Yunho walking into the room with the hot choco. He walked up to Mingi and gave him a small kiss on the forehead before giving him his hot choco. They spent the rest of the evening snuggling up in Mingi his bed while watching movies and giving each other small kisses on the lips or forehead. Eventually falling asleep in each other’s embrace.
